Title: Life of a compound bow string???
Post by: Weehunt66 on April 07, 2014, 07:53:14 PM
Curious.. How often do you change out your string and cables. I shoot a Mathews DXT and was wondering what kind of life I should be looking for.

Thanks

Depends on how much you shoot I run about 100 arrows a year some guys thousands I chand mine every 3 years. But it also depends on how you take care of your bow storage, bad weather and such. Last time I changed them the pro shop said I was crazy .that I had a long time to go guess for me its just piece of mind.

For me its a piece of mind to not go over two years if im not shooting a lot. You cant tell just by looking at a string if it will cut loose or not. The material the string is made out of plays a role in how long they last along with care and uv exposure among lots of other factors :twocents:

Here are some factors to think about... How often do you wax your string? How much shooting do you do? What kind of bow do you have?

The last one is pretty important. The Cams on many of the newer bows have some fairly sharp curves that will wear you string out quickly. The speed comes at a price. the 2 things you should do on a regular basis is 1 wax your string, 2 inspect the serving on your strings. The serving is the "wrap" around the actual bow string. it is located where you knock the arrow, and also where the pulleys travel over the string. The serving is there to protect the string. You can have your strings re served, and i have had that done. IF you string has lots off fiber comeing off it and is looking more like yarn than dental floss then its likely time to get a new string, and start waxing the new one to make it last.

I'm shooting about 750-1000 a year on my switchback and have been shooting the string for about 5 years now. I take good care of my string, and i will likely change the string out before hunting season this year.

what are some good places to get a new bow string from? recently talked to sportsman's warehouse and they order from winners choice but I'm also looking for other places to go through with possible better prices.

I run Winners Choice strings and cable and replace them every year after shooting 3-4000 arrows. Been thinking about trying out XXX's G-Strings next year though

I think if it like car or truck tires. With more wear and tear, you need to change them out sooner. Or when in doubt, change them out. I average 2 years on a set.
