Title: Work boots?
Post by: westside103147 on April 23, 2014, 05:54:11 PM
I'm in need of recommendations for a good pair of boots. My current boots are on there last leg and I need something in the mean while as I wait for my Whites to come. My price range is $200-300.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I do Utilites/Excavation. Steel toe is a must and  I would prefer a vibram sole.

I like the new carhartt boots. Lightweight I would hike all day in them

Go to White's and see if they have some reconditioned boots for sale, if you can do it that way. Why wait for your boots, then spend another $2-300 on top of that.

I have a pair of White's Smoke Jumpers and I think it only took a couple weeks to get mine.

I'd go Redwing for a temp boot.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm gonna give whites a call in the morning and see if I could pick up a pair of refurb boots. Anybody have any experience with Danners quality lately? I've heard it's gone down hill.

Go to the redwing outlet in Bellevue. Comfortable boots in your price range and that have a wide selection.

I believe the Irish setter brand was bought out by red wing. Picked up a pair of their boots this week. Comfortable so far.

I have only worn Danner's Super's Rain's for over 20 years of the same work you are doing. I'm sure there are other manufactures' out there, but my feet really like these.  If you are ever in Portland you can get them cheaper at the outlet. I am just never down there.

I'm on my eighth pair of Timberland Pro Titans. I haven't found anything else even close for what I do. I need a waterproof, safety toe running boot. At the end of about 10 months I've worn through the soles and rubbed the leather through on the toe box. But they're still comfortable. No other boot has lasted this long and been as comfortable to wear for 14 hours every day.

Red Wing, but I think all their boots have their own soles on them.

White's turned my order around pretty darn quick as well, but I think now is about the time when they start getting super busy shipping boots ahead of fire season.  You might want another pair of boots to wear off and on while you break in your White's though, the break-in is a bear but afterwards they'll be the most comfortable and best fitting boots you'll ever put your feet into!!

Not too many manufactures have the extra wide width any more.  Danner was bought out by LaCross who in turn was bought out by  ABC Mart.  They did away with the boots for us with really fat feet.

I can only wear Red Wings now.  Worth the money.  Just wished they still made the Irish Setter hunting boots that I used to buy.  Time to pick another model I guess.

Kuliens in Centralia makes custom made shoes so they could make any size including super wide for you.
They are top of the line but carry a top of the line price. I bought my Caulk shoes there until I retired and have a pair of vibram soled shoes with 6" tops.
They start at around $800 and go up depending on  how you want them customized. I have seen 18 eeee sitting on the counter waiting to be picked up so I'm sure your fat feet would be no problem.

Whites quality has gone to hell, I'll not give them another dime until they start building boots as good as they used to. I've only got 6 months on my Nicks I hope they are better than the current offerings from whites.

I've bought a few pairs of Red Wings there, but never in the clearance side. There's always nothing good for me in there. I always end up on the full retail side. Love the boots and the service is always great.

I ended up going with the Danner super rains. It sound like its going to be a good wait with fire season coming up.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I have both white smokejumpers and nick hotshots.  Hotshots are much higher quality imo.  The whites will need a rebuild this coming winter after 2 years. I got the nicks for $50.

although it has been a few years, my white's stood up way better than nick's. the nick's had to be rebuilt twice in as many years and then didn't fit afterwards. talked to "the Man" himself and told him about the story I got from the guys in his store about glue getting frozen and that's why my boots came apart, etc. and he basically said that never happened. called me a liar I guess.
plus that crap they sell for grease is junk, better luck rubbing a candle on your boots.

To early to tell on my Nicks but my last pair of Whites needed a full rebuild after less than 2 years. After the rebuild the eye hooks kept pulling out, I returned them twice to be fixed the second time they charged me $15 to sew a scrap piece of leather over the holes and "repair" the two missing hooks but did nothing for the other hooks that were ready to come out in another good lacing or two. I've never had a pair of Whites that I thought took any break in time while my Nicks were clearly made of sturdier leather than any other brand of boot I've tried. Time will certainly tell, if my Nicks end up being junk I won't try them again but so far they are more impressive than Whites.

I had a pair of Redwing Logger type boots with the Vibram sole. I was kicking the dirt off of them one day on my fuel tank steps and tore the soul off all the way to the heel darn near. I had those boots for 10 years. I called the store and they sent them back to Redwing and they replaced both souls on the boots at no charge for anything......
