Thought Id Try This And See How It Goes. My Daughter And I Made A Scouting Trip Today. Found Some Real Promising Sign . Didn't Plan On Hunting The First Week, But After Finding This I Might Make It Out Tuesday If The Weather Is Nice.
We Found These Three Piles Within 50 To 75 Yards.
-
Might be a place to hang around and you might get lucky, I would.
-
Nice doo doo pics!
-
Well done. You are on the bear.
-
Seen quite a few out in the grass munchin recently..finding some good sized plugs floating in several ponds earlier this spring. But as of yet, no spring season yet over in chelan county.. :(
-
You're off to a good start.
-
Which unit are you hunting Sled?
-
He has a Monroe tag.

Thanks For The Good Luck Wishes! I Need It! I'll Be Heading Out Tommorow Rain, Or Shine. Maybe With My Daughter In Tow If Mom Is Working. Took Her With Me On Sunday Scouting And She Loved It, Just Not Real Quiet yet :chuckle:
IM Going To Make The Most Of This Permit Though,And It Is Fun With Her Up There With me.
-
Good for you I hope you get a monster and your little girl is there when it happens.
-
She is a cutie. Good luck.
-
keep us all posted. I will be up there as time allows in a Blue Durango. Sometimes I will have my son along as well.

I'll.Be In A Dodge Truck. Grey. I'll Look For You. Where You At The Mill Creek Meeting?

Let me know if you want any help with anything. I had the tag a few years ago and know a couple of spots worth looking at. I can also help recover/pack one out.

Iwas there with my son. We are taking off today to turkey hunt through the weekend, then it is bear time.
-
Good luck! I'll be towing my daughter in a few years, as well! Can't wait!
-
I'll be out in the Monroe this weekend, silver tacoma black canopy. I will probably take my 3yr old out with me one of these times but not this weekend. She really wants to come with but I'm certainly not taking with if I have to track a wounded one. Do we have a call list for packouts / tracking help?
-
Even Though It Was Pretty Much Poring Rain The Family Jumped In The Truck And Went FoR A Drive. We Went To The Same Place We Scouted On Sunday Hoping To Find More Fresh Poo. Not A Thing. IM A Little Disappointed, But If I Was A Bear I Wouldn't Have Been Out Feeding Tonight Either.
Going To Hit It Again After Work Tommorow, And Maybe Take Friday Off If I Can Find Something Promising.
-
It is early. You have all sorts of time. It will get much better the later it gets.

:yeah:
I would spend some time scouting with the pickup, learning the roads the first couple of weeks. Especially, if it's raining :chuckle:
-
I agree. Save your days off until mid to late May. I made the mistake of taking vacation time early in the season then couldn't take time off when things got more active.
-
I have a couple cams you can use sled just let me know when you want to set them up.
-
Went Up Tonight In The Pouring Rain Again And Drove Some Roads. No Fresh Sign Anywhere In The New Area.
Gonna Hit It Again Tommorow.
-
Loved the driving and exploring.

Hopefully your bear hunting prowess is akin to your shift button skill.

Id Like To, But I Would Feel Bad If They Ended Up Getting Stolen. I Might Try To Pick Up A Couple This Weekend. I Wonder If Cabelas Still Has The Bushnell 2 Pack.

Tonight I Went From An All Time High To About As Low As You Can Get! I Shot A Good Bear At 5:00 Pm. Called Turner89 And Him And His Son Came Out To Help Out. Thank You Very Much Guys! My Shot Was 200 Yards QuarTering Away. The Bear Stood Up On It's Back Legs And Went Over Backwards, Kicked A Few Times, Then Got Up And Disappeared Into The Tree Line. An Hour Later We Went In. About 40 Yards Into The Trees His Son Picked Up The Blood Trail. The Blood Color Ranged From Bright Red With No Bubbles To A Darker Red Then Almost A Black Color toward The End. The Trail Took Us Somewhere Around 300 Yards. One Spot We Found ASmall Chunk Of Meat.tThe Trail Ended UpAbout 50 Yards In The Timber From Where I Shot Comming BacK Up The Hill. There Was Blood Spots Ranging From The Size Of Two Palms Flat To Drops. One Place It Crossed A Log Over A Small Swamp That Had Blood All The Way Across It. About 15 Yards Long. The Blood Trail Ran Thin When It Got Dark. IM Heading Back Out With My Brother In Law At 5 Am To Search. Any Thoughts On How The Meat Will Be If I Find Him In The Morning.
THIS SUCKS BAD!
-
Tough call on the meat depends on when he expieres. Good luck bud hope you find him.
-
Sounds like a liver hit. Sucker is taking you in to the swamp. He's gonna look for something tangled and nasty to die in.
-

:yeah: good luck on the search. Should be in there somewheres.
-

Yeah. He Went Into And Headed Back Out Of The Swamp. The Thing That Concerns Me The Most Is How Far He Went. I Didn't Think A Hard Hit Bear Would Go That Far Which Is Making Me Question My Shot. I Took The Long Shot Because IM Good For It. Spent Alot Of Time At The Range Shooting 225.
-
Get to sleep now and go find him in the morning.
-
Get to sleep now and go find him in the morning.
I Won't Sleep A Wink. I'll Tell You One Thing For A Fact Is That IM Out Of Shape.
-
:they are toughest animal in my IMOP seen them go a long ways being shot.
Don't give chase in the dark ever, they will lay in wait for you, then when find them they will attack you if they haven't died.
-
It Also.Didn't Appear To Bed Down At All. Mainly Looked Like It Was Just walking :dunno:
-
Good luck in the morning! Meat should still be good, at least the big cuts. Sounds like a liver hit to me as well.
-
Good luck in the search.
-
Here's another picture of the same log. We couldn't find any real signs of a hard hit. I think that bear will heal up. :twocents: It wasn't raining, but the ground was pretty wet. Hopefully you can get back on him Sled.
-
I hope he can find him.
-
Ahhhh! Go get that bear, you can do it! Best of luck...wish I was able to run out there with you and look.
-
I'm pulling for you sled, hope you find the bear.
-
Hoping to hear a good end to this story. Really hoping you are enjoying a beer right now celebrating a recovered spring bear.
Good Luck and can't wait for the update.
-
No new news....worried for Sled. Hope they are on the trail.
-
Well I Just Got Home. we Picked Up The Trail At 6:30. Followed The Trail For Another 250 To 300 Yards. Finally Lost Blood In Reprod And Chest High Blackberries. We Started Doing Circles At The Last BloodIn About A 100 Yard Radius. While On The Trail We Did Find More Small Peices Of Meat, And Hair.
All Together The Bear Traveled 5 To 6 Hundred Yards After It Was Hit. We Looked For Almost 7 Hours Today And Now It Is Pouring Rain. We Even Checked Under Stumps And Logs. It Just Didn't Seem Like It Ever Stopped Moving. It Also Never Bedded Down In That Distance.
I Feel Like Absolute *censored*.
Here Are Some Pics From Todays Trail.
-
That looks like a dead bear. :dunno: I wonder if you contacted the local warden could they use their KBD? I doubt it but you might want to try. That sucks for sure. This is a time when they should allow hounds at least for recovery. :twocents:
-
Lotta blood...still looks fresh in your pics. Stay with it until you are satisfied then get back out hunting.

It's Raining Hard Now So Any Blood Will Be Gone Soon. IM Going Back In The No. Morning To Look Around Once More.
The Fact That It Never Bedded Down And The Distance It Went Has Me Very Concerned.
-
Look for birds tomorrow. ...
-
If you go back in tomorrow morning, if you want, i will bring my blood hound. ("The boy") to sniff around. Let me know.
-
Oh man what a heartbreaker. :sry:
-
Sled don't beat yourself up things happen. He probably is still moving maybe a shot that didn't work out. Happens to everyone. If it were me I'd look again and make a decision to proceed. Good luck my friend you'll find another maybe even get anothershot at that bear. :twocents:
-
You have a great spot there. Those bears want to be in there. If he makes it, there's a good chance you will get another shot at him.

You Think So? Even after Beating The Brush Like That?

If you have a good area I would keep going back. Doesn't matter if you been beating the brush with how much it rained your sent is no longer in issue.
As long as you are where the food is the bears will be there
Good luck out there

yea, I do think they/He will still be in there. A lot of people walk/bike in there, and they are used to human scent. By next weekend that place will be back to normal.
Like I said, I haven't seen that much sign, this early ever up there. I personally wouldn't leave that spot until I tagged one , or the sign went old.
-
I was up in the unit today also, saw some sign in one spot but no bruins for me. I have these forensic tablets that you dissolve then spray and they make blood glow. You use them in the dark I think. You want to try them? Supposedly rain won't wash away the track for at least a year for these. I'll be back up in the unit next weekend .
-
Was it actual meat or maybe blood clot (clotted blood) that you were finding? I have found clots that looked a lot like meat before. Just trying to get a better picture of events. I had thought liver at first, not sure now.
That is a lot of blood for a bear when you don't find it, personally I would say it is most likely dead. If it were hard hit though you would think it would have deeded or at least stopped. Potentially a tearing shot in a large muscle group (front shoulder?) that bleeds copiously but is not quickly fatal.
It is a rotten feeling, good luck.
-
I know exactly how you feel, i've been through the same thing. Except the HW was way more self-righteous to me! I pretty much did not sleep that first night wondering where it was and if I had missed something. I didn't have near the blood trail that you did. It was just fine drips even from the start but seemed to seal itself up like yours did. The clearcut I shot it at the bear the never returned to, i checked it out multiple times over the coming months and there was never anymore sign there and it was TORE up at the time I shot the bear.
Can you share the details of how you spotted it / set up for a shot? Placement, caliber, distance? Was it the spot you found a lot of poop at? Did you call it in? Was it sunbathing? Were there fresh tree peels in the area? Clearcut?
-
I Went Back In Today For Another Look And Came Up With Nothing. At This Point I Don't Know What To Think. Obviously Not A Good shot.
The Spot I Was Was Along A Road. It Was Feeding On Grass In The Sunlight. When I Spotted It It Was quartering Away Feeding Up Hill. My Shot Was Almost Exactly 200 Yards. I Was Able To Take The Shot From Prone Position, And Had Been To The Range Shooting 200+ Yards Hitting Everytime. I Was Shooting A Springfeild Socom 308 cal With A Burris Scout Scope, And Federal 165 Grain Bullets.
Not The Same Place As The Pics With The Poop, But There Was Alot Of Poop In The Area.
-
We had a similar blood trail and experience about 15 years ago up Stevens Pass. Tracked the bear for about a half mile with pretty darn good blood the whole way. Three weeks later CL and I were back up there and I shot the same bear feeding like nothing had ever happened to him. The shot from three weeks before was almost completely healed. Shot had been too steep an angle and the bullet glanced up the ribs, under the shoulder blade and out in front of the shoulder with a good 30 cal bullet.
The shot I got on him three weeks later was with the 257 Roberts and 117 grain Hornady's. About 500 yards from where I had hit him the time before. Stuck one right up his nose as he looked at us. That did the trick :chuckle: Was nice to know they heal so quickly with no serious issues. They are pretty dang tough critters.
CL took a spring bear in Monroe two years ago. Medium sized bear with only three legs. Couldn't tell if he lost it fighting or from an old gun wound. Bugger was getting it done and a guy would never have known if it was in some tall grass. I'm not sure CL realized it only had three legs until he rolled it over to field dress.
My biologist friend told me, "Bear are made to fight. Boars and even sows get torn up all the time and recover with no lasting effects. Don't ever assume you killed one unless you find it - They're tough bass turds."
One thing for certain, you know without question you gave it your best try. That's all anyone can hope for and expect. I hope you can be fortunate enough to have the repeat opportunity I had when I got a second crack at the my escape artist and succeeded. Good Luck
-
Back in the baiting days I remember one of my dads buddies shooting a bear with a bow and never recovering it that anothe buddy shooting the same bear weeks later on a different bait 2miles up the road arrow still in it from the first shot.
-
I think your good sled get back out there and fill that permit.we have all lost animals it happens at least your one of the few that actually puts forth the effort to track wounded game.a lot of people don't have respect for the game thet hunt.
-
You did what you can. Good on you. Now go get one.
-
Before I Left Today I Hung A Trail cam In Hopes That Maybe He Will Live And Come Back. If He Does I Will Hunt Him The Rest Of The Season.
I Think IM Going To Take A Few Days Off And Let The Trail Cam Work To See What I Get. I Am Quite Confident That There Are Several Bears In The Area, But Righ Now IM Not Sure What IM Going To do.
I Can't Belive The Weird Dreams I've Had About This. :yike: :bash:
-
Sounds like that bear is still walking around. I've trailed wayyyy heavier blood trails from them for more than 1.5 miles and jumped the same animal the next day and it ran like it had slept all night on a sleep number mattress. Tough critters.
Were you practicing shooting prone at 200? There's a big difference in sitting at a bench and shooting prone uphill at 200 yards. Could have easily pulled a shot enough to miss the vitals. Get back out there and find that bear
-
I Went Back To The Spot I Shot The Bear Tonight To Check My Trail Camera. Been Up Since Sunday Afternoon And Had No Pics. I Then Went ToA Spot Near The Last Blood To Listen And Look For Birds And Heard Nothing. I'll Check The Camera Later This week.
-
That bear isn't dead.
-
Start hunting again find another one. Save some fawns

Bears is alive-same thing for my buddy shot a bear with his bow. Bear comes back to the same bait a week later and he shoots it again. Helped him get it out and the arrow was still in the bear and had punctured one lung. Go kill another bear you have done way more than a lot of guys do in recovery. or kill the same one!
-
Go find another.

DRock is really good at finding wounded bears... I'm really good at making them.
For the reasons you've just identified, I now hunt bears with a .375 H&H. They're tougher than elk from what I've seen.
-
I went up to 300wsm 180gr tsx after i wounded on with 308 150gr fusions. I'm hoping my spring bear will die quick except if it decides to crawl to the truck before expiring. :chuckle:

Its because you're afraid. This August I'm going to arrow one.

Some of us just choose to not hunt with an ASSAULT RIFLE. Some of us can get it done with a piddly lil 'ol .270.

.375 is an elephant gun, not an assault rifle, however I do know that assault rifles are somewhat effective. You'll have your time where you don't walk up and see bears lounging in the sun at 20 yards and make a shot that slightly more difficult or have a bear thats a little tougher than the wimps you've been messing with.
Your time will come.
-
Valid points....well said.
Now...Sled...go kill a bear then we can skin it in my garage.....the gimble is hung and waiting....and enjoy a beverage.

Maybe if you did not stink and learned how to be real hunter and stalk you could get to within 20yds of a lounging bear... :dunno:

I'll have my meat cooler finished up by the regular bear season, so even this... I will take from you

I plan on using that meat cooler a few times this year.

So Axe body spray is bad?
Besides...I've shot bears all they way out to 35 yards so there.
Back to business....Sled...you going out this weekend? Sunday? Need some company?

. But H20 just stumbles upon them by accident. The only think he stalks is the doughnuts at the bakery on the way home.
-
Mmmmm.....doughnuts.
I stick with what works!
-
Anything new Sled? Good luck and get a big old bugger.
-
H20 smells like donuts, take him with you and the bears get to that food drunk stupor and stand in .270 range.
Close enough that even if you mess up your handloads to the point where your bullets dont expand, the bear will still die.
-
Oh you wound me sir!
Sled....I'm good mojo.....just let me know what time you are picking me up Sunday...let's go get it done!

That's An Awsome Offer. I Wouldn't Count On A Bear Roast though :chuckle: My Plan Is To Check My Cam On Friday, Then Figure Out What To Do From There. We Need To Get Together Soon. I Need To Look Into The Bbq Thread To Find Out When It Is To Make Plans.

Looks like you girls need something to do at work :chuckle: all the chitchat during work hours is bad example for the bamacare folks

-
Just read the thread... thats crazy that bear didnt die with all that blood! Way to keep after it!
Good luck on finding another!
-
Have you checked out the area where we both missed bears years ago? May be an area to look. :dunno:

I Know That Road Well, But Have No Idea Why They Would Have Closed It. I Got The Email Also.

Went Up To Check The Cam Tonight With My Daughter And Had No Pics. We Were Both Disappointed. Oh Well. We Had A Nice Hike And Had Fun Being quiet :chuckle:
-
Haha I remember the one time I took my wife hunting, "you mean I can't talk!??" She said. Greatest date ever.
-
Spent The Whole Day Out Today. Saw Two Cyotes, 1 Deer, And 1 Grouse. Also Found More Poo. The Bear Poo Speared To Be A Down, And A Cub. It Was About 15 Yards Apart. Found A Heck Of A Blacktail Rub Line Also. Only Took One Pic Of A RuB, But There Was A rub Every Ten Yards For A Hundred Or So.
-
That is a nice rub.
-
Well that's sure nice that gots 14 is now closed :bash: :bash:. Guess I'm glad I didn't get drawn. Any reason for the closure?

oh well I guess.
-
The biggest surprise to me during my spring bear hunt is how many big blacktails live in this area. I saw many many big rubs and live deer. There is no shortage that's for sure.
-
Checked The Cam Again Today, And Again No Pics. I'll Be Out All Day Again Tommorow.
-
Went Out Today For Most Of The Day. No Luck. Saw One Grouse. I'll Be Out Wed, Or Thurs When It Warms Up. I'll Probably Pull A Day off.

Saw the sign they posted today, stated.
"AREA NOW CLOSED TO SPRING BEAR HUNT, DUE TO PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERNS, WADNR 4/25/14"
So it sounds like if the general public calls in and says they are concerned for their safety the DNR will shut down a road system. Never seen this sign during any fall hunting season. If I had this spring tag I would raise hell.
-
I'll Call Today. Now You've Got Me Curious. What Time Did You See The Sign? I Went By In The Afternoon And Didn't See it :dunno:
-
It was there around 230 ish, posted on a tree next to the gate.

One more challenge to filling a tag. Bummer deal.
-
Lames on the closure for "public safety" though when I checked out the are it didn't really pique my interest.

I Have Put Cams Behind That Gate In The Summer And Gotten Some Nice Bear Pics. They Were Always At Night Thought.
I Sent Cole From Dfw An Email.Tonight Asking why.
-
Tried Something Different Tonight. I Sat. Four Hours Tonight In An Area I Have Seen Some Poo. Half Hour Before Dark I Heard A Large Log, Or Branch Break About 50 Yards Behind Me But Didn't See Or Hear Anything Else.
I Did Have A Very Cool, And Curious Bug Visit Me Tonight. Zoom In On Him And Take A Look. Then On The Way Out Saw A Deer. Sorry For The Crappy Pic, But I'll Post It Anyway.
I Got An Email Today From Cole At The dfw. He Said Gate 14 Was Closed Because People On Horses Say They Had Bullets Flying By Them, And Someone May Have Been Hurt In Some Way.
Took The Day Off Tommorow So I'll Be Heading Out For The Day. With This Warm Weather I Had To. I'll Start By Checking My Cam. If There Is No Pics I'll Probably Move it.
-
Deer and bear in the same area, sounds like a spot for fawn in distress calling?
-
I've Actually Found Alot Of Deer Sign Everywhere. IM Thinking About Getting An Electronic Caller Since I Lack The Skills Of A Mouth call :chuckle:
-

So , we got some horse back riders complaining that "bullets" were wizzing by...the legal depradation bear hunters get blamed for it, betcha those horse back riders didnt even have a discover pass..Did you ask what kind of investigation took place, dfw or dnr enforcement or both?
-
What on earth are you hunting with?
-
AK?
-
Bears and assault weapons I don't like it. Been there done that.
-
Springfeild Socom. 308 Cal.
-
The Peeling Has Begun.
-
Oh yeah....some fresh peels there.
-
Here's my new go to bear method don't stop shoot until you run out of bullets.
-
Wow tuff crowd, now i know why i wont start a thread about hunts....
You are into some sign for sure sled, keep at it and it will happen soon..

Not Another Anti. :bash: Any Firearm Is An Assault Weapon If You Assault Someone With it.
I Refuse To Allow Society To Dictate What Weapon I Can And Cannot Hunt with :chuckle:
I Do Alternate Rifles Often DependingOn Conditions.

Dude you are in the spot! Keep it up, hope you tag out soon!
-
So which road is Rd 14? I'm just curious because I had the Tag before and I plan on getting again. Friggin horse people! The WDFW shouldn't let anti-hunters dictate when and where we hunt.

Meh.....he is just jealous that he doesn't have the tag. Good luck this weekend, hope you tag one.

Tonight After Work I Set Up My Cam In A New Spot Where I've Seen Poo Every Other Day. I'll Hunt Tommorow In The Spot Where I Found The Recent Peels. I'll Go Into The Timber And Sit Awhile.
-
Hiked Into The Spot I Found The Peels Tonight, And Was Absolutely Amazed At What I Saw. From The Spot One Of The Peels I Took A Picture Of I Could See About 10 More Peels In The Timber. I Didn't Snoop Around Off The Trail Trying Not To Disturb The Area. The Spot Is In ThetiTimber But It Is So Thick. IM Thinking IM Going To Take Another Day Off Soon And Plant My But In There For The Day. Only Problem Is IT Will Be Hard To Get A Shot Unless It's Comes Within 20 To 30 Yards.
-
Can't wait to see pics....keep at it and good luck.
-
Your in the right area with all that sign! Shouldn't be long now...

D-Rock just wishes he could afford an assault bear gun (which he could probably do if he didn't buy a new arrow slinger every year). He wishes his little child gun had rapid fire capability or a bullet the size of a .308.
He doesn't love bears... I think I've actually heard him say "I hate bears... *$%& bears". If he had a M1A he'd be using it too.
One thing I've learned about battle rifles and bears is that you should use that rapid fire capability and keep shooting until you see it roll up, unless you like tracking bears in the dark.
-
:chuckle: Well So Far I've Learned After The First Shot To Get Back On Them And Hammer It Again.i Don't Know If I Could Have Gotten A Second Shot Off On The One I Shot But I Should Have Tried. I Saw The Shockwave IM Sure When The Bullet Hit And I Thought It Was Game Over. Then It Got Up And ran :bash:
-
Went And Sat IM My Peel Spot Tonight With No Action. Followed A Trail That Led Me About Half Mile To A Road Where I Found 6 Piles O Poo In A Quarter Mile.
No IM Trying To Figure Out If There Is More Than One Bear Or A Couple In The area :dunno: No Fresh Peels I Could See, And The Poo Was Dark On The Outside But Green In The Middle. Some Of It Had bugs In It So IM Guessing Few Days Old.
Daughter And I Are Going To Check The Camera Tommorow Then Maybe Move It If There Is Nothing On It.
I Can't Seem To Catch Up To The One Making The Peels.
-
Sat At My peel Spot Again Tonight. When I Got In There There Was A Fresh Peel Ten Yards Away From Where I sit :bash: Saw A Track On The Trail In. Judging By The Size I Think It's A Smaller Bear.
-
I'm hoping to go out tomorrow and maybe put a couple cameras out. If i see or hear anything i'll let you know.

The biggest surprise for me from my hunt was that lack of response from calling does not mean they aren't there. I called for 3 hours total in different spots yesterday surrounding the spot where the bear walked out of at twilight.

Fantastic! That's a PIG of a spring bear.
Looks like he has some rear foot issues :dunno: Is he just rubbed there or is that left ankle twisted a bit? Maybe he's just so fat he couldn't get those feet all the way off the ground :chuckle:
I'm happy for you. Very nice!

It's The Weirdest Damn Thing. The Tops Of Both His Back Feet The Hair Was Worn Down To Skin. No Muscular, Or Skeletal Damage At All. Taxidermist Thought It Might Be From Climbing Trees?
I Did Cut Open The gut, And It Was About 50/50 Grass, And cambium layer.
-
Looks like it was drug instead of carried but doesn't matter that is what taxis take care of   .
-
Taxidermist Thought It Might Be From Climbing Trees?
Not sure I have ever seen a bear climb a tree with the tops of his feet :chuckle:
I've seen that before back when guys would use molasses on bear baits. Dumb bear would lick the hair completely off their sticky feet. Maybe he found some good Pooh Bear honey somewhere :dunno:
I've also seen dogs do that after getting into porcupines. But that would be odd for the hind legs. Devils club maybe?
Just adds to the story of a great bear! One I expect you won't be forgetting any details of for decades. Looking forward to the story if and when you get some sleep.

No Way! I Shot It Right On The Side Of The Road, Then Hiked Back To The Truck, And In He Went. Doesn't Get Any Better Than that :chuckle: Only Packing I Did Was From The Ground To The Tailgate :chuckle:
For My First Bear I would Have Quartered It Before I Drug It. He Has The Most Beautiful Thick Hide. Besides His Back feet :chuckle:
-
Sorry I don't know where the hair went . All I Know is you saved fawns and good job

It Was Weird. Almost Like A # 1 On Hair Clippers, And He Got A Hair Cut On His Feet. One Was Almost Down To The hide :dunno:

It doesn't take very much to loose hair on anything taxis fix that:sry:

So The Story. Not Alot To Tell. I Sat In The Timber For A Couple Hours Where I Have Been Seeing Peels. Not Seeing Any New Ones I Decided To Go To My Other Method. I Started Walking Slowly, And Quietly On The Trails, And Roads. About Three Quarters Of A Mile I started Up A Winding Hill. As I Got To The Crest I Stopped For A Break, And To Listen. I Heard Rustling And I Could See The Salmon Berry Bushes On The Side Of The Road Waiving Around. I Figured It Was A Damn Deer Because TheRe Was No Way It Would Be An Actual Bear. After I Stood Ready In the Road For About 10 Minutes I Could Tell It Was Moving Away From Me. Every Time I Saw The Bushes Move I Would Take A Couple Steps Until I Closed The Distance To About 30Yards. About 5 Min Later He Stuck His Head Out And Looked Right At Me. I Took Him At The Base Of The Head And He Dropped Where He Stood. I Approached Him And Kicked Rocks At Him. He Blinked His Eyes!. I finished Him With 2 Rds Of 10Mm. Probably A Little Much, But I Didn't Want To Take A Chance. Best Part Was I Drove Right To Him And Loaded Him Up.
My Method Was To find Sign And Hunt Hunt. I Really Liked Walking Then Stop To Listen, Then A Little More The Stop. You Can Hear The Deer, And Bears In. The Area Before You See Them.
He Was Definitely A Tree Peeler. The Biologist Said The Sugars From The Trees Will Make Their Teeth Look Like Mines Did.
Thanks To Everyone That Encouraged Me To Keep Hunting, And Everyone Who Helped, And Offered To Help Me Out. It's Hard To Find People Willing To Help Someone They Don't Really know.
-
Congratulations. :tup:nice bear. And way to stay after it and put forth a solid effort.
-
Awesome job! I've been reading this thread everyday! And got excited when I saw "bear down"
-
Nice work Sled, congrats!!!
-
Nice job man that's a great looking bear!
-
Congratulations! That is a DANDY bear, a big one with an excellent coat on him. Curiosity drew me into this thread a week or so ago and have been checking daily and pulling for you to connect.
The way you walked up on the bear, heard him, saw the bushes move and kept easing up makes for one of the most adrenaline drenched stalks you could possibly have.
-
Love it. Redemption.
-
I'm super stoked you got one sled. You have had a tough go with bears.
-
Congradulations sled that is a beautiful bear and you earned it.
-
The feet could be the start of mange. I got these pictures last year, looks similar.
Congrats on a fantastic bear!
Good pics. It could be some kind of mange and I'd be curious to hear a bear biologist comment.
I suspect that is just a badly rubbed bear. I took the pics below of a similar spring bear that a bear guide friend said was rubbed. Some of them start rubbing winter hair off on their shoulders but I've seen a few with the old coat of hair gone from the back half of the body. One black bear my family watched for awhile had a ruff or mane of big matted hair all around his neck like an African lion and a bunch of people in a nearby campground were excited about the "grizzly". Nope, just a blondish brown black bear at the worst stage of shedding. Watched the bear below wade and swim a few strokes across a river so he is wet.

I was surprised how good our bear meat was also. Your right, no gamie taste at all. We had them both ate by the end of the summer.
-
Mine is not as good as elk but it's WAY Better than blacktail! Unfortunately with the 2 x 300WSM i punched through the front end I will polish off this meat in a few months. I'll definitely be looking for another one in August.

Went For A Hike And Look Around Where I Was Hunting Today. I Guess The Bear I Shot Wasn't The One I Was Hunting. There Is Still Fresh Sign Where I Was Hunting In The Peeled Tree Area. There Is Also Alot Of Salmon Berries Out That They Are Feeding On.
