Title: Faulty Remington factory loads.
Post by: MountainWalk on November 29, 2008, 02:14:49 AM: Was in MT shooting my rifle for my ID elk hunt. Was messing around with different ammo and the gun was a straight shooter with most any load you fed it. After finishing off a box of Hornady Heavy mag stuff, I cleaned the bore, set up a new target and tried some Remington plain jane core loct 250's. Was I in for a suprise.

A gun that was shooting super groups was now slinging 8inch groups with fliers all over. Upon closer inspection, I found that nearly every one of them was bad. The bullets, you could pull them out easily an 1/8th of an inch, and none of them were seated uniformly. Madness!
Went to Bob Ward's, bought a box of Remington premium Core Lockt Ultra's, took em home, took em out, and lo and behold! they too were loose as a goose! Talked to my boss, and he had the same problem with Remington ammo for his 300 ultra, and his brother did also with 7mm mag A-Frame Remington ammo. We called the folks at Big Green, and the lady said they had had several complaints about the 338 ammo, but not 300 or 7. Don't think I'll be buying any Remington ammo for awhile. Anyone else have the same problems?

Post by: jeepasaurusrex on November 29, 2008, 08:20:58 AM: I had the same issue with bad grouping and fliers with some core lok-t ammo. I burned the up for brass to reload. I have had much better luck with Federal ammo.

Post by: jdb on November 29, 2008, 01:30:11 PM: my dad had to bad boxes last year one box of 7mm mag that some rounds wont chamber and he also had trouble with a box of 30-06 that almost cost him his best buck ever. but I dont recall the problem. its sad as thats all we have really ever shot. I guess federal will be getting our business now. JB

Post by: MountainWalk on November 29, 2008, 05:35:16 PM: Tried the Fed's, and while not lackluster, not as good as some of the others out of my rifle. Seems like every 338 I've owned has loved Hornady's. I like the Interlock bullet. But I did try some Winchester Accubonds and I liked them alot. Great accuracy. I ended up hunting with my prized last few Winchester 230 GRAIN Fail Safes.

I'm pretty much going to stay with the Hornady's. They are a reasonable price, a good bullet, and they shoot well out of my guns.

Post by: C-Money on December 11, 2008, 09:16:51 AM: I never had a problem with the Remington ammo. Guess I only use the 150 cor lock with the 30-30 now. I reload for all my other guns just cause I know exactly what is going into them, and how they are made. I always thought Rem ammo was fine. I will check my 30-30 ammo! If I had to pick one ammo brand, it would be Federal classic's. They always seemed to group well in my 270, and 30-06.

When I did, I bought it cheap for sighting in and using the brass for reloads.
I was pretty surprised how well it grouped.
Sorry to hear the crimps are weak.
I'm sure they'll make good to you but what about the rest of the lot that doesn't know?
BTW,
After cleaning a bore, a few 'seasoning shots' are usually required to get it shooting again.
That doesn't mean your ammo isn't jacked....I'm just sayin...

Post by: GEARHEAD on December 11, 2008, 02:48:23 PM: HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH A BOX OF 300WSM CORE LOCKS. ONE FAILED, TWO WOULD NOT LOAD. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH. they were just for breaking in the new gun anyways, and getting on target. huge groups, just the same. too bad ya can't return them.

Post by: CP on December 11, 2008, 03:00:33 PM: I’ve used Remington ammo for decades and have taken many deer with inexpensive core lokts. I don’t remember ever having a bad round.

But quality escapes happen in every product. If you contact Remington I’m sure they will exchange the bad ammo for good rounds.

Post by: whacker1 on December 11, 2008, 03:46:27 PM: On another forum folks complained about Remington Brass issues, so before I ordered Brass for my 300 Ultra, I called Cabelas. Cabelas reloading specialist said that they have had many more returns in the last 18 -24 months than they have in prior years. It appears that something is going on in all Calibers relating to the Shoulders and Neck of the Brass. After some discussion, I decided to order Nosler Brass for reloading. Hopefully I will get more life out of the brass as well as more consistency through the quality of the brass. It is also 75% more expensive - imagine that - paying for quality.

I don't have any facts, but there was definitely a trend that Cabelas was in tune with.

I mailed the cartridge to Federal and received two boxes.

The other 1,107 GM308M rounds have sailed true this year.
