Title: good story for you guys today!
Post by: nachesboy72 on May 31, 2014, 01:12:28 PM
Well I was going out to set up my can in a spot I was wanting to try last year and finally got around to it today. Anyway as I was walking up to my spot across the draw I notice a 20x20 area or so that just didn't look the same there was no grass just dirt! So I told my self ill check that out on my way back! I got my can set up and how I wanted it and was on my way out and back to the truck... I got to where I saw all the dirt and I walked up to it and there was a dug out hole under the sage brush.. I instantly knew it was a coyote den. Within about 20 seconds of standing in front of it I hear a nice loud yip from behind me (where I walked ok the other side of the draw going to set up my cam) I turn around and there's a yote about 30 yards behind me giving me the glare, another yip, another and another.. then one from up above me! Then another comes up behind I'm guessing the momma of the cubs that were probably in the den that I walked up on.. so I have 2 coyotes about 30 yards behind me, and one above me out of sight. And its me and my dog, didn't bring the gun and honestly starting to get a little frightened... I walk away from the den towards my truck still about 3/4 of a mile away.. I keep my eyes on the 2 coyotes as I walk away! They followed me the whole way staying about 25 ish yards away and then split up.. the (momma) stayed right behind me the whole time... I'm about 5 mins away from the truck at this point and my dog starts growling just barely but enough for me to hear so I stop and look at her, and she starts trotting at us at this point I'll admitted I was fairly scared so I picked up the closest rock and waited for her to come at us! My dog ran at her as she trotted at us, they stood about 10 feet apart and stared eye to eye for about 30 seconds. My dog diesel let's out the meanest loudest bellow/bark I've ever heard and sprinted right at her! Knocked her on the ground! She was up as quick as she went down but just turned and ran off! Luckily my dog just stayed where he was and barked till she was out of sight! We hightailed it to the truck! I've never heads if this happening to anyone so I thought I would share my story! I always knew the whole coyotes are more scares then we are, but when she's got babies that wasn't true! I was easily more frightened then her! Has this ever happened to any of you guys on here!?

Sorry this has nothing to do with deer! Besides the setting up the can part. Bit This thread usually gets the most posts and replies and I'm really curious if anyone else has ever experienced this!

Not exactly.  I did kick a yote in the face.  I set up a blind with sticks and such by game trail.  A yote came down trail and sniffed my tracks, turned and tracked right into my boots as I was sitting in my blind.  Very creepy. :chuckle:

Holy smokes......this coyote had cubs?!... :chuckle:
Never anything that close, but I've had a group of yotes try and lure my dog off. They will use  one yote as bait while rest of the group flanks the dog.

Yeah it definently scared me! The pups weren't with the mom, but I'm pretty sure they were in the den. Because when i walked up on it she was behind me and about 25 yards and yippin waiting me being there for no more than 10 seconds long enough for me to walk up to it and wonder if there were pups in there or if it was just an old den. If there weren't pups in there I wouldn't expect them to be that close to me. Normally when I see coyotes there usually running away from me by the time I see them.. so there was either pups in there she was guarding, they wanted to get my dog away from me, or they wanted me..

There was a den nearby where I walk the dogs every day.  One year this happened regularly until about the middle of June.  I figured either the pups got old enough to move or someone took care of the problem.  Unfortunately we were within city limits and a couple blocks from the cop shop so no hunting there.  The wife and I did pack shooters just in case it escalated.  I some times wonder if it would have had we had only one dog.

That spot sounds like a great opportunity to get some real cool pictures.  Not sure I would be in a rush to shoot her until I'd made an effort to get some rare pictures.  Unless I worried about other people and small dogs in the neighborhood.

I was shed hunting in Idaho one spring when I came over a little crest. There was 6 pups and the mom yote about 10 yards away. All the pups went down into the den and the mom took off. I should have went back with my 223 but never did.

Honestly I'm not sure if I could shoot the pups. They were about as big as a 4 week old lab. It sure would help out the deer though.

Interesting story.  You'd better send that coyote, and its kin, toward the glowing orb of light above it.   :)  Also, what is the "can" you are setting up?  I'm assuming it was cam-era?

About 20 years ago we were deer hunting in AZ and my uncle sat on a rock outcropping and heard some soft mews. He realized he was sitting on top of a mountain lion den. He used his rifle to push the bushes aside and the lioness came barrelling out and almost knocked him on his a$$.  :yike: It ran around about 75 yards from the den and he was not able to get a clean shot. Glad it wasn't me, I would have died on the spot.

Oh he got plenty of treats, and I actually treated him to his favorite bacon and cheese! He doesn't get out often so I'm hoping that helped show him how appreciative I was!

They were after your dog.  Canines are very territorial, especially with pups in the den.  If it had been just you, you probably wouldn't have seen them but they were gonna make sure your dog left the area. Most likely the only reason the pair didn't kill your dog was because of your presence.

I had a friend a few years back that was trail riding with his horse and dog and they got too close to a den.  The pair of yotes followed them over a mile and it finally ended with a two on one rumble.  His dog ended up with over 150 puncture wounds.  Coyotes play for keeps!  Its life or death in the wild and coyotes kill for a living.  Pack heat and keep an eye on your puppy.  Glad it worked out well though.
