hey all, i am on the market for a new sight for my bowtech and just wanting to get some opinions. I am looking to spend around $100-120...
Whats your thoughts?
-
I use the black gold rush sight That's in the price range you're looking for.
Pins are strong etc..
The trophy ridge react is a little more $$ but looks cool. Set 20 and 30 yards and the other pins range automatically. (At least that's what they advertise)
-
My favorite bowsight is the one covering up the vitals on a big muledeer :chuckle:
Sure-Loc (pin or slider)
Axcel (smaller housing than Sure-Loc)
Spot Hogg (Hunter or Tommy Hogg)
Those would be the three hunting ones in order for me.
I killed my first animal using a sight when using just map tacks pushed into a big eraser. Killed it pretty dead too! So all the sights out there will work. But, when you want a combination of durability, adjustability and repeatability those three get my highest marks.
-
Thanks for the input guys. I was looking at the hit man 7, and possibly spending a little more on an iq. But I'm going to do a little more research it looks like!

I like radsav's list of sights but not in the same order.
-
Love my new Spott Hogg. Though my old trophy ridge did just fine too. At first I had a hard time adjusting to the tiny 0.010 pin size on my new spott Hogg, but now I love them. At longer ranges I can "aim smaller". My old pins covered up too much of the target, even at 40yds they were too big.

If I were shooting a Hoyt the Sure-Loc slider would drop to the bottom of that list. It is not too tech riser friendly.
-
I recently bought the Spott Hogg Bullet Proof sight. It was about a 100 bucks with shipping. I like it so far and it looks and feels well built.
-
Whats your thoughts?
spend more and get the axcel

Spott Hogg? Its out of your price range which is why I didn't mention it. Its the hunter 7 pin, cameran hanes edition. I dont know which model of trophy ridge I have but I knocked the level out accidentally and lost it.

Axcel armourtech hd?
bingo!!

accent black gold five pin mover one sight will do it all. im not a spot hog fan ive had low light issues with them. the black gold have been get level too nice when you shoot past chitty yards
-
I've used spott hogg for years and have always been mostly happy. The older models had very brittle fibre optics that would break from time to time. This year I bought a Black Gold Ascent 5pin with the wheel of death and a micro pin for my floater pin. This thing is pretty sweet! Bright in low light, dim in the sun, and I have shot my wheel out to 80 so far and it is spot on! No complaints so far but have not taken it into the field yet so we shall see.
-
I've been a Spot Hogg shooter for 10+ years without any complaints. You can't go wrong with one. But since you asked , my favorite sight is the Hogg Father single red .010"

First two years I bow hunted I didn't even have a sight. I had an old Fred Bear Whitetail, xx75's, and some old dull two blade broadheads. Killed a deer and an elk with that setup. I could hit a pie plate every shot at 40's. Good times! (for the record, I do not recommend this setup) :chuckle:

Oh no! Coach has been drinking again :chuckle:
How close to Vancouver, WA are you Buck_Nasty11?
-
Gen 2 sabo from tactical archery systems. A bit over price range, but will add a new element to your game. Eliminates bow torque and super fun to shoot, especially with lighted nocks.
-
:chuckle: sorry rad . auto correct go me !
-
I used to have a hit man 7 on my old bow. Great sight for the price.
-
Spot Hogg SDP, I've shot several different companies sights over the years and I chose this over the Axcel. Both were great sights so I wont knock the Axcel Hd, just made a choice and have nothing to complain about.
-
spott hogg hunter 5 pin .19 pins been goo to me so far.

:yeah:
A little more money but well worth it. I went with the pins that get smaller in diameter as you move down the line. .029 top two pins, .019 next three pins and .010 for the last pins and staggered the colors, green, red, yellow, green, yellow, red, green. Works great for me.

I'm still waiting on a response to this post. Sure looks like a nice unit when I checked it out online.

Depending on the Hunting I own two sights. Black Gold Ascent 3 pin adjustable and the Axcell Armortech 5 pin pro. Don't see changing any time soon.

Probably no response just because of who is asking :chuckle:
Actually the IQ series are an adaptation of my favorite fixed pin sights - Sure-Loc. This is a dang good sight! Nice pins, great adjustment, just the right amount of brightness and tough. The Retina Lock is a nice improvement to Jim Sherman's patented design. For those with the patience to get accustom to it...it works fine. If you decide you don't like the Retina Lock you can always ignore it. Or if you decide you want a dove tail version you can get nearly the same sight with a fantastic dove tail by purchasing a Sure-Loc Leathal Weapon fixed pin. Which is also available with Retina Lock.

No kidding, eh? :chuckle:
I need to check these thing out in person. They sure look nice and I get tired of using allen wrenches for imprecise adjustments.
-
Thank you RadSav. I also received 2 other strong recommendations for this sight from other archers at work. So I picked one up.
A few notes:
It is easy to install.
Coming off a PSE Gemini sight this one is incredibly easy to sight in at 20 yards. I need to get to a range to sight in the remaining pins and the retina lock. With graduation festivities this weekend it will have to wait another week. So far I am content with the purchase. Need finish the sighting in process.
The instructions and video are geared towards people with more experience.
Missing is an explanation on the different mounting positions.
The "tool free locking knobs" are not tool free. I had to use allen wrenches to loosen them up enough to loosen with the knobs.
I couldn't figure out what to do with the Elevation and Windage screws. There are no obvious empty holes for them to go into.
Really wish I had replaced the sight much earlier. It could have saved me so much time futzing around trying to sight in the other one.

Missing is an explanation on the different mounting positions.
If the same as the one I had there are two options that allow two different things. First the two different holes on mine allowed the mounting bracket to be mounted high or low. This basically just centers the sight on the micro adjust bracket regardless as to whether you shoot a high anchor point or a low anchor point. Nice to have, but on mine it didn't add up to much and didn't really matter one way or the other.
The other purpose is to mount the pins close to the riser or further from the riser. Generally speaking the further the distance between your eye and the pin the more consistent you are. However, the further the pin is from the bow the more chance you have of it catching on brush or having it get bumped. So most hunters like it close, most 3-D shooters like it further away. Sometimes one distance is clearer in your vision than the other too. No real right or wrong way. Just personal preference.
The "tool free locking knobs" are not tool free. I had to use allen wrenches to loosen them up enough to loosen with the knobs.
Nothing worse from a visual merchandise standpoint than to have loose parts rattling around in a package. Especially when the suggested sticker price is north of $150.00. So I expect they set the clutch on the assembly drivers a bit on the high side. You shouldn't need them that tight ever again. So once you loosened them they should be tool free from that point forward. If they happen to come loose on their own and rattle easily. Then use an allen key to add a slightly better bite.
I couldn't figure out what to do with the Elevation and Windage screws. There are no obvious empty holes for them to go into.
Those aren't really windage and elevation screws. They are screws for locking the windage and elevation adjustments. So if you hate those little levers on the tool free lock knobs, like I do. You can replace them with these screws and get rid of the rattle bass turds ;) (Look at second picture under "Optional Features" in the instruction manual)
I sure wish this sight had the individual micro adjust pins like the Sure-Loc as I'm not always that fond of dove tail mounts on hunting bows. There are times when I wish we had the option again on the Sure-Loc. But then again the Sure-Loc is twice the price :o

Any sight Spot Hogg makes is well worth the money and a good investment on tough built sight. :twocents:

I was thinking about getting an IQ sight as well. I had never seen the Micro before.

Still looking for my favorite. I have a Trophy Ridge React 5 pin. I figured I would give multi pins a try again. Nope don't like them. Ordered a HHA 5019 single pin. I had a single pin pin my last bow and really liked it. I know HHA has a pretty good rep.

I've never looked at single pin sites. How do they work, quick adjustment to the correct yardage before each shot or what?

you have a tape where your adjuster is. The tape will have your yardages that you sighted in. Adjust to that yardage you want to shoot and away you go. I set mine to 30 of the while hunting. Anything under that will be pretty close. You can get some adjustable with 3pins.

I wonder if the extra step of making the adjustment in the heat of the moment has made people miss their opportunity? I suppose if it doesn't look like you have the time for the adjustment you can skip it and make the necessary adjustment in your mind for the shot though.

Exactly! You need to practice it, but that's the concept. I usually have mine set for 30 yards when still hunting. I've taken turkey out to 45 yards and both elk and deer out to 50 yards with it set at 30. Aim 2.5" low at 20. When you have the time. Which you usually do at longer distances or wanting to shoot the head off a grouse they are pretty quick to adjust.
Wife and I also have three pin sliders. Possibly the best of both worlds! Unless I'm having a bad target panic day, week or year :chuckle: Then back to the single!

the reason I use single pin is due to trying to focus on one pin when they are close together. Most people do what he stated above.

I'm sticking with my single pin, I have an HHA Optimizer lite. Getting pretty decent at quick adjustments but until I'm actually in the field and on an animal I won't know. I'm stubborn though, and so far refuse to switch out for a fixed 5 pin sight. I'm having fun with it :) and even though I realize in the field there will be instances of estimating, I like that you can get exactly in on the range to. 5 pin sights are in groups of 10 yards usually so you're guessing at 5 yard intervals, you can set the single pin on dang near whatever you want. 47 yards, sure, 32, okay. :chuckle:

I just got the hoggfather micro and I hate it. Too heavy, the weight of it make my bow unbalanced, if I adjust windage even one click it moves my arrow up or down, the cost is three times the other light weight single pins. I really regret buying this and have now chance at selling it cause I'm a lefty. :'(

I think we all knew DIY was not quite right in the head. Now we know...LEFTY!
When I was in first grade my teacher called the left handed kids "Children of the Devil". My brother and my wife switched from L to R because of teachers with the same view. Maybe they were on to something :dunno: :chuckle:

no I mis-spoke. Im not a lefty just left eye dominate. so I shoot left handed. Thanks Rad! :hello: :chuckle:

Teacher was probably German. Krauts HATE left-handers. We shoot Anschutz and Feinwerkbau rifles in our program, and finding left handed stuff from German companies is nearly impossible. Eariler this year I tried to order a left handed Anschutz smallbore rifle for a kid that I have who was being looked at by the Air Force Academy and Wespoint for their rifle teams. I ordered the rifle in October. They told me it was on back order. Called me 2 weeks ago and told me that the rifle was in and asked where I wanted it shipped. I told them to cancel the order, Allie leaves for the Air Force Academy in less than a month... :bash:

I haven't got to four digits of arrows through my React yet, but so far I'm really happy with it. I sighted in at 20 and 30 and it was on at 40, 50, and elevation-wise at 60. I was wide left-right at the 60 yard range, but that's my problem. It did what it was supposed to do as near as I can tell.
-
My Black Gold Rush wasn't terribly expensive and I like it. The pins are bright and target acquisition is fast. My Radical peep helps to.
-
I have to say my rad peep is awesome!

Any opinions on IQ Micro Bowsight (http://www.iqbowsights.com/pages/products/5-pin-bowsight.php)?
I just recently got the IQ retina lock sight and like it somewhat. I think I like the spott hawg sights better because of the smaller pin diameter. but the IQ sight is good but you can get a much better sight for the money. I found it impossible to sight in the actual "Retina lock" it keeps moving!

Trophy Ridge React 5 pin work really well for me

The IQ works great for me. It does what they claim.
