Title: mouth or slate call
Post by: kisfish on April 23, 2014, 05:13:05 PM: I haven't been turkey hunting here in Washington but I have been reading all the post and thinking back on the great times I had hunting turkeys in Colorado. Congrats to those that have bagged a bird this year. So the question is what is your favorite call. Mouth, slate, or box call? I loved the mouth call for yelping and locating birds. I liked the slate for purring and soft clucking. One of the coolest calls I have is a slate on top of an old skoal can a ole boy in west Virginia made me with a hole in the bottom. I will have to dig in the hunting stuff to find it but I will try and post a pic.

Most of the time I use a mouth call, but I also carry a slate and glass call, along with a box. I recently went old school and added a wingbone and scratch box to my arsenal. The wingbone helped me get my ID bird fired up and finished with a mouth call.

Post by: packmule on April 23, 2014, 09:18:58 PM: It would be hard to pick between a box, slate, and mouth call.....the mouth call is probably the most deadly because it allows those final few calls without making movements as the turkey closes in. However, I think my box and slate calls are far more effective at locating and starting a turkey my way....I'd say a glass pot call I guess if I had to pick just one.

another call that has killed zillions of birds ...especially the originals from way back when ...Still have my dads that was made in 1958 ..love that call !

I called my first birds in with a Lynch box call back about 1980ish before we had a statewide season. Been hooked on turkey's ever since. I've bought and tried most types of calls but my favorite call is a glass call. I do like to use a mouth call but mostly for long distance calling.

:chuckle: I have never seen so many jake's as I did over with Bearpaw this year. Next year is certain to be crazy with fighting toms! We need more bowhunters to take those last few spots for next years opener. Would be sweet to see more birds taken at Bearpaw with the bow next year than with a gun ;) CL, Del and I are planning on doing our part :IBCOOL:

Daniel was out scouting around tonight and saw plenty of birds, should be good hunting until close to the end of this season. If we have another good hatch and another mild winter we'll be getting close to how it used to be in some areas. Bob says he is bringing his bow back on the opener and I might have a lady bowhunter lined up for next year opener too. :tup:

So I moved to the glass call for a different sound, it worked great for getting them talking but they were having no part of coming in. Later that day (same spot) they weren't responding to the glass to I pulled out the gobbler to see if any were around and the whole Dame woods lit up! I had never been in the middle of so many turkeys. Then I switched to my aluminum pot and the Ol Boss came sprinting in. I don't think there is any such thing as a bad call or caller I just think it's whatever the bird wants to hear. I mean they gobble a horns honking. :chuckle:
