Started the season off with a bang, with two youth hunters taking down 3 nice birds on opening weekend. Very narrowly missed taking home 4. Initially we had two birds down in Lincoln county by 9:00 on Saturday, then hightailed in back to Chelan county and had another bird down at 6:00 pm. This morning we set up right smack in the middle of what sounded like half of Central WA's turkey population. But somehow nothing wanted to come our way, despite the sweet talking with the Phelps Calls. The birds were henned up heavily, and after the flydown frenzy we didnt hear another gobble all morning. Still a very fun hunt, and it was the first bird for one of the youths and the second and third birds for the other.

Good luck everyone tomorrow! I'm gonna miss the opener for the second straight year due to work, but will do a quick evening hunt afterwards

First bird of the year goes down for me! After work yesterday, I made the hour and half drive to turkey country and set up in an area where we had several flocks of birds roosting on the youth hunt. In no time at all I had three hot gobblers below me on the ridge and it didn't take much sweet talking to coax one my way. 1/3 towards my Washington slam attempt!
-
Congrats and good luck on the slam!

Congratulations young man. It's nice to see all of your patience and hard work finally pay off. Beautiful birds, especially the last one. You'll have to give us the story on the Eastern..........
-
Awesome job! Sweat pics. Ready for the write ups.
-
That last bird is a real trophy. Nice long full beard and very nice hooks.
-
Congratulations, you deserve that Eastern. I'm really happy for you.

Well heres the story of that bird. Saturday morning we got up and 3:00, were at the gate by 4:00 and hiked in 2-3 miles and were set up on the edge of some mature timber. A gobbler fired up around 5:45, but sat in the tree till nearly 7:45. Eventually he pitched off to our right and behind us and didnt gobble after that. After waiting a while longer we moved to a new location to regroup. Sat there over an hour with nothing going on. At that point it was around 9:30 am, so we slipped out of there to leave him for another day and continued hiking up the road. Every 500 yards or so I tried to get one to shock gobble on the crow call. Finally, nearly two more miles up the road one answered back!! :yike: We were near the top of the ridge and he sounded like he was halfway between the crest and the bottom. We bailed off the ridge back down the road and hit a skidder that took off in his direction. Took us roughly ten minutes to make a move on him and he gobbled 4 more times as we moved in on him. We rounded a corner and a long straight stretch in the road lay ahead. Daring to go nor further, I quickly set out 2 hens on the road and backed into the woods. Settled in and began to cluck and purr on the slate. He answered and he was close! :yike: Sounded like he was just beyond the bend. Game on! Rather than continue to try to call, I took the advice of most other Eastern hunters and went silent. 20 minutes go by... the birds gobbles 4 times in that span. Each time a little closer. Finally he peeks around the corner at 80 yards. Just his head visible. :peep: A couple dozen eternities come and go and finally he steps out into full view. He sees the decoys. Bursts into half strut. Time passes painfully slow as he carefully high steps our way. Suddenly it hits me. The uncontrollable shaking caused by buck fever, or in this case turkey fever. 70 yards. 60. 50. 40. My heart is in full overdrive as he pulls up and freezes at 35 yards. For one paralyzing second I think he has me busted. Steady pressure on the trigger, then.... BOOOOM! Down he goes!! :IBCOOL: First Eastern down for me and I already know I'm hopelessly addicted
-
Heck of a nice bird.... congrats

BEARPAW i emailed you

You did good! Going silent and letting him do the rest was probably the key, although you never know. I would have done exactly the same. Absolutely beautiful Eastern.
-
Great write up.  You made me stop moving at my desk as he was staring at me from around that bend. :chuckle:
Thank You for sharing.

You having that big boy mounted? That's probably the nicest Eastern I've seen come out of Washington
-

".......a couple dozen eternities later........"
Best phrasing of the year. Everybody on this forum understands this painful void. Very well done, Sir!

Just so folks know this single season slam was not a fluke! I think it was ten or eleven months ago that MerriamMagician contacted JPhelps and myself. I received regular detailed scouting reports and questions (which was really cool!). This guy worked his tail off following every lead and making his own discoveries. I don't know if I have ever seen someone exhaust so much time and energy tracking down every conceivable tip and possibility. And for a dumb turkey!!! I can't imagine what would happen if he ever decided to get this interested in a big bull elk ;) I am left utterly impressed! Not only by the best looking Eastern I have seen come out of this state, but by the way MerriamMagician went about preparing for this spring season!
I'm not sure I was all that much help. But, it was fun being taken along on the journey through your PM's and emails! Great job buddy! If ever someone deserved this...you'd be the man
Completely and totally awesome!

Nicely done!

Just want to second what Rad said above. I had the opportunity to visit with MerriamMagican last year as well as earlier this year on his dedicated pursuit of an Eastern. What a great effort and willingness to stick to it, even after falling short of his Eastern a year ago. There have been a handful of dedicated folks on here willing to give their all. With that comes success, like the birds posted on this thread. I won't mention their names, but they know who they are and can chime in if they wish.
I've seen many nice Easterns taken over the years in western Washington and that bird ranks right up there with the best of them. Just can't think of anyone more deserving than MerriamMagican and those like him who have put in the effort and done the same. Not an easy task by any stretch, especially if one waits too long to go after the Eastern. After May, it gets really tough, as they tend to be more receptive early, and not so much later. Just my observations......
This is what hunting is all about...........again Congratulations to a dedicated young man!

Just wanted to say that to some of us, well myself, getting an Eastern especially a big Tom I felt just as much pride and accomplishment as I did as when I tagged my first Bull Elk. It may be just me, but they are every bit as hard as an Elk, for I always said was once they were planted the first thing they did was find the Elk and asked" Where you guys hiding at?" And took their advice.

Great story too. one Helluva Bird!
-
Wow congratulations great job. Did you do it on public private or a mix of both? Either way fantastic work!
-
Saw this snake in a slash pile this weekend in stevens county. Anyone know what kind it is and if their common around here? I've never seen one like that before.
-
Did some research and I think it might be a Rubber Boa.

Not too much to report these days in Merriams turkey camp. Last weekend was a hard hunt in Stevens county. We were on birds, but had bad weather to deal with and I can honestly say that our good ole merriams gave us fits to try to hunt. So this weekend we relocated closer to home in Central Wa. :bdid: Didnt hear a bird gobble all weekend. Very frustrating. :bash: However we got lucky this morning and my buddy manged to salvage a jake out of the hunt as he came sneaking in around 10:00 am this morning to investigate the decoy. Now, he lies just one eastern short of a mini slam of his own, and I'll be around next weekend to try to help him close the deal. We'll see how the late season easterns decide to treat us. :peep:
