ST. GEORGE — Two men from Washington and Beaver were reported dead Monday after a helicopter crash in a remote part of Emery County.
Robin Venuti, 38, from Washington, and Albert Rubio, 36, from Beaver, reportedly left Green River at about 11 a.m. on Sunday, but were reported missing nine hours later. The pair had set off in search of elk antler sheds, according to the Grand County Sheriff's Office.
Search crews from the Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Department of Agriculture searched Carbon, Grand and Emery counties before finding the wreckage in the Range Creek area.
Deer, elk and moose shed their antlers in winter before sprouting new pairs in the spring. Collectors who take a required course can legally gather the antlers in Utah

Who wants to take bets on when this will happen in WA?

I take it Beaver is a town in Utah... :dunno:

I was going to say, that's some Die Hard shed hunting. No disrespect or bad pun intended. I wonder if the Washington man was a member or knew of the site. As far reaching as this site is now, I bet if not, someone on here probably knows him.

Unbelievable. You have to take a "special" course to go pick something up off the ground? How stinkin rich do you have to be to afford a helicopter to look for sheds anyway? Hope Utah bans that practice.

I've been fishing in the cascades, only to have a helicopter land and a couple guys bail out to fish after I had hiked in. I suppose I would if I could. I know I have found stuff that I wish I had a helicopter to lift it out,,,cool rocks and stuff.

Actually not too stinking rich really, quite affordable.
You can purchase a Robinson R22 used around 120k and up
If you are licenced to fly helo's you can lease one for around 115 per hr....
-
I guess that would depend on a person's definition of "affordable." :o

R22 is a real piece of junk. I wouldn't fly in one for any money.

Yea there was some of that happening up Scatter Lake and they got turned into the sheriff last year.
It is unfortunate that these gentlemen passed on that way, Not sure if I would call it hard core shed hunting or an expensive hobby.
I have a buddy in Ak that has flown over area in a plane, located moose sheds then hiked in to retrieve them.
-
I'm guessing they had some monster bucks or bulls pin pointed in a specific area and REALLY, REALLY wanted their sheds before anyone else could get there. Sad.
-
I was out hiking yesterday and there was a helicopter flying fairly low around the oak creek area. Not sure if it was game department or someone getting really exicited to find something before May 1st. After the 14 miles I put on my feet and seeing the helicoper flying around I did have a moment of weakness and wish I was in it as long as someone else was paying the hourly rate!

I know the area they were at quite well - there's nothing like it in Washington. Some of the canyon areas around there where deer and elk winter are virtually impossible to reach except by helicopter. Very remote areas around there that you can hike into with a great deal of difficulty, but you sure couldn't pack much back out. Going out of Green River I'm surprised they found them as quickly as they did.

Drones will be the way of searching for sheds in the future. :twocents:
