My 16 month old black lab is sick and at the vet. She was lethargic yesterday until we hit the river and acted fine there. Came home and didn't want to eat which is very unlike her. She ended up throwing up twice so I thought she just had an upset belly. This morning she could barely walk so I called the vet and brought her in. She was very dehydrated and so she was put on an iv. Her blood work showed high levels of phosphorus and her bun was high so kidney issues are a possibility. They are keeping her tonight and running some more tests. Talk about a horrible feeling not knowing what is going on. I hope I can sleep tonight!

Sorry to hear. It's hard not knowing what's wrong. Hoping this turns out for the good. Hang in there...
-
not good, let us know how she does.. sounds like maybe she ingested something at the river, salmon head or fish hook maybe
-
Good luck to you. I hate it when I get a sick dog, I don't sleep well even if they are home.
-
Vet is thinking from the initial blood work it could be lepto or acute kidney issues. I feel sick just thinking about it
-
She is tuff little bugger, she will pull through
I got you and her in my prayers.

Thanks Pete. She has many birds to retrieve in her future

The IV will help. When they stop eating they stop drinking too. Hopefully the vet gets it figured out soon. Our pup was impacted and even after the anti-puking meds he couldn't pass anything. He recovered quicker then my hunting fund has... Best of luck, we'll keep you in our prayers.

Late last summer our male Golden Retriever started going downhill quickly after a family camping trip. He was sneezing kind of seizure like fits and had some blood coming out his left nostril. His blood work came back with “necrosis” somewhere is all the medical babble. The vet was basically stumped. Our vet ended up putting him on Prednisone (steroids) and 1 other thing I can't remember, but after a few weeks finally, he bounced back. Like yours he was very, very sick, lethargic, would not eat anything and he normally is a serious chow hound.
Good luck with your dog.

I am crossing my fingers that she just drank or ate something bad and that with the IV and some antibiotics that she will be better. I am praying it is nothing serious with her kidneys. I did a bunch of reading and of course, ended up scaring myself more then if I wouldn't have know some of the things. Sometimes knowledge isn't power... :bdid:

Vandeman17, I'm really sorry to hear about your pup. I hope everything turns out okay. I had my 9 year old lab get really sick back in August. I think it ended up being a seriously upset stomach from eating a slug. It had been dry for weeks and then rained one day. I watched her go outside to do her business and sniff the ground and it looked like she sucked something up but I wasn't sure. Late that night she was throwing up and running outside with the runs every 30 minutes. After a day of this she was taken to the vet. They ran a bunch of blood urine and fecal tests and basically she was slightly out of normal ranges on a couple of tests but they determined she just had a really upset stomach. Hope your situation ends up being the same.
I am wondering though how many of you all, especially on the West side, have your dogs vaccinated for Leptosirosis? I have not done this yet and am thinking it is probably a good idea given that there have been a few more cases diagnosed in Western Washington in the past few years.

Sorry for you both, sad deal when your pets are sick to this extent. Hope all is well and they figure out what is going on soon. Take care :sry:

Just got a call from the vet and they say she is feeling better. She ate this morning and hasn't thrown it back up which is good. Her blood work is showing more normal levels in her kidney counts which is a relief. They still can't say or don't know what caused it but it could have been a number of things. I do know that I am glad I brought her in when I did and didn't wait because who knows what could have happened. They are keeping her one more day and then I will bring her home tomorrow. :IBCOOL:

Out of curiosity, what dog food do you use?
We had two of our dogs come down with similar symptoms a week or two ago for no apparent reason. Both recovered within a day or two.

Could she have gotten into any rat bait?

well thats some good news, i know my little female was sick on saturday, she came in and puked twice, i think she played way to much and it was really warm out, she is back to normal now

Not that I can think of. She is either in the back yard, which she has been in every day since I got her, or when she leaves the back yard it is straight to my Tahoe to go wherever we are going. My only thought could be that she might have drank some bad water or ate something tainted when she was out of sight up in the hills a two weekends ago. They say it takes 10-14 days for the symptoms to show and that would be about the right time line.

Nature's Domain? The stuff in the blue bag with salmon? I ask because we keep pretty close track of the dogs and they haven't been in any areas I would expect a reaction like that. We were theorizing it was bad batch of food.
We feed Costco's Nature's Domain.

Had one get sick like that once, they assumed poison of some sort, turned out it was a Shrew, they are poisonious when dogs eat them, totally possible for her to have gotten one in the yard.My dog spent a night at the vet with a bananna bag and the next afternoon she was good to go coming home.Elevated temp and lethargic were her symptoms.
-
I could see her having eaten something bad. What has worried me before is there is a walking path between my house and my neighbor's house. Their dog run in on that side of the house too so it would be easy for someone to toss something over the fence. Not a whole lot of people walk through there but there are some sickos out there. :bash:

especially if cats are in the area they kill them and leave them. Then your dog finds them and eats one. :yeah:

Just to update everyone that I picked up the pup today and she is feeling much better. Vet still can't say for sure what it is that she got into or what caused her to get sick but at least she is better. My bank account took a hit but dogs are like family so it was worth it! She will be on antibiotics a few more days but the vet said she can assume her normal activities right away.

They are tough dogs and I know she was looking forward to retrieving my ducks for many years to come. No way she would miss out on that!

I had been buying the salmon until my dog got sick. She wouldn't eat or drink and would just lay in her dog house. I threw the dog food all out and switched to the red bag. Within a day she was back to normal.....

Rumor has it if the food sits too long on the pallet and/or at the wrong temperatures it will go bad. One of the things about Costco is it usually doesn't sit out for long. However...
I've got a lead in town on "reasonably" priced bags of Fromm dog food. I'll be switching my crew off Nature's Domain and onto Fromm in the next week or two and see how that goes.
To date the most consistent trouble free food I have fed them has been Purina Pro Plan performance, but the price of that is now hovering around the price of a bag of Fromm so...
-
Best food I have found is the Eukanuba performance but at like $60 a bag its hard to justify. My pup is still eating 6 cups a day and my older dog 3 so I go through 50 lb bags pretty quick

I am happy to hear your dog is doing well, & I commiserate with your financial distress as well. But as you stated they are "Family".
