Well I started my scouting yesterday. Dropped a couple trail cams in areas where I have seen big moose in the past and kicked around in some new areas. Met a guy running his hounds for bear and he gave some good info. Saw a small bull moose and some deer. My cousin found a smasher elk dead head 50 yards from the road! Ill try and keep this thread updated.

Stupid phone always rotates pics! :bash: too bad one side is so chewed up...

Spent all day yesterday in the woods driving around and learning the road systems. Didnt see any animals. Found some very heavily used areas with crap and tracks and marks on my gps. Gonna check a couple trail cams next week.

id guess the last pic to be mid 30s wide. Not great paddle width. That seem about right?
I know what to look for hardhorned horned but im lost with how much growth remains.

Tagging and Good Luck!

Made another trip over last weekend. Saw one cow moose and collected my trail cams. Dang bears ripped them al off the trees! Did get a pic of a decent looking bull... looks to be 40+ wide but cant see the fronts in the pic. Almost time! Ill only make it over one more time before hunting it... too busy with elk and deer hunting :chuckle:
-
Good luck. Hope to see some pics. When does the season start?

-
A .375 you say... I like that... :)
Best of luck, Guy
-
Yep a 375 guy! I joined fhe club!
Went and scouted yesterday. Was a great day. Started with seeing 15+ moose early with 2 shooter bulls. Helped some guys load a bull elk into their car small suv (2 door trooper or samaurai). Elk went in whole. Then watched more moose. Went up toa place we call the rock slide clear cut and missed a dandy mule deer buck :bash: complete shooter error... i needed to takea breath amd slow down. Goes to show that the fever can hit even the most seasoned hunters... not just beginners. :chuckle: saw a few more smaller bulls later in the day but no more shooters. Saturday cant get here soon enough!
-
Dang sideways pics!
Heres more

Awesome. I cant wait to hear the rest of the story.

If anyone knows how to rotate my pics feel free to rotate them and repost. I dont know how on my phone. :bash:

We like looking at them sideways. It adds some drama wondering what your looking at :chuckle:

got the truck all loaded up with camp!
one minor problem... there is ZERO room left in the truck! no room to bring a moose and camp back at once.
only an hour so another trip wont be an issue.
I am really hoping to see the bulls from last weekend again!
-
Chris,
Good luck to you buddy!!! Can't wait to see the pictures once you return!!!!

Got to the hunting area yesterday before daylight. Wanted to glass for moose a day before it opened.
Got up there and spotted a few cows and small bulls. Then the one ive been watching came out. We watched him for 1.5 hours till he went in the brush.
Then off to the campground we went to set up camp. Got all of our gear set up in a couple hours. After that we went for firewood amd to check a few areas for open gates. back to camp we went.
-
Congrats Chris nice bull!
-
Great bull, Congrats!!!
-
Here we go with more sideways pics... :chuckle: :bash:
anyways. After we rested at camp a bit my cousin wanted to go up to where i missed the mule deer last week. So at 3 we left camp. Got up there and glassed up a couple moose (small bull) and continued on. We were headed back down the mountain when he spotted a couple does down 100 yards in a rock slide below us. We watched and he spotted a buck in the brush so i got behind my gun rested over a pack and on the buck. He was blocked by a lot of brush so i waited. He disappeared for a minute or so then poked out of the brush exposing his neck and head. I lined the 375 up right under his ear and touched off. Deer flipped over with stiff legs in the air! Bonus buck down! We ran down there and dressed the buck qnd drug it up the rock slide and out hoping to make it to the "moose cut" before dark to watch for the bull. We made it to the cut and saw the cow amd young bull my bull was with but he stayed hidden. No worries though because afternoons havent produced hardly any sightings.
Headed back to camp after dark to hang and skin the buck. The stove in my tent last nigut was a new experience! I filled the tent with smoke numerous times amd never really got the fire going... went to bed cold.
-
Finally a right pic!
Woke up bright and early this am with high hopes. Got the fire going well at 445 and dried out the concldensation in the tent amd warmed us up. Had breakfast and waited for huntnnw to get there. He showed up and we loaded up to head to the moose cut. Followed a few rigs up amd i was very nervous they were moose hunters.
Got to the cut in the dark amd couldnt see 30 feet! Fog!
Parked where we watched the bull from yesterday and waited.... and waited... around 8 the fog cleared and we saw no moose.
Went and checked another spot and came back after 15 minutes and spotted moose half mile down the cut from where we were watching. Saw a cow amd small bull first. Then saw my bull. Told my cousin and shane "theres our boy!"
Got all set up with a good rest for the 260 yard steep downhill shot. Shame got the vid cam up and i started shooting!
First shot shane called a clean miss... :sry: i reloaded amd shot again... shane called a gut shot... i was frazzled by now! The bull turned straight at us. No shot. I waited and asked shane if i should try a spine shot. Shane said "youll hit a paddle!"
Just then he turned down hill and i hit him in the neck. (Gun seems to shoot left... maybe me... maybe the gun. Need to confirm) third shot absolutely tanks this bull and he nosedives!!! BULL DOWN!!!
-
Got down to the bull and took a few pics. Then got to work.
Had the bull to the truck in 4 hours. The three of us made 1 trip. Shane and i got the pieces to a skidder row while erick went amd got the game cart. We each loaded a pack of meat and the cart had cape/head and both front quarters. Headed out. It was almost a mile on the skidder road to the truck. Once we had it out we went back to camp amd broke down the 2 weeks worth of gear at camp after only 1 day. :IBCOOL: and headed for home! Thanks a ton huntnnw! Couldnt have done it without you.
-
Ill post more pics and upload the video in the next few days when i load it all on the computer.
Bull was rough scored at gross 153 ish. Net green would he mid to upper 140s.
Please excuse my typos and horrible spelling. Phones are a pain to post with. :chuckle:

Good work Chris! As an ex-co worker, I almost fell off my chair when I saw your post. Now what OIL tag will you go for next?
-
Congratulations on a great bull!
-
Wow, what a beautiful bull! Well done!
In hindsight, what is your take of having a November hunt versus October? Would you do it the same again? Obviously it worked out well in November!

through out idahos harvest stats the bigget bulls typically get killed in the nov season (they show avg width) and there were plenty of moose to see. the only drawbacks I could see were that the rut was winding down and the weather could be unpredictable.
hindsight I wouldn't change a thing!
-
I green scored my bull yesterday and it was 155 1/2! gross booner! net should be 148-149. I am jacked with that. obviously this may change after drying and im not sure I will ever have it officially scored.
been working on the meat, 70-75 lbs off each hind quarter after processing!
-
Chris, awesome bull brother!!! Glad you were able to get such a dandy...we saw a few bruisers up top this year including one 50+ that was watering in a puddle in front of our camp. Thank you for sharing your experience with us and congrats on such a great bull....
Scott

quick update,
I am about half way through the moose and have already put 185#+ in the freezer! :IBCOOL:
still haven't thought about the deer... why didn't you experienced moose hunters warn me of the meat overload? :chuckle:
my fiancé told me that both these critters have to be processed and out of the garage before I can hunt again... late deer opens Saturday!
its a good thing that my future father in law owns an appliance company, because I need more freezers!
still haven't got the video or more pics uploaded... but I will
-
Congrats.

Looks like there might have been a spur road below as well
there was... but that was gated 1.5 miles down where it meets up with the main road. I shot from the only road that was open to drive. Yes i road hunted :yike: :sry: :chuckle:

For future reference if anyone draws a unit 4 moose tag i will share all the info i learned on my own. Including where my bull was. I was alsos told about a couple spots by other members but will keep those quiet.
