I am not much of a coyote hunter, in fact have probably shot less than 10 in my whole life. I usually just shoot them if they are a target of opportunity. I don't mind them out in our fields because they are usually lowering the rodent population but when they get near the house then they begin to lower our cat population and then my family starts to get upset. So two nights ago this guy was yipping away outside and I decided to try and get him. I am not set up for shooting at night and I have tried holding a spotlight in one hand and my rifle in the other but this time I decided to get smart and taped a flashlight to the barrel of my .223. It worked pretty well until I got outside and found out that the zoom was all the way out and I wanted it concentrated. So I untaped the thing and focused it all the way in and taped it back on. All the while this guy was still yipping out in the swale. When I finally found him, I could see his eyes shining really well but the rest of his body was difficult to see. Anyway he began trotting across the field and he stopped about a 120 yards away and POW. Then I saw him turn and that was it. I went out searching but couldn't find him and then I began kicking myself that I had missed, so I went back in empty handed and told the wife I was a failure. The next morning I saw some birds out in the field and decided to take a look and found some blood and fur from the initial shot but didn't find the yote. So this morning I saw some more birds further out and finally found him. He was a good 100 yds from where I shot him and I couldn't believe how far he went with such a good size hole in him. It may not have been a perfect shot but I would have thought that he would have gone down sooner than that. I was using a Barnes Varmint Grenade 50gr hp in my .223. The two pictures are the entrance and exit sides.

Nice shot, they are tough and smart....especially the ones up there i think they get educated often.

Holy Cow, Greenhorn. 50g at 120 yards makes that large of an entry/exit hole? You are right--that is one tough critter.

The birds will pick at the entrance or exit hole, making the hole bigger. But yes, they are tough little buggers!
