504 actually for the month of November. That doesn't seem like alot really, but I sure thought it was. I either glasses, drooled over, hunted and or photographed that many bucks (98%) of them in the state of Washington for the month of Novemeber 2008. I finished teh month off with a bang yesterday with my daughter Madison. She really did her best spotting bucks for me, and dang if I hadn't had her along would have missed a bunch. Watch for the pics.
-
Madison spotted this guy down over the hill and I was impressed. He didn't exactly stand out. He was even more shadowy than the picture shows. I was glad he stayetd put for a couple of shots. The first three unfortunately were focused on the brush around him. I finally went to manual and got this one. Still not perfect but better than auto.

Wow! Wat to go Madison!!
-
Can she go hunting with me LOL!!! Great eye!! Must run in the family?
-
It gets way better. I was staring throughthe viewfinder at this guy when he stood up and was like what the heck and saw this guy behind him bedded down chewing his cud. I guess he felt pretty safe. Dad really isn't as sharp as the youngster. I got a bunch on this guy, I'll get him featured on here pretty soon in one of my Bones Bucks..... If it wasn't for Madison, i wouldn't have seen either buck. She is a good partner to have around. It gets even BETTER!

glad he decided to get out of his bed so I could see what was behind him.

so after this I was pretty excited. Then we got just a hair lower, back into the fog. I hated it. I so often watch bucks disappear into the fog. This day would be no exception. We were driving along and I was telling a story about a buck I had photographed two different day almost in the same spot. We got to that spot and she says, theres a buck Daddy. I stop and she turns and looks at me with HUGE saucer eyeballs. Its a huge one. I look down the hill and there is a small 4 point. I said you just saw a way bigger one than that. She says NO, Its behind the woodpile. (a slash pile) I said ok and asked her to stay in the truck while I try to slip out and get a pic. I get out and am unfolding the tripod and I look down the hill and there standing looking at me is a 35 inch monster. He turns and starts running away. I "waste" three seconds turning to Madison to tell her to get out and see him before he is gone. I turn back and he is about one leap from being gone. I raise my camera and click a pic without even knowing what was in the view finder...no time. Madison says that isn't him and she whispers he is behind the woodpile. You can imagine what I am thinking in my mind. I turn to the pile and take a couple steps and peer over the top. Of course the camera isn't tall enough. BONES EVERWHERE. Bucks exploded like a covey of quail. I stood there just like a stupified coyote not knowing what to do as a 30 incher, another massive tall rack, which was the one she was talking about, and a couple smaller ones disappear into the fog in every direction. I tried to capture a couple of them on film. It wasn't pretty and the pics I will post will be of typical documentation for you...NOT quality. The fog shots suck. If it wasn't for her spotting that buck, I am not sure what would have happened.
-
Wow that was a great month with some outstanding photos. Thanks
-
so here is the picture of my 35 incher. Who says big lens are better than point and shoot....I bet I c ould have got him on film fir the Pany. At least I got to see him and so did Madison......the saga continues on him in a bit

Remember fog shots SUCK.....in order to see the deer I have done some tweaking. Here is the second smallest making his SLOW departure.

This might be it for the night....but another view of this guy. I guess I think he was a dandy, but he really was small compared to the other three.

-
awsome pics. those are really good.
-
After looking at these pictures for the 2nd time today...i'm going to bed and will be dreaming about what a 35inch buck looks like :'(
-
Well Swift, they are pretty much amazing. Especially one of those that also goes up and not just flares.
-
Nice Bone! Imagine what Madison can spot with some decent Binos.
-
Sounds like you have a couple great partners there bone....To bad the fog was so thick, good to hear that some monsters made it through hunting season. Look forward to more pic's.
-
I knlow Lilly enjoyed the Zen Rays I was trying. Her eye doctor screwed the pooch and diagnosed her at 20-20. I knew she was having trouble seeing so I took her back in and said listen, my kid is not a liar and I am a good customer to you, could you take another look. Bottom line, they said she can see fine. Well thats crap. She can see better with my glasses on than without....long story short, we were out and I was telling her how to spot deer and she pointed and said like those....I said where as she was pointing to a herd of horses in a field. I am like what the heck.....She basically can't see squat. BUT........through my binos, she could see jsut fine, so spent the day looking through binos everywhere we went, including driving down the road. I figured she would get sick, but she was enjoying being able to see so much and spot so much. Now I just need to flog my eye doctor, and take her to a new one.......
-
Sounds like she had a great day with Dad. That's awesome. I hope the new Doc can get her what she needs. She will be able to see a WHOLE NEW WORLD.
-
Well, I took each of them out Daisy just isn't there yet...and they both saw Boone and Crockett animals in the state of Washington. I feel good about that. Thats not something you do every day.
-
sorry guys.....fog just screwed me again.
here is another one of second to smallest

here is one of the smallest 30 incher. He was probably closer to 29 but I gave him the benefit of the doubt because I didn't get to sit and study him. I had no clue he was ONLY a TWO POINT.

-
Man, that is a BRUISER forkey!!!
-
amazing pic's, over 500 bucks in November alone!! How much time did that take, and do you travel all over the state or close to home? Again very nice
-
I put alot of miles on the rig. Yep thats Nov1 to Nov 30. I spent most of the time this month in the woods. I was local for a few days while I was home, and then the rest was up in the Methow and in Colville. Not one deer in the Entiat, and only one spike in the desert. There were a couple in Idaho and Montana, but most were here in washington. Here is anotehr bruiser screwed by the fog. Madison and I tried to get closer but he always kept his distance and the fog just got thicker.

We got below the fog and went to whitetail country. I went to a spot where 7 years in a row I have rattled in a whitetail. I slammed the antlers together and did a round. I stopped then heard a grunt coming from teh direction Madison was watching. NOTHING, I grunted a couple times and waited, still nothing. I turned around and slammed them together again and then Madison said here he comes. I turned and he had us pinned. I let her look for a bit then I raised the camera. He started circling us. Here are a couple snaps of him. It was cool because she got to watch him come in down the shooting lane she was watching.

He's the smallest I have rattled in here, but I'll take him. HER FIRST. I rattled in Idabooners first buck here as well, so there is some fmaily history here.

The whitetail action was pitiful this year. I wonder if the winterkill was harder on them than I thought. I always see some banger whitetails. NONE this year and not alot of does either.

Very Nice!
-
Back to Muley country. We went back to where all the action was hoping things had settled a bit, but nothing, so we moved to anotehr climate. LOWER than the fog. Here are a couple misc ones of a buck.

That is a nice looking buck!

tHANKS jae
I tried my darndest to get this guy filmed the other day in the tall sage. Dang if he wasn't in the same area. This time I was spying from a LONG ways away. I set up the spotter for Madison and we watched 4 bucks that were running together. A week ago they were mortal enemies. Funny how that works over girls. He has a broken main beam.

great pics
-
Wow BONE those pics are amazing. Some good bucks in there man.
-
do you archery hunt, you should guide. If you did I would hire you. I've taken some very nice mule deer but am focusing on a big WT. Biggest WT to date is 120 both in wa and id. wa buck was late archery.
-
Man, I haven't been on this site for too long but I have been VERY, VERY impressed with your photos/photography skills! Simply AWESOME!
Thanks for sharing with everyone!
-
You guys are nice. I could never guide. Just ask the gents I took out. I am a wreck of what happens for that day for them. It drove me nuts. WHat if nothing happens....to many variables. Though I guess I see some deer, it would still freak me out. I have guided my Dad and my wife to successful hunts, though the most satisfying experience in my life, it was also some of the most stressing.
-
I got to show Madison a really cool mental picture of these 4 bucks. I got the spotter on them just as they filed out of the sage single file and had her watching them. It was pretty cool even for the seasoned vet. 4 bucks and two does. No rutting activity, just time to eat.

-
Looks like a muzzle just above and to the left of the first buck. Broadside, looking to the right. :dunno:
-
We then went a long ways before we saw any other bones. We went to the head of a real tough canyon and saw a small one below and she got to watch a coyote for some time. I think I got him on film. I got two for sure, so AWESOME for the contest. Also I didn't know this but she hadn't seen a coyote before. My other girls see them all teh time. Anyhow, we checked out that canyon then came back and was headed to the truck and WTH, how did we pass this guy.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fmile.jpg&hash=68eed425d986ec4ea3fd8bb9580e7b296235b210)

SURE alot of broken racks this year. GEEZ
-
So we tried a stalk and I got to see him go over the sky line. DANG IT. We headed back to the truck and I said, you know what, we can probably cut him off in the next canyon and see him. Off we went, light fading, time to get Mad back to her mom approaching..... We rounded the hill and.....

CRAP. focuson the bucks not the hill behind them.....

Hehe, that doesn't sound particularly safe! I went through the Yak canyon a couple times last weekend...had the wife drive so we didn't wind up in the river.
Awesome pics Bone! I replied first then went back and read the full thread. Just awesome that you're finding that many bucks (and quality bucks) out there. All the better that you've got your kid (and camera) along for the ride!

Man!!!! These are great Bone. You see some nice animals in all of your travels. Thanks for sharing. That pic of the huge 2pt makes you wonder how he's made it through with all the trigger happy guys.

amazing!
i drove the north cascades loop last weekend and saw 100+ deer from Mazama through Twisp. It was my first time over there and i now understand why everyone loves it up there! I've never seen so many deer and so many bucks and that was all just off the highway!
-
Believe it or not Zack, its usually about 10 times better. Thats all the deer from all those mountains that have come down. There can literally be thousands if you know where to go. This is a tough year, but maybe they will ahve a slack winter and easy spring and they will rebuild and so will the range.
-
Well done. I didn't want to interrupt the flow but those are some great shots. Thank you for sharing. My dad left yesterday for a late season hunt and I am sitting in corporate housing in the nation's capital wishing I was out walking the hills with my bow in my hand.
-
Thanks for all the pics. Much like a "littlefoot", you must be his cousin bigfoot from other decriptions of you on this site? Nice of you to share all the cool things you get to see and very good job on involving the kids.
Thanks!!!
Mike

THANK YOU, If I was in the nations capitol I would want to be anywhere else. :chuckle:

I am going to feature this guy in his own thread I think. Not that he is that big of a buck, but he was special to me. I tried my dangdest to get him on film last year but all I got was blurry pics of him. Well, he was acting the same way this year. He shrunk quite a bit from last year, but he was up to his same old ways, about 200 yards from where I chased him last year. IN THE THICK STUFF.

speaking of deer in the past.........I didn't see this guy this year. I ahve followed him for about 5 years. I figured last year would be his last. Lilly and I saw him last year and he was way regressed from this pic. He could hardly walk he was so stove up.

I rattled this guy in and saw him three years in a row. NOT THIS YEAR. :(
Not to play the whole wolf theory thing, but I found a shed buck that was killed by them last year right where this guy lived, so very well could have been him. Same size class. You have seen the pic, but one more time for memory lane for the new guys on here.

BONE!!!!!!!!!! Dont pollute the mulies with a whitetail....... :chuckle: Although he is a very nice buck. To bad he may have been pulled down by wolve. JK on the pollution remark, I love to see all your pictures you put alot of time and effort to share them with all of us. Keep them coming, its alooooooooooooong time till next fall.
Sage
-
nice pics!!! I love to see those mullies!!!!!!
-
:chuckle: Not much to worry about there Sage. I saw so few whitetail bucks this year. I think they got some disappearing virus or something. Not even that much sign. Maybe its good and the Muleys can regain a foothold. I don't know. You'd have thought I would have found skulls laying everywhere out there but I didn't in whitetail country. :dunno: I am pretty sure its not poaching pressure as they don't tend to succomb to that like the muleys do. I was going to feaute this buck but I just didn't get that many different pics of him. He was steadfast in where he wanted to be in the thick stuff. He was a true fart last year, I'll see if I can find that pic. he had a doe and he didn't wnat to leave her because he had a pesky friend nearby. I know this buck is older, but he just doesn't look that impressive.

This whole photoop I was proud of myself. Patted myself on the back even. Last time I had all the trees in focus instead of him. this was an impossible mission for autofocus. We were on the dark side of the mountain and I was trying to see him to do manual focus on him. I am pretty sure this was evening. I don't have my time or date set on my camera compliments of my little photo friend playing with it. Anyhow here is one of his buddy. I think he is in focus and not the dozen trees around him.

I doubt he will make it another year. Man that was a smart deer. I was damn happy to see him again and damn proud of getting him on film. As far as I know he never leaves the dark timber. If I find his skull in the spring I'll get some good shots of it. This is the type of animal that I hold up as the ultimate trophy, ESPECIALLY in this state.

Thanks guys! I've ahd people tell me that, but I have no clue. I jsut like taking pics. I'm glad you all enjoy them.

Would you stop posting all your pics, you need to save some for the cold winter thats coming. If you feel like getting out for more you know where I will be this weekend ;)

I'd sure like too.

Alright, back to this guy. He was being a real pain, sticking to the brush. Again, I think this was about a 3.5 year old buck and in about 2 years will be simply amazing I bet.

I do think I have this one one film again this year. I haven't done the side by side comparison yet, but he def has similiar characteristics. Here he was last year. Hopefully I'll get a chance soon to get this group on here. It was actually another fun story where I just happen to be at the right place at the right time.

So you have seen this buck on here elsewhere. I had stalked him and got some good shots then went to look for some more animals. Well this guy left his doe and went on a walkabout, and I happened to end up between him and where he was going. I snapped a couple more pics of him and then moved along.

I looked down below him and he had a little buddy. His little buddy was on the tail of a doe. They went below me in what I thought was pretty wide open country. Things were about to get interesting though.

Bone,
I am sure you have been asked before, but what equipment are you using? I am looking to get a dslr in the coming months, and I have narrowed it down to either a cannon or nikon. One lens any better than another? auto focus or manual? For shooting wildlife, what is the minimum lens you recommend?
Any help would be appreciated.
-
I turned around and there was this little guy. I was officially in the land of the little deer now.

I'll get back to you in a minute huntbear, I've got a bit of work to take care of....
-
More awesome photos.
-
So COOL!~!
-
Thanks again guys.
Huntbear. I have been doing this awhile and I have found that the 400mm is just about the best lens for wildlife, especially when shooting non park animals. 99% of what I shoot are hunted critters so you have to reach out there sometimes. One of the Canon 300mm lens is also awesome and would like to have one of those too for fast action. Anyway, its really up to what camera fits your hand and liking better in regards to Nikon versus Canon. I have always shot Canon, but the Nikon cameras are also awesome. I like Canon glass. You kind of limit yourself if shooting a Prime or fixed lens the 400 versus the variable zoom, but I think you get better pics with the Prime lens. There are alot better and more experienced pros on here. Pope was a great one to ask. He is/was a wealth of knowledge. I shoot the Canon 40D and its a great camera. THere is already one or two newer ones out. The older ones also shoot great. You can pick up a 20 or 30 D for a very reasonable price. The sky is the limit on lenses. If you can't get Canon glass, then there is always Sigma and Tamron which are fairly decent in a more moderate price range. Light is the biggest deal. The more money you can spend on glass the better off you are.
-
Thanks for the info, I will keep doing my research, and ask Pope his advice. I am constantly looking at Ebay and Craigslist for deals. To me both the cannon and nikon fit me. I have held them all it seems like. To start out I will have to go with the cheaper glass. Just due to money constraints. However, I will leave myself room for upgrading as it is permitted by the wife. lol.
-
I understand. I have taken deer pics since I was about 14 I would guess. I have used alot of different glass and most of it up until this year has been some of the cheapest most available on the market.
-
so I have snapper down the hill and two others in front of me and I spot another and out walks this guy. My first impression was this was the one I started all this off with. I figured he smelled a hot doe and came in for the little lady. Notice his stance and his hackles. He was not happy at the other buck that was with the doe. He ran him off....
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fbeg8.jpg&hash=c40d29b67cf8bde981453f457142d7c057951633)

-
I just about can't keep track now. I have at least 4 branch antlered bucks in front of me along with three pisscutters and one pisscutter down below me with a doe. I turn around and what the heck, now there is a pisscutter below with about 12 does. Where did they come from. I turned back around and was trying to get the one bigger buck on film. Some time passed and I turned around and what the heck, now there is a pisscutter, 12 muley does and a partridge in a ...I mean two whitetail does standing there. Where did they come from. I turn back around and get back to trying to capture this guy as he chases his doe around the big sage. Meanwhile, a couple of the smaller bucks decide to head down the hill to where all the other does are. I hear something and turn around and this guy is standing behind me. Where in teh heck did he come from. Well that shakes things up a bit down there.
-
This is full frame by the way. No cropping I have no idea where he came from, but he about spooked me when I turned around and he was standing behind me.
I practically have to check my scorecard now to see how many bucks I have within 100 yards of me, let alone bow range.

this was the guy that started this whole thing back from last year. This was about 200 yards from where the pics were taken last year of this buck. I am pretty sure they are the same deer. Interesting genetics. i think you can find him under search... peculiar fellow I think thats what it was anyway. I hope I have more pics of him but haven't got that far yet.

-
Unique looking buck for sure
-
it sure amazes me the amount of legal bucks that pop up during the winter. but yet during the hunting season there was alot of guys who never seen a legal deer let alone a buck.
nice pics btw, it must be nice to get out and just watch all these bucks. im jealous

Wow well thats incredible you got some great looks at deer. . .. nice to see em come down for rut and winter and see the hopefuls for next season
-
I need to get out in your neck of the woods. There are a couple pockets I'd like to check out.
-
I know there isnt enough time off in the year for me to go check out all the places I would like to look for deer. . . .so many deer so little time lol
-
WOW, what do you say about so many nice deer. So much character is a lot of those animals. I would like to see the biggest buck you have ever taken a pic of in Washington. Is this what you do for a living, I'm assuming you are a photographer? Doesn't look like you should have a hard time finding a deer in the hunting season. :chuckle:
-
nope just a hobby, or is that an addiction. It really doesn't do the justice of all the big bucks I have seen that I didn't get on film, even with camera in hand. They don't get big by being dumb in this state. All the deer I take pics of are hunted animals, NO PARK animals, so most of the big ones escape. Its alot harder to take a picture let alone a good picture of a big buck than shoot one. Thats part of why I do this. I love the challenge. The new lens this year was to help bridge the gap withthe dawn and dusk thing I e-mailed you about. Alot of times they are very nocturnal and there just isn't the light to get them on film. This state actaully has animals that will rival any other for the most part. Not near the quantity, but there are some real monsters hanging around as evidenced with some of the big ones showing up and shed antlers.
-
Yeah I agree its really tough to get a decent picture of a big deer. . all the big ones I have seen have been in tough enough areas that the only way to get em was to shoot em and they seem to hide better when hunters hit the hills imagine that.
-
EVERY year the biggest gets away. This year was no exception
-
Yeah keeps it interesting. . . if the deer were in parks or fenced in or fed then it would ruin the fun. I am the type of guy I would never pay to harvest a animal that was raised or fenced. DIY is the only way for me.
-
great pics.thanks for sharing. good to hear they are not from parks
-
Are you out hiking most of the time or are you covering ground from a heated blind when you are looking for animals this time of year?
-
First time I looked through this thread. Simply incredible!
-
Thanks Moose. I've still got a batch of pics to put on this thread. A guy needs more time. Teacherman I do whatever it takes to get where I've got to go. Thats from show leather to long miles on the rig. Today it was crosscountry skis. Alot of times its snowshoes or snowmobile or both, but this snow sucks for that.
-
Bone, In your opinion what is the overall shape of the herd/deer that you are seeing since the extreme cold temps set in? Are they looking ok? Just wondering.
-
Methow herd, Yakima herd and I suspect the Entiat herd are in great shape. Animals are robust and range is good, and conditions are mild. Problem is we have wet or warm weather coming in. Once it ices or crusts or worse yet, rain then cold, the animals will start to suffer. I haven't been up to the Colville or around spokane but suspect their deep snows aren't helping them much.
-
We saw loads of them today and they all looked very healthy and active. The snow was dry and powdery and easily moved to access food.
-
ya i saw a small double mainbeam 3 point today with some does and they looked great. Snow ia the same as you described.
-
yep agreed seeing lots of deer around here in the regular spots. . . one spot didnt seem to hold nothing usually its got only one buck in there with a couple doe small area so maybe if the buck got killed the doe split for better breeding grounds early. .. same snow conditions 14 16 inches to 24 inches and light and powdry
-
It rained all morning North of Spokane. We went from around 35" of snow to about 20" today. The problem is my almost 3 year old daughter can run across the top of what is left it packed down so hard from the rain. Then just after dark it dropped below freezing tonight. Doesn't look good. Predator heaven. :bash:
-
man that rips! . . .we had a warm day here and i went out it still soft in places but after it freezes tonight its going to miserable snow from now till mid february oh well good luck deer they still looked good playing and fighting and one buck was chasing a late doe looked to me like
-

I got some "great" shots of him on the water, but the water WAY overexposed them. Even in RAW
-
To think back when it looked like that outside I wanted it to snow. I really dont like the snow anymore :'( :chuckle:
-
Simply incredible Bone the color and the bucks are way way cool! how close do you get? I mean obviously you got a great lens but I am just a beginner I cant gauge distance
-
Thanks. I get pretty close sometimes Wilson. The closer the better. I think I was within about 30 yards of this last guy. My lens really isn't that big of a zoom. What it does do is allow light more when there isn't any. Its only a 400mm
-
I know I know, Since they banned laptops at work, my picture posting days have been cut. Ive got at least two more good bucks to show you from this fall.

You are right! Very nice!!! :)
-
One more year and he'll be a dandy
-
hes got some nice forks........
-
Very cool Doug, looks like he has a couple little extra brow stickers.
-
I didn't notice that while I was shooting him. I was just happy to have hime standing there with Madison at my side. I got some good frames of him and then he finally got nervous of us and left. I noticed the stickers when I started doing the photos up. He'll be a damn fine buck this next year. I'm wondering what those stickers will do.
-
Great looking buck bone...Hope I run into something like that this next year. He looks fairly young too, definitely got some potential.
-
boneaddict...a curious question: out of 500 bucks how many of them do you think you photographed?
-
Simply unbelievable! I have to be honest... he would have been a shooter this year for me! It would have taken great restraint to pass him up.
-
OK Bone, for one thing, I am going to stop complaining that there are "no big muleys left", and I am going to start looking harder. Lots of bucks on this thread that are going to be bruisers next year.
This did seem to be a particularly good year for spotting good deer after the season. Either that or I am getting better at it. When we got that big snowstorm I was able to spot 2 good muleys in areas I have never seen them in before. The snow must have pushed them down. I also spotted a muley that probably went about 170. I think he was a deer that I saw about this time last year, but haven't seen him since. He is young, but real healthy. Not much mass, but very tall and about 27 wide. Private property though. Probably die of old age.
Another thing, I am going to start carrying a camera. I already carry binos and a spotting scope in my work rig, one more thing on the dashboard won't take up too much room.
LOVED the pics in this thread. THere is nothing in the world like having your kid reach a level where they start spotting game on their own. You know they are becoming a hunter. A predator. That's the difference between hikers and hunters. Hikers observe the environment. Hunters are part of it.
thanx for sharing...
-
Thanks guys, you are right Pathfinder, alot of satisfaction in that. At least the kids know how nice a 190 buck is, the Mrs won't even get out of the car.
Probably about 1/2 of them were photographed I guess. Maybe a 1/3. There are the ones that got away and there were the ones in the fog that it was useless and then there are the ones I let walk just because they were too small, or not close enough. I took about 30,000 pics or so this year I suppose and about 12,000 of them came from November.
-
I guess maybe about 8,000 pics in November.
-
If I don't get the one buck I am after, this is the other one I want. :chuckle:

Doug, you keep posting these and it is drving me crazy.
I have a question.
Care to adopt a 37 year old son? I don't eat too much, and wouldn't be any trouble at all. :hello:
-
nice buck right there Bone
-
Wow. Hope you pick up those sheds if you still know where to find him.
-
That's a nice looking buck bone :P
-
I thought about checking on his hood Friday. Strap on the snowshoes and go for a hike jus tto see if any of the deer wintered there this year. They often do, but snow gets pretty deep there. Will see, don't want to disturb them any.

Nice rip in his left ear.
-
Lots of bear, plenty of elk, but I've about gven up down here on a mule deer that is more than 2 1/2 years old. Maybe on some private land...
-
You have some killer whitetails "starting" to surface. Got a nice strain of blonde wolves too but I understand tags for them are hard to come by. I've got some old muley pics from the Wallowas.
-
If you come this way next September and want some good elk pics, PM me. I have a stepbrother from Switzerland that came up to our elk camp for two days this year. We got him 40 yards from a 300+ bull that was mad as hell. Said it was one of the coolest experiences of his life. My 9 year old was bugling into a canyon and had 4 bulls come together right below him. Quite a scene. They all disappeared into the timber below us within a minute of each other. Lots of comotion, then the two smaller ones (raghorns) came barreling out. The two 6-bys went at it for a while. We couldn't see them from our perch, so I don't know if they locked up or if they were just hitting trees. When one finally came out he had so much grass hanging off his antlers I don't know how he could see. Lots of good bulls up here, we just can't shoot 'em..
-
personally Id much rather stare at the big bulls all day then shoot a silly spike......
-
Well, I just finished a nice thick photograph smothered in mushrooms and wine sauce... I am not sure I completely agree..
...still, they're fun to watch, and my boy gets to go home from elk camp every year with new stories.
-
:chuckle: hahah well i suppose the meat is nice but nothing gets me going like a big bull up close and personal.......
-
THat's true. 2 years ago, when he was 8, my son pulled a 5X5 in to about 15 yards. He stood there broadside for a full minute (of course I had an arrow nocked, just in case a cow stepped out behind him), and then trotted off. After he left, I got the third degree:
"why haven't you been drawn yet dad?"
"How long before you get drawn?"
"How do you fill out the application?"
"Are you sure you have been doing it right?"
"Maybe you should talk to someone who has been drawn and make sure you are doing it right..."
...Is it bad to be fed up with WDFW before you are even old enough to take Hunter's Ed?
-
:chuckle:
-
I just realized my mistake. The WDFW saw this thread and came to the conclusion that there were too many deer in Washington state....

Hey Bone, are you retired? How do you have so much time to travel all over the state to find deer? Or are all these bucks from the same relative area?
-
I WISH!!! Think of the pictures I could come up with then. Nope, I save up all my vacation and take as much of the fall off I possibly can. Then I DRIVE DRIVE and DRIVE soem more, usually throughout hte night to get to all of my fave places at daylight. Most of the time I don't get to use as much vacation, but I dug deep this year. I actually dipped into this years banka bit It won't be as nice this fall.
-
would drawing that special permit have something to do with tapping into that bank?
-
Yeah, something like that. 3 deer tags and 3 big bull tags to fill :chuckle:
-
This cropped pre-dawn image came about 4 hours drive from the last one....
