I'm wondering where I can get a good Lab these days. My first lab past away 5 years ago, and I'm looking to find a new 4-legged grouse hunting partner. What does one look for in a pup that are signals of good gene's/temperament? Must love kids and fenced yard! Male or female? I have a female yorkie and a male cat along with a 9, 4 and 1.5 year old. Any recommendations would be great!

Look at long hollow retrievers in ellensberg. I don't know when Ryan will have another breeding but j got my pup from tlhim a few months ago. He's a great pup learns fast good with my 8 month old daughter and is crazy about birds and retrieving. Also look at Lee salmon at wind river. She should also have some good breedings coming up soon. I wouldn't hesitate to get a pup from either one of them.
-
Thanks. I looked them up. Should be having pups soon.

Bayview Labrador in anacortes. The best ever. Have two. The r the English line. Worth the look anddrive. WWould love to hear the outcome. Good luck.

Are you set on a lab?
Might be better options for only or mainly grouse.
-
Check out Warren's operation at Ireland Farms. He's a site sponsor on here. I'm very happy with my last pup that came from his lines. She's going on 3 now and is a excellent hunter while still being docile at home. There are a number of folks on here with his pups if they want to chime in.

Looks like he has a Chocolate female pup availiable at this time. Another litter due in March.

Pretty set on a Lab. I had one years ago, and as far as I'm concerned, they're the best all-around dog for both home and field.

I'm agreeing with you there!
I enjoy grouse hunting with my current lab. He finds plenty of birds- but I often don't get shots at them. My Britt (by virtue of pointing) put me in a bit of a better shooting position at times. I killed a higher % of birds I'm sure; but that isn't what it's all about anyway. Just a thought I had when you mentioned grouse hunting.
Some of the suggestions here will work out with a great lab for you and your family

DO NOT GO TO WALABS my gf wanted a silver lab and it had OCD in its shoulder 3500 dollar surgery

1 1/2 now.

Bullklr: I agree. My first priority is genetics, then family-friendly, then hunting. Grouse is just something that I'd like to do during the off season. To me, hunting ability and instincts are a bonus!
-
Misty is due tomorrow. A pointing lab is just the ticket for grouse hunting. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Warren at Ireland farms is a great option. Good guy to work with, I have a 7 month old male pup from a Ben and zoey litter and am very pleased!

Everyone has their opinion on who has the best dogs. Most are just that. If the person is selling the dog for more than free they should be doing these could test; hips and elbows, EIC, PRA and CNM. If BOTH parents haven't been tested walk away unless it's a free puppy or you are rescuing one from the pound. No exceptions or excuses.
-
Kingsland Labradors, they are in south hill puyallup. Teresa has over 30+ years of experience and has great blood lines. We had 4 litters from her stud and the dogs are very smart and loving dogs, my female was a good hunter and mom. You can look them up or PM me for a number.

a friend of mine has labs 400.00 yellow and black, great dogs ready in two weeks

While all the health clearences possible do not "Guarantee" something will not go wrong, it sure skews the odds in your favor. Like in Poker, playin the odds gives you a much better chance of winning on a regular basis. Every once in a while someone will fill in an inside straight, but most of the time it's a good way to rapidly decrease your chip stack.
I too am looking for a Lab after having recently lost one.
I am very selective as I put hundreds of hrs into training over the dogs lifetime. I see training time as an investment. If they fall apart in the first few years, even if it was free, I've lost my a** on the deal.
-
Definatley would call Warren at Ireland farms! He's a great guy to deal with and his pups are top notch.
-
Drove to Ireland farms and picked up my pup. Warren's a great guy, and she was the last female. Totally worth the 3 hour drive! The mother was mellow, and the pup seems to pick up commands naturally. I've never had a dog that had papers, but if this is a result of good bloodlines, I won't get dogs without them! We haven't figured out a name though. That is the hardest part of owning this dog so far. Lol. I can't wait for until we can walk down some skidder roads together.

What's a good name for a female? I was thinking baretta or nova, but the wife won't bite. I was thinking along the lines of a masculine/feminine name. Any suggestions?
-
She's a beauty, our girls name was KC. Congrats to the new addition!
-
I named my black lab female pup Bailey

I thought that as well, until I got my first Golden Retriever. :chuckle: :peep:

I named my Ireland pup Bella (papered name: Miss Bella Goldeneye Protege of Echo). One piece of advice is that I would only name her a name you wouldn't be embarrassed to say out loud in the field. I've heard a few doozies over the years.

Read this again then check for it on the pups you are considering.

There a lot of dogs at 6 am named SOB. :yike: :chuckle:
That is the one thing I insist on with my dog. I say here once, heal once or blow come in with my whistle.
It's not a request.

Yea, another name I hear from people towards their dog is JC as it's running away from them. You'd think they were in church or something... :chuckle:

Thats actually not a bad name. One of the best Labs I've ever hunted behind was named Rose. She was a buddies dog and passed away last year.

I am pretty sure both my dogs at one point or another thought their names were "quit it" or "no no no no". :chuckle:
-
Love our Ireland Farms pup. Here's Cooper. He is now 10 weeks old.
-
I will say it again Doug and Alice from Cooke Canyon outstanding field dogs. My last 2 Ruger and Harley are booth solid on point and outstanding in the duck boat or blind.
