Title: Super Beaver?
Post by: saudog on November 21, 2008, 02:13:19 PM: So I was scouting our elk grounds before the general season, and came upon this. I have never seen a tree that size being worked over by a beaver, not even close. I have seen a ton of old and still inhabited beaver ponds, but nothing like this. My dad was with me and he started talking about how they called some of the beavers the trappers found in the old days "super beavers". They were supposedly very large. I would have to think that the beaver that was working over this old growth Doug Fir must be a desindent of one of those super beavers. The wood chunks were huge. His teeth must be 3-4 inches long. Check it out!!!

They "chew" on big trees like that to keep their teeth "filed" down. My father-in-law has a willow tree that looks the same. The tree is all of 12 foot around.

Too bad WA does not have trapping any more...oh, that's right we can trap but it's got to be under the watchful eye of Big Brother in Olympia.
