So i picked up a cheap red dot from rainier arms it's a primary arms 30mm and some Tulammo for my AR and was curious what you guys thought of it is it even worth buying?I also picked up some remington umc 50 round pack and i am pretty sure it will be fine. The red dot sight will be going on my takedown 10-22 when i can afford something better for the AR i just wanted something that will get me shooting.

I think Tula has been the only stuff that wouldn't cycle my AR, steel case stuff in general isn't bad though and it did seem reasonably accurate.

i read an article, don't remember where online but they took 4 brand new dpms ar rifles and shot 10,000 rounds through each. one with wolf ammo one with federal ammo one with tula and one with brown bear I think. they came to the conclusion that the tula eats barrels more because of the steel content in the jacket of the bullet. but it was still cheaper to buy tula ammo and a couple barrels than to only shoot federal ammo. I buy and shoot cheap ammo from my ar a lot, if I was trying to have a very accurate precision rifle I wouldn't but I just have it for a fun gun. you might try and look up the article.

Thanks, guys i just did not want to get a bunch of money wrapped up into ammo that wouldn't function.I will be doing my final sight in with good quality home defense ammo.

I wont shoot wolf or tulammo out of any of my guns. mike w

Care to elaborate? :dunno: :hello:

having shot both I feel they are fairly dirty ammo and you have to clean your gun more often. please this is just my opinion. I do like the price. mike w

Thank you for the follow up.I can understand that.My main concern was functionality. If this stuff turns out to be decently accurate i won't mind a little extra cleaning time. I have more time than money at the moment. :chuckle:

I have shot several steel cased rounds in AR platforms... They work "OK" until you heat the gun up. the Laqure on the case gets sticky and causes jams and such. I read the same article on the endurance test and none of the steel cased stuff worked well.
Steel cased ammo on an AK is an entirely different animal. Ak's can chew through steel cases like a hot knife through butter and not have problems.
If you got a box of steel to "get you close" when sighting in i think that is ok just realize that you really only need it to get on the paper because the good stuff will shoot different.

I just talked to a guy who shoots a lot and he said wolf and tulammo are hard on a gun. they are cheap. mike w

Its not the steel case of the ammo that is had on anything... it is the fact that most of the steel cased ammo has jackets bullets where the jacked is made of or contains steel. The steel in the jacket of the bullet causes added wear on the bore of the barrel... but barrels for ars are cheap if you aren't looking for anything special.

Joe bobs just put the Tula on sale, 1000rds for $300 I think.

It's only $5.47 per 20 at my local wal-mart if my math is correct would be $273.50 not including tax for 1000. I do appreciate the suggestion none the less. I just checked with joe bob's and it's $309.95 so with tax wal-mart would $308.85 may just be worth the $1.10 to not have to set foot in wal-mart and have it all at once :chuckle:

I keep some as back up Ammo when I see it at Walmart but they only let me buy 3 boxes at a time :dunno:
I really like the federal ammo in the brown boxes for 9.99 and American eagle 30rds for 14.99 at sportco

For cleaning an AR do your initial cleaning in the sink, soap and as hot a water as you got and you will get 99% of the crap out of the rifle. After you do that clean your bore and wipe down the bcg with some oil etc.
As for steel cased stuff not being accurate? I shot a lot of Silver Bear through my Savage 308 (1000ish rounds) and never noticed any deterioration in accuracy. The POI was about 1 inch different than the Federal hunting loads I used but the bullets were also lighter. I've fired a ton of brown bear and silver bear through my AR and never had a jam or misfire but I also don't use an lightened springs in my trigger. Both of the "Bear" ammo's were significantly more accurate than American Eagle by Federal or Winchester ammo.
Good comparison here.
