Title: Monroe
Post by: X-Force on May 30, 2014, 10:41:31 PM
I have never hunted the unit but tonight I tagged along with my dad. We had a total lack of sign except at 2 unmarked bear baits. They were loaded with pellets and one had been hanging for quite a while. How can they allow baits to be hanging unmarked within site of the road?

They probably expect hunters to find them and know to steer clear from that area. Or they just don't care. I've found numerous bait sights on private timber land within sight of the road and also using a pellet type bait. Supposedly keeps them from the trees. Easier to maintain and keep loaded close to the road. You'd think they would give a map with the bait stations on it to ensure hunters aren't taking advantage of them and breaking the law.  :dunno:

that's what I was expecting. The pellets must work because there was minimal damage in those areas.

I had the tag a couple of years ago and I saw the bait sites. Like has been said, the timber Co's can do that. I never saw any bears or even much sign around the barrels. Time is running out so stay at it. If your dad wants some advice or help, just PM me.

the other thing I found goofy was that all the gates we stopped at were either locked or missing the code lock.

Timber company most likely ..They have them up here too ..what really jerks me is that if they want to kill the bears then these spring bear tags should be anything goes ...Bait -hounds or anyway you can get them ..I have spent some time out with friends this year and I can not believe how much damage as been done in the last week ..At 1st we would see little sign and then all the sudden every road you drive up has been destroyed ...When they are giving out 25 tags and only killing 3 to 4 bears someone is not doing the math to well ...Should be at least 10 killed out of that 25 you would think ..

I've been out with a tag holder a few times. Just in the time I was out this season we found one lock cut off and one gate locked by the guys logging.

When I had the tag 2 years ago my key only worked in about half the gates in the area. I agree that they aren't managing the spring hunts very well. If they really want the bear numbers reduced then they need to give us access to all the gated roads except where they are actively logging. They should also allow baiting in the spring.
