Title: Moving to Maine
Post by: janttihunter on April 04, 2014, 05:08:07 AM
It's getting close, my moving date is 4/27. There's allot of things I will miss about WA and some things I am looking forward to in Maine! WA I will miss the mountains, the diversity of ecosystems and game animals! I will miss elk most of all! Salmon fishing ( although Maine is working on bringing the salmon back last year was the first year you could fish for them again)
Maine I am looking forward to the freedom , 210 days of sunshine, less restrictions more huntable land, the cost of outdoor recreation, for under 100 bucks I can hunt all game species bag limits of 2 deer modern, archery, muzz plus as many does as I want for aditional 12 dollars a tag, 2 bear, 2 turkeys, small game, migratory bird, a moose lottery ticket(1:100 chance or 1:50 if I have a hunting partner, plus ice fishing, fresh, salt, and shell fishing!
I'm looking forward to the food! the Maine north woods( 10mill acres of huntable and fishable land). The simplicity of life, and being near my family and friends( I grew up on Cape cod MA.

My mom lives in Portland and my childhood hunting experiences were on Moosehead lake, hunting for squirrels and whitetails. Some great memories back there and NH.

Yes a lot of bear and you can bait! The bears are big I think the state record is close to 700lbs!! And whitetails get huge there too! 200 lb dressed is not uncommon.

I used to run an Inn for my family in NH. In about 3 weeks time in late September and early October, we'd do about 30% of the year's business because of the leaves and the leaf peepers coming up by the busload to look at the colors. It is absolutely stunning to behold.

I grew up in New Ipswich NH and spent a lot of time in Maine, love it there. You can fish for Landlocked Atlantic Salmon, harvest more than 1 deer, draw a moose permit every couple of years, big whitetails, 4 real seasons, real maple syrup...the list goes on. Just don't tell them you grew up in MA....lol

Since I've moved out here in '89, I haven't looked back. Summers are humid as hell and the winters are really long and cold. All the houses in our town were about 200 years old and heated with oil. $500-600/month to heat your home in the winter with a wood stove burning.

I miss the whitetails. I had a science teacher in high school who had a maple sugar house and we'd go over and help with the condensing process. Pretty cool stuff.

I am worried about the cold...but wood stove does help keep the cost down, but cost of living is one of the reasons im leaving...i need land, and to get something in western WA with land in a decent area for under 200k is hard...I'm getting a 3bed house on Penobscot bay with 10 acres backed up to 1000 acres of huntable private farm land for 140k..I tried to come close to that here but couldn't, I do love it here and will miss it.

Oh you guys will like this one :chuckle: I called about the recreational shellfish licence a yesterday because I couldn't find any info on line. It's 1 dollar for the year and you are allowed a peck of clams, oysters, scallops, mussels ect. A day and season is 365 days a year .

So not sure if you know Pisgah State Park? There's a road called Jantti road there goes up into the park, the state purchased my grandparents homestead up there , my dad grew up on the mountain, no running water no electricity, pretty cool.

I grew up in a small paper mill town called Millinocket, right by Baxter State Park. Awesome memories. I go back to visit my whole family every year.

Great trout fishing, bear hunting, partridge hunting, and so much more. You'll love it.

Awesome. Check out the Allagash River. There's a lot of options up there for a 3-6 day canoe trip. My brother-in-law did this trip. http://www.allagashriver.com/ (http://www.allagashriver.com/)

I'll be visiting my folks mid-July to early August up there in the Bangor to Millinocket Region. My parents own a cabin on a lake up there and my father owns a float plane that we take out and fly to small ponds, lakes for fishing trips or just to go spot deer, moose, bear.

PM me with your contact info and I'll share some ideas of places to go, sights to see, and suggest some good fishing/hunting spots.

I have a relative considering buying property in Maine. Like 100 acres or so. I am curious if anybody knows if landowners can get landowner tags for moose or deer.
Title: Re: Moving to Maine
Post by: janttihunter on April 18, 2014, 07:15:14 PM
40 acres or more you do not need a licence for deer or turkey. 10+ acres no licence if its used for agriculture only.

Cool thanks. Would I need to buy a license as a non resident hunting the family property?

Any word on landowner tags?

Do folks from Maine get mad about not being able to hunt on Sundays? It seems like an outdated law
Title: Re: Moving to Maine
Post by: pianoman9701 on March 12, 2015, 12:22:21 PM
Yeah, the no hunting Sundays are stupid. Yes, it's rooted in history and Puritan goodness, blah, blah, blah. Stupid. There are some really dumb laws still on the books in all of the New England states. Many are now ignored. Blue laws address "breeches of morality"

Yea I saw it on that Maine gammie show, wonder if hunters plan to get it off the books. Is there still strong puritan culture there? I was under the impression it is primarily a blur state

I had heard some guys out here speaking a different language.  Turned out they were actually from Maine.  But being from the western part, most of their business and trade and interactions were with Quebec.  So they all ended up primarily speaking French.
