Title: First lab puppy home!!!
Post by: Huntlots on March 30, 2014, 08:31:45 PM
After a few years of wanting a lab I finally got one. She has only been home for a few hours and already a ton of fun! Her name is Konna. I know I have lots to learn but can't wait to start training her to be a retriever!!! Any tips or advise! Thanks.

Keep her nails trimmed and give her lots of chew toys. Have fun for a few months. Worry about nothing more than a routine to go outside and potty. Don't worry about stuff and don't try to do too much. If she brings back a sock a few times, that's all you need to do. Use a girly voice as often as possible and in public places.

She is cute.  She looks a lot like a golden retriever with that dark coloring.  8)

Keep her off the bed too.  My wife always lets our dog on the bed and I hate that.

They get to the point that they only want your spot on the bed.  Luckily it's the wife's side but that now means she wants to share my side.

Keep it FUN! Play lots, but IMO dont play tug-of-war with her, that can create some bad habits with birds. And like lunchbox said, set limits now where she can and cant be, I let mine sit in my lap on the couch as a pup, and that is exactly what he would try and do as soon as I sat down on the couch when he got older.

Nice looking dog just rember they have small bladders and can't hold it long. With that being said take her outside often so she can do her duty and get used to the fact of going outdoors.

I was showing the wife Puppy pictures and she has some addition advice.
1. Do not teach it to speak. I will get the hang of this on it's own. :chuckle:
2. Caution on chew toys. Labs will eat anything, and it's $1800 vet bill :bash: to remove the string, and chunks of rubber foot ball. Stick with Tennis balls, Kongs, ect...They do out grow the puppy Kongs, when a toy starts coming apart get rid of it.
3. When a puppy jumps on you squeeze its toes, it will get the point.
4. Put your shoes in a Closed closet.  >:(
5. If a two year old can get to it a puppy can...
6. Have fun they grow up quick, faster then kids...

No raised voice or hitting/rolled up newspaper or anything. Firm correction with a normal tone instead or else they grow to learn you only mean it when you yell.
