Title: Shrimp!
Post by: Mfowl on April 28, 2014, 09:00:32 PM
Who's jacked up to haul some pots? It seems like the season snuck up this year! I still need to dust off the gear and run my puller motor. I can't wait for Saturday! Good Luck!

Headed to Brinnon Friday. I'm in the same boat. I have an 1800' coil of leaded line I need to cut down for my pots. Fire up the puller, and mount it on the boat. Get last years bait out to thaw and make more. Get fresh gas. Maybe tonight! Nothing like waiting for the last minute. :dunno:

What all is needed... Pots obviously, some weighted rope? Boeys? Tell me tell me.

Pots, 300 to 400 feet o line for each pot, bait and bait boxes, yellow bouy's and a puller.

You dont need weighted rope if you use clip on weights as you send it down.

If your going to pull by hand good luck! Its hard as hell and you will lose shrimp if you dont keep it moving at a good constant pull.

It's still worth going if you don't have a puller, but you will want one for next year. Wildman is right though it's not a lot of fun, but can be done.

If you have sturdy pots, you can use an anchor retrieval ball to haul the pots up.  You can make a retrieval system easy enough.  It might be more trouble than worth if shrimping a place like Hood Canal....bumper boats.

Yeah that would not work in most places I've shrimped, I could see a wreck happening and a mess of tangled lines.

I have seen small skiffs pull the line over gunnels of the larger boat. Just gotta time your pot surfacing. Lol Was a hoot to watch and worked great!

Worst conditions ive seen at Brinnon.  Waves were terrible. Decided I wasn't even  going to launch. Saw 1 boat swamped at the launch. Several  others just left. Finally about 10 we went to Whitney point. The launch was very calm. Went out and dropped pots in fairly rough conditions. Waited till 11:15 and pulled pots in scary conditions. But ended up with 5 limits in those 4 pots. Then went to Dosie and got limits of steamers and oysters for us and the grandkids. Made a not so good day a fantastic day. Just felt bad the little ones couldn't get out for shrimp.

We ended up 20 shy of 4 limits. Fishing started out good then took a dive at about 12:30 and we couldn't scratch out that last limit. We had a hitchhiker on one of our pots that was looking for a free meal. Pretty cool!

Not good for my first time  :bash: :bash: :bash:

Some dumb A$$ dropped his pots at 6:30 while the rest of us waited :yike: :yike: :yike: Thank god the GW showed up, went boat to boat to find out who it was and wrote them a BIG ticket

Anyways,here is what I learned.

1) my boom was a failure, need to rework a few things on it, then it will be OK at best.

2( takes a team of 3 people to pull a shrimp pot from the massive depths by hand :'(

3) I now understand what people are talking about when they suggest adding MORE buoyancy to the line.

4) If your the fist in the bunch to pull a pot, the GW will be right there to check you out  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Dont know if I will be out on Wed, not unless I can get a team together to help pull pots, but I will defiantly be getting a electric pot puller before next season.
All ready asked the wife and she said "HELL NO", were saving our money for vacation next month  :dunno:

We came home with 19, yes 19 prawns  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Definitely sporty weather out there for the start!  Took us about three hours for eight limits.  Seems our spot gets more and more crowded every year, but the shrimp keep filling up the pots!

Guys, don't forget to put those pinwheels on top of your bouys. No better way to pick out your pot from long distance!

Pinwheel...or pintail.

Today someone had the genius idea of attaching pintail decoys to their buoys.  They definitely stood out!

We did the Hoodsport rodeo today. Flat water and pulled five limits by hand with two sets. That launch is ridiculous when it comes time to take out but oh well it is what it is.

We were out by Pleasant Harbor.  4 limits, one lost pot. I will defiantly be getting a pot puller next year.  We did see dolphins.  Oh and on the ride home saw this (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F05%2F04%2Fuza6arym.jpg&hash=c7c8ce81dc05ab8a3335b1c87209c831aaa9adc3) it's a truck swamped by Hamma Hamma.

Fewer people, great weather, same shrimp.  We finished at 9am with six limits.

We did much better today than Saturday. 4 limits by 11:00. Watched some Dbag in a Boulton Pilothouse style boat dropping his pots at 6:10am. We were dropping our first pot at 7:00 and they were already going to pull their first pot. Pretty lame! I wish LE was there to stick it to them! It was still a great day on the water. We tried for lings but no dice, just a bunch of copper and quillback rockfish.

Almost limited (4 people) today off Lopez with one set, had to get my boy back to school for lunch.     Pulled pots by hand again as my puller that worked Saturday morning did not work Saturday afternoon or today, grrrr.

First time shrimping for a couple of part-time neighbors.

Will be back out Saturday.

Ace Line Hauler  They sent me a new motor last year, which worked well for the season.  I rewired the downrigger plug on the boat with a 30 amp circuit breaker (as it says to do), tested it Saturday when we left the dock and no go when we went to pull our first pot.  It seems to be shorting out inside as I have power at the plug but get 81 ohms of resistance when I hook the ohmeter up to it.   :dunno:   :(

I thought the Ace's were sealed up pretty well, a short inside seems unlikely given their construction but I'd agree that's what the evidence points to.  Is it possible that when a load is applied it causes a surge, or that the body of the puller moves enough to cause a short inside somewhere?
