Title: Lease Or rent a bird dog?
Post by: Savage.06Shot on April 28, 2014, 07:23:24 PM: Is anyone willing to rent or lease there bird dog for a weekend or two? Really want to go bird hunting but dont have a bird dog yet.

Post by: Mfowl on April 28, 2014, 07:38:41 PM: Many hunting preserves (pay to play) operations have bird dogs on site. Not sure if they "rent" them or send a handler out with you while you hunt but it could be what your looking for. I haven't been to one of those operations for many years so I can't recommend one for you. Maybe Redd's in Ellensburg?

Sorry, everyone I know would not let our hunting buddies/dogs go without us, they are family.

Most dogs too need to bond with a person, at a minimum it would take more then a couple of weekend hunts for you to learn how to handle a particular dog. Every dog and hunt is different.

You, might try to explain what kind of hunt your going on and see if anyone with a dog that meets your hunting style/situation will join you. You might even get someone with a breed you haven't been exposed to help you decide on what you want in a bird dog before you get your dog.

Maybe the time he wolfed down a bunch of the fish based fertilizer and I woke at 5AM to the foul stench of diarrhea all through out the house.
Maybe when he chewed up x, y, or z expensive items.........

But just like my kids, who've had their moments that try the best of us, I wouldn't think of getting rid of my dog. He's family.

Best bet is to befriend someone who has a dog. I had a great outing with one of the members I met here and loved watching him walk in behind my dog on point. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

We always hunted together and he knew her and her skills in the field as much as I did. No way would I rent my dog to anyone I didn't know. I think your three options are either go with someone with a dog, go with an outfitter, or find a place to hunt that doesn't need a dog.

I learned a lot about the birds trying to find them without a dog. After hunting with Bracer40 last year I just finally had to break down and got a dog because his dog did so well at finding the birds again and again. I was a good thing neither one of us were shooting good that day otherwise the fun would have been over sooner. I waited for years to get a hunting because I couldn't get out enough to be fair to it nor did I have the time to train one. So I saved up my money until I had enough time to go go hunting on weekends and bought a started dog. I can't wait until she gets here. You can be successful without a dog though so don't let that stop you.

There are plenty of places close to Selah where you can go for an armed hike with your shotgun and hope to shoot some chukars.

Getting in to bird hunting can be a little difficult, yes. But, there are many of us, myself included, who hunted for many years without a dog. It's not nearly as productive and you get a lot of exercise. Your other option is to get a lab pup and learn the sport together.

For example of there is a lab club in the area, get invited to training and talk to them and watch their dogs and do the same with any flushing dog and pointing dog groups that might be in you area. It might get you 'in' with some people who might invite you to hunt with them once they get to know you.

Cooke Canyon Hunt Club by E'burg has a good reputation. I've never hunted there myself but heard good things. I bet they'd put you with a guide and dog for an afternoon if you wanted to shoot some birds and see what Upland is all about.

But in season I would say Doug at Cooke canyon is your guy and they do run guided with some very good dogs
