I've seen some good elk around that area but none shot so let's see them
-
People are pretty tight lipped on the elk around this corner of the state. Anything north of Spokane and people don't talk much about it. They are there for sure, but they can be hard to locate and people don't give out any more than they have to, including pictures.
-
I posted this on the deer thread too but it applies here too.
Why does everyone get so defensive of there hunting area? :dunno:
Pumpkins are everywhere, even miles from the trail heads or locked gates. :o
I don't think there are many "secret" honey holes left on public land. ;)
GMUs are big enough and it takes more work and time then most are willing to put in to find the habitat that holds the critters and then to pattern them. :dunno:
Then it still takes a little luck getting the timing and conditions just right to bring it all together.
This last season the biggest blacktail buck I've seen killed was shot in a field that two other hunters had walked through an hour before. :IBCOOL:
We all want to think we have the hills and woods to ourselves, when the fact is a lot of us are successful because we plan on how the animals react to other hunters.
So again what is the problem with sharing what GMU we hunt? And by the way I hunt 90% of the time within an hour from Yelm. Maybe I will see you in the hills or on the lakes. Best of luck, and have a great hunt. :hello:
-
Ill get defensive, elk around here are not easy to find and there are spots where one can find elk really close to spokane and hardly if anyone chasing them. Im not telling a sole! I'll tell close friends I trust. I can kill a bull every year 30 min from spokane
-
I have seen some monsters taken. You just have to get out there scout and target them!!
-
I have a pic I have to scan... bull killed in 94'... just a little north... 63" wide... HEAVY.
-
I shot a cow up north a couple years ago. But that doesn't mean I'll tell people where to go.
-
I don't think the OP asked a thing about where anyone hunts, he wanted to see some pictures of elk taken. :dunno: I see Hornseeker mentioned that he had a picture he could scan. The north east part of the state is a pretty big area....

Even I have grown to be defensive about these type places. I work hard to figure out where the animals are. I spend a lot of time scouting, learning, patterning, etc. Why would I tell someone I don't know on an internet forum right where to go to find the animals that I worked hard to find...usually in areas where there are not pumpkins everywhere?
-
I don't recall seeing anything in his original post asking for locations. He simply asked to see pictures of an animal. Spokane is a big area. So are the GMU's surrounding it.

#1 I'm not defensive but I'm not going to share anything on an open forum. It's taken me four years to have a decent understanding of NE elk and I'm not going to say a word or show any pictures of elk that I've seen in an area that I want remain a mystery to those unwilling to put in hundreds of hours and dollars.
#2 Wrong ;)
#3 100 series, there you go
-
Any bull in eastern Washington. I cant imagine why that would get anyones attention. Big ones too, I bet they are around every corner. I think I will go hunt there soon.
-
Yeah, I've heard the elk hunting around Spokane is second to none. Drive out to the nearest public land and take your pick. Good things over there. Buddy of mine had shots at 3 elk this year with his bow, but is a terrible shot. Everyone should try hunting there, I've heard its great.
:chuckle:

don't pa attention to stang he's a trouble maker. Everyone knows all the elk are down in the blues.

Yep, wide open spaces on the east side, especially the NE corner. Elk sign is hard to NOT see :chuckle:
Extremely vocal too, they come trotting right in like a Will Primos trailer and they never leave their drainages when pressured.
-
Here's a common theme regarding hunt-wa and NE corner elk. People keep the info so close and so to themselves that there's barely ever even a picture posted here....nevermind a picture posted with information saying it's a NE elk. For that reason alone, I think you won't see too many pics on here.
:dunno:

In all seriousness, for any unit (including Spokane) contact WDFW and ask them for pointers. They are there to help. You'd be surprised at the scouting you can get from our public offices. They are out there every day and know where animals tend to be and when. I've used them on numerous occasions.
If you want to hunt half an hour from Spokane, contact WDFW and see what they give you.
For those of you who have honey holes on public land that nobody knows about, this shouldn't be a problem, because nobody knows about them, right? :chuckle: (you'd be surprised what the all-knowing gov knows).

Half hour from Spokane won't find you much to hunt. There really isn't any major tracts of public land within a half hour of town. Stretch it to an hour and you might be getting closer. But as for the WDFW the info they give is pretty limited in this part of the state. I don't think they are intentionally vague about it, it's just that they are not nearly as big or visible as the herds in other areas of the state.
-
:yeah:
You might be surprised with what they know but you'd probably be surprised at what they don't know.
If you haven't been out looking for them, you probably haven't seen many elk in the NE. Even if you have been out looking for them, you probably haven't seen many elk in the NE :chuckle:
-
That and the fact that they either are anti hunting or they want to fill their own freezers. They along with the local logging community have the best tabs on the elk in that area, and maybe an occasional whitetail enthusiast or wildlife photographer. :chuckle:

Occasional whitetail enthusiast or wildlife photographer :chuckle: wonder who they'd be :chuckle:
Bone, that could be your next conquest with your longbow - a 300+ bull from the NE. Or have you already done that too?
-
So what's the deal with not posting pictures? :dunno: Especially if they were killed on private property?
Bones probably done it but only post deer pics... :chuckle:
-
I'm not an expert but I'd submit that the kind of pictures you want to see are mostly public land kills. Unless you mean close to Spokane/Cheney, then they are private.
There was a monster bull found dead on the Turnbull a few years ago, anyone have that picture? :dunno: It was a really heavy 6x6 if I remember correctly.
-
:)
-
Also, to the OP: you aren't likely to find pictures of elk around Spokane and definitely not IN Spokane :)
-
Mt. Spokane in background....

Did you get permission to post that? I know the story behind that elk and the hunter probably wouldn't be happy about it.
Stud bull though, 2009 right?
-
Yeah... I got permission to post that "elk"...
-
 just wanted to be sure.
:chuckle:
-
He definitely didn't want people to htink he got it near home....

Awesome.. pure awesome... I've seen elk like that running around the fields just outside liberty lake.. figured it was idaho bulls running from the wolves... :chuckle:

Yes correct..see I told you.. idaho elk.

here's one.
Good luck getting much information about elk around Spokane. There are some out here, but you're going to have to do plenty of homework to find them and be successful. Good luck.

Many years ago a few lost elk found their way up from the massive herds down in the Blues. Some speculate these elk were met by a few of their brethren that were exploring from the West out of Ellensburg where kingdoms of elk litter the land. These Spokolite Elk have struggled with survival in the Spokane habitat however there are a few stragglers left, for the most part they have receded back to the motherland of elk in the Blues where seeing elk daily is as common as seeing your neighbors in Liberty Lake.

There are some big bulls taken out of there......
-
They sure are skiddish in that neck of the woods too. They cross the roads like the Devil is on their trail. Not like Packwood where they graze on the right-of-ways :chuckle:
-
I hunted Packwood a lot years ago. Skate Creek was my fav.......
-
HEY! I know that spot!
