Super Beaver?
«
on:
November 21, 2008, 02:13:19 PM »
So I was scouting our elk grounds before the general season, and came upon this. I have never seen a tree that size being worked over by a beaver, not even close. I have seen a ton of old and still inhabited beaver ponds, but nothing like this. My dad was with me and he started talking about how they called some of the beavers the trappers found in the old days "super beavers". They were supposedly very large. I would have to think that the beaver that was working over this old growth Doug Fir must be a desindent of one of those super beavers. The wood chunks were huge. His teeth must be 3-4 inches long. Check it out!!!

That picture is great! I like animals with tenacity...I'm sure he's a Booner Beaver. Or maybe it's just Bigfoot

I could post some pictures of the other kind of "super beaver" but I don't think they'd last very long.

I had way worse expectations. But, a beavers teeth grow throughout their life. They "chew" on big trees like that to keep their teeth "filed" down. My father-in-law has a willow tree that looks the same. The tree is all of 12 foot around.

The little bit of trapping I've done has only been beaver in Alaska. If there was ever a pelt that was meant to wear it's beaver. Too bad WA does not have trapping any more...oh, that's right we can trap but it's got to be under the watchful eye of Big Brother in Olympia.
