Was wondering how the deer hunting was shaping up.Planning on going over this coming weekend. Can't find a decent blacktail to shoot at,seems all my honey holes have turned into housing developments.

There will be some traffic and the deer are mostly pushed off the road. You will need to park and do some hunting to get into the spots where the deer are. Good luck

Frickn' ZOO!!! In over twenty years of hunting the late Swakane archery hunt I have never seen so many archers during this season. Appears to me it's quadrupled in the last four to five years. Quite a few fast driving, non-smiling types out too. Though, I've spoken with a few decent folks!
Get off the road and work for 'em.

Just got home from there today, a fair amount of people but not to bad. I mostly hunted up off of moe ridge and the backside up past the three way Y in the road. did a ton of hiking and walking around and found nothing. There is no snow in the area what so ever which Im thinking has a lot to do with it...but the trees are all marked from the deer...or maybe Im just a retard, thats been known to happen as well...found a shed from a 4 point...highlight of my Swakane hunt..shoot me a message if theres anything else I can help you with.

Just got home too. Saw a 4 pt right in the morning with 5 does and then kicked a few out in the afternoon. The fog rolled in thick down lower and most of the deer were pushed between the roads in the trees right above the fog bank... what a zoo, there were a ton of trucks driving the roads up high. Lots of the roads were very hairy to drive on after they thawed out in the late morning,, be careful out there. PM for more info ;)

Hunted the first weekend, and Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Deer scattered throughout, no concentrations; in 5 days hard hunting, I saw less than 40 deer total, 5-6 legal bucks, no big bucks. The roads are crowded, as described above; I decided to not road hunt today based on all the idiotic drivers I saw, and the legs are toast. No snow at all, and none in the forecast. Drop or gain 1000' elevation and the boot tracks thin out big-time - I only ran into one other hunter in the field under those conditions. It's a bit disheartening when the chukars are still scattered in the open areas up to 5,000'! Wish we'd get some snow, once the trucks can't access the high ridges it gets a whole lot more civilized out there.
Still, hard hunting beats not hunting. I'll be making my last attempt for venison next weekend, otherwise I am going to run out of game meat for the first time since 1989!

My brother and I went on Friday and there was a few people, but not what I'd call a zoo... but then this was my first time there. The first spot we stopped had several piles of poo, some tracks and a skeleton (spine, ribs, tailbone- no head and of course no legs). We didn't feel like climbing the nearly vertical hills so we got back in the truck and mosey'd. The second spot had some tracks leading away from the stream but we didn't see anything in the time we were there- except for some RVs and a bunch of tents with smokestacks...
edit to add: I'm not sure the bird hunters were a big help... last I checked "shotgun" wasn't an effective deer call :)

Slider missed a mid 170 4x4 with 4 inch eye guards opening day!!! :bash: Well I should have said grazed in stead of missed? See photo? I hit a limb. I saw the same Buck on day three!!! He was at 120 yds and feeding. Slider was trying to figure out the best way to get within range and a Doe and a small 4 point ran up the hill and spooked him!!! He ran in the Timber and I gave chase. That was at daylight. I then walked back to wear he was feeding and across the draw(120 yds)from me (were I was at daylight)were 10 deer. 9 Bucks and a Doe. A 26 inch wide 3x3 with eye guards(a really nice Buck) and a 27 inch 2 point with crab claws. They walked up the ridge and I haven't seen any of them since. :bash: I was at 5300ft today no snow and 52 degrees!!! And now it's like the Big Bucks have crawled back into their holes!!!

I was up opening weekend, and climbed up the steepest stuff I could find to access some canyons that cant be seen fronm the road. Spent most of the day traversing the super steep stuff peeking down into the draws and canyons. Saw some does and 2 bucks....and no people. If you go up where most people wont, you wont see anyone. My buddy missed a 4pt the same day. He was 3-4 miles off the road, and down in a canyon. He said once he got down into the canyon, there were alot of deer. The one he missed was pushing a doe so hard that after he blew out, he came back after 5min looking for his lady. I would normally see 3 times the amount of deer, but I think the weather is keeping them from coming down. I didnt go this weekend, cause I'm hoping this week will bring crappy weather to bring in some more deer. Good luck to those who are gonna try it one last time. I'll be back at it Sun and Mon.

Rut was over where I was doing photography. The big boys were already bachelor grouped up. I was amazed how fast that happened.
