A little preview for you guys.... these were taken May 1st.  Hard to tell from the cell phone through binocular pics, but they were starting to grow some pretty decent head gear.

Look at what it shows for "points used." That will tell you what your average was. It should be 10.

Changed subject line...Bullblaster and myself took the entire season off and will be running cams and scouting down there, so we will post pics and updates on here.

Sounds like its going to be an epic season for you guys
We're nearly 8 hours away so we wont be getting too much pre season time over there.

I think I only had 11 points... not too sure... our average was 9. Not that it matters at all.
Im pretty excited to chase bulls down there.
Getting some cams set in the next coue weeks... just have to go collect them from the general season area we were going to hunt if not drawn.

You will get into bulls if you are willing to go step and deep. Called in a nice bull three years ago for a friend with that tag.

We are going in deep...Some cams are going in a few miles. Will be sleeping under the stars with the elk lotta nights. Unless my private access comes thru

Post by: one shot kill on June 18, 2014, 05:43:49 AM
That would be sweet if you have private access.  That's where the big boys live. My buddy drew that tag for muzzy last year and his private access fell through so he had to hunt the public ground. He hunted every day of the permit packed in and ended up with a decent bull right at 300.

Ive been told by few that the biggest bulls in the unit are not in private..they are in the "hell hole"  :chuckle: there are big bulls on private tho

I went to a look out and peeked into that unit last year.... :yike: :yike: :yike:  What country, wow.  Should be an epic hunt, I can't wait to see the reports.  Good luck and bring an extra set of knees.  It looked hard to just stand up on some of those hill sides. lol

Post by: huntnnw on June 18, 2014, 10:33:51 PM
I am prepared for this as I have been in hells canyon wilderness the last 3 years and that country is 3x what this unit is. canyon and ridges that drop 6-8k feet in elevation :yike:

Nice Bull, looking forward to this tag! Does anyone know how hard the general season interest it gets?

I think it depends on where you are in the unit, but in general I think this unit gets less general elk season pressure than most.  I would imagine the private gets hit fairly hard, but the public land is pretty nasty to be chasing spikes in.  That being said, my buddies and me always end up spending a few days down in the hell hole looking for them.  Of course this is during rifle general season, but I bet the same holds true for archery and muzzy seasons.

Which of the hell holes are you considering "the Hell Hole"? I've heard it referenced before. I need to know what to avoid :chuckle:
Title: Re: Mt View archery elk hunt.
Post by: andersonjk4 on June 23, 2014, 01:38:33 PM
I would consider pretty much the entire NFS portion of the unit one big hell hole  :chuckle:, but we usually end up in the Menatchee Creek drainage and consider that the whole drainage as "The Hell Hole".  I'm sure everyone who hunts the unit has there own personal hell hole though.  This unit and all of the other border units of the blues are full of them.

That's a lie! If you get a big bull you'll be happy for a year- 2 years top.  Then you'll get that itch and need to shoot another! It's a dang curse!

Mountain view modern 2012

Here's some words of advice to any anyone seeing all the pics of nice bulls from this unit.

Yes if drawn you have a chance to shoot a quality bull. But it is by far not guaranteed. You can kill just as good of a bull in any unit in the blues. I highly advice anyone wanting to put in for the unit to drive over and look at because that alone can change your mind! Nasty ground. My bull was a little over 4 miles in.

For you guys that have been drawn get in in shape! If you plan on going in a ways then have animals to pack out! I would have died trying to get my bull out without a horse.

The cooler weather will be nice for you guys.  It would be nice to get some moisture down there too, so maybe they would lift the fire and chainsaw restrictions.  Spending 20 days in the mountains without a camp fire just wouldn't be right.
Title: Re: Mt View archery elk hunt.
Post by: huntnnw on August 26, 2014, 10:10:53 PM
did they finally put fire restrictions up? when I was down in late July there was nothing posted at any campsites or NF sign about no campfires and people were cutting wood. Showing 40% rain saturday and 20% for next 2 days

There will be more nights away from camp than at camp

I'm sure they have signs up at all of the entrances into the NF.  I was up there on Labor Day weekend two years ago when they had the same "phase B" restrictions in place and there were signs up at the entrances. Unfortunately, the only places fires are allowed right now are in designated camp grounds.  Hopefully they lift the restrictions soon.

Just got back from scouting as I have to work 1 more night before I head back down for the whole season. Bullblaster and I scouted the weekend and turned out better than I could of imagined. The first night we found a big herd of cows in a area where a cam of ours was,but no bull around. Next am we started the 3.5 mi walk to a cam and halfway there we walked up on 15 cows and a cool 7x6 with a split g5 with awesome mass and 3 raghorns he was bugling, mounting cows and chasing the rags off. We made our way over to the cam and climbed up on a rock perch to take a break and a bull screams out below this goes on for a 1/2 hr as he is destroying a tree could never see the bull.We look across the canyon and a massive 7x7 bull is on the run to this bull thrashing the tree 15 min goes by and you can hear antlers crash together! never did see the other bull. We get back to camp about 11 am and bull sounds off! Sounded high pitch and small I thought it was a rag bugling being so close to camp..I decide to call to it and it came down the mt to about 300 yards with a herd of cows...it was no rag! it was a huge 6x6 with close to 20" g2's and 18+ 3rds and mass!! we figured this bull may go in the 350" range...we left him alone and listened to him bugle that day  :chuckle: also heard 2 others on that hill. Weather came in yesterday afternoon and it got cold, wet and windy ,so we took a drive and found some small bulls. I had to come home today for 1 final night of work before heading back. Bullblaster located the 7x6 tonight feeding right where we saw them yesterday am. He will be there at first light tomorrow. I got a message today where a 380" 6x6 was this am...Going to go look for him tomorrow night. We met Elkburger and and Elkterd today.

We got a chance to dive in to the country and to meet a few of the othe tag holders, Bullblaster, Huntnnw, Fly4fish and Mt. man and his friend. Everyone we met was great to visit with. As for the elk........we saw lots of bulls. The area we were in seemed to only hold bulls and there was no bugling that I heard. I tried some locate bugles in the AM but didnt get a response. Bullblaster and I also spotted a herd of Sheep. All rams, a couple that were 3/4 curl or better.
I know our return visit is sure to be full of action as the rut is just getting started. We are going crazy not being up there but know it will be worth it in the end.

In town to wash clothes and shower. Hunting has been great we have seen and heard bulls screaming every day. We have passed on 2 5 pts. I saw the biggest bull of my life Monday.. I figured over 400" . We tried to get in there and it's just not physically possible to pack out let alone trying to get to him. This morning we walked up on a big bull at 100 yards. Set up on him and nothing.. Moved down to a trail cam and had a bull come crashing at us to only have the wind switch! Heard another bull screaming below us , but he shut up. There's a 7x7 on cam here we think that's the bull we heard bugling. Off to try and find him tonight .

It's none of the mentioned guys with mossback that found the bull.. Someone I know. 460" is the estimated score of this bull.

Anyhow.. Quick update.. No bulls down or shots. Found 5 bulls in a canyon no cows. I chased a 350" 6x7 for 2 hrs yesterday got as close as 81 yards.. Heading back after those bulls either tomorrow or Wednesday. Hell of a hike in and out we are beat down. 2,300 feet down to them and out takes a toll.

That country will break a guy in a hurry... mentally and qhysically. I came home today. Lost 9 lbs there. Needed a break. Not sure if ill make it back or not. Had some family stuff happen last week and i came back to be with them and rest. Been getting i to bulls down there tho. Almost had to shoot a very angry bear yesterday that i walked up on in the brush... popping its teeth and hair standing up at 5 yards! Full draw and yelling at it. Finally after about 25 seconds it ran off.

Back for 2 days.. My body is tore up! Go back and give her hell for final 6 days. See big bulls almost daily . I made it in  back after the big 6x7 got super close again! A rag 5 bedded 44 yards to my left screwed up my plans! Watched the big bull for over 2 hrs shred trees and chase spikes. I called in a 270"ish 6x7 at 12 yards not what I want to hang my tag on.  One of the bulls I'm after.

Here's what happened when I was there. Day one 6x7 called in for my buddy at 56 yards he did not fill good about taking the shot so he passed. Day two back in the bulls called a big 6x6 somewhere around 330 if I guessed. Came into 12 yards from the shooter with no shot I was hiding behind a stump about 10 yards from him while the bull tried to figure out were the noise was coming from. He got tired of us and buggered off. Then I packed out a bear for a buddy that evening. Day three Was a rest day for the hunter so we went down in the farm land and looked for bucks with no luck. Day four Back down in the canyons looking for elk could not call one in that day but spotted 3 big bulls for the next days hunt. Day 5 got into those bulls we had spotted both mid 300 class 6x6 and 6x7. Could not close the deal 17 hours on that day almost killed Dave my buddy with the tag. Day 6 heading home with no bone but the sheds I had found along the way.
I got him talked into going back he had a good friend go back and help this time. Turns out you just have to be in the right place at the right time. he shot a 320" bull yesterday and found out what the real work is like. Congrats to him he didn't give up and it worked out.
I hope all those other tag holders fill there tags all of you seemed like great guys. Dig deep a don't let those hills get the best of you.

Going into this hunt, I set a herd bull standard until the last 3 days, when a satellite 6 point would work. With two warm days left to hunt and in a moment of weakness, I filled my elk tag with a trophy spike. After chasing an uninterested herd bull, this dude gave me way too long to think about the tag soup I ate last time I had this tag. An arrow to the lungs sealed the deal. An easy pack and good footage being the deciding factor, figuring if I was gong to go small, then might as well be unique.

I had more close calls on herd bulls than I can count. I'd say 10 situations that didn't just quite work out on 320 - 360 type herd bulls. All I needed was good luck, but got none. Cooler weather would have helped too. The second half of the season was near or above 90 degrees every day!  Had a great hunt though, and would us two points over again to draw this tag.

this was truely the hardest hunt i have ever attempted, i gave that place all i had even though i gave up a few days early. It takes a different kind of crazy to put in the effort every day in there. Great job guys!
It was an awesome experience to chase amd actually have chances at world class bulls. An experience ill never forget.

I'm finally home and settled in and getting reacquainted with my family. It was great meeting many members from the forum who also had the tag and congrats to those who were able to fill a tag.
The bulls started talking the last few days in the area we were in. I had a good friend join me for the last 5 days of the hunt and he was a great caller. He called in many small bulls into shooting range but I was holding for a true quality bull. The last fading light of my season had me within 20 yards of 2 350" bulls screaming thier heads off in the brush that only left me with a frontal opportunity with a thick fir bow separating me and the bull. The bull caught my movement and bolted.
This was the best elk hunt that I've been on. I saw more bulls in the last 3 weeks than I've seen in 20 years hunting elk on the Westside.
I had a blast and that's what it's all about!  A nick rack would have been nice too!

Post by: huntnnw on September 22, 2014, 12:49:01 AM
This hunt lived up to exactly what I expected as a permit bull hunt! It was amazing to chase big bulls everyday. Every bull I heard bugle and went after was over 300" and most were in the 320"-350" range, but 1 bull that I thought was a big 6x7 I had been chasing came into 12 yards as I thought here we go..and to my surprise it was a 270" 6x7 I let him walk and enjoyed the show and moved up to another bull bugling which was the big 6x7. I sat and watched him for over a hour as I was pinned down by a 5pt that was bedded 44 yards to my left I was unable to move on the bull like I wanted. I chased more bulls than I could write on here. The last 6 days I got into big bulls every morning and under 90 yards and it was becoming very frusturating that nothing was working to get them in. Sept 18th was the best day I got down into the bottom and about the deepest part of the unit and heard 8 bulls screaming. As I stood above listening I decided to dive all the way to creek where a bull was bugling and chase him first as the wind was blowing down the creek and then move my way up the canyon to other bulls if this one doesnt pan out. I get down there and the bull is on the other side of the creek and up about 900 feet in elevation..it was litterally a cliff and I really questioned WTH I was even doing.. I had him in a steep narrow avalanche chute..wind blowing up I decided to come up a draw over from him then sneak across to where he was..as I get close I still hear him bugling about 70 yards away thinking this is working out perfect! then I hear nothing for 10 min...then I hear branches busting above me! well this one is done! :bash: while this is going on I hear a bull right below me screaming! so I go back down filter water to replenish. I work over to where I thought he was and cow call nothing!! dang it. I leave there and decide to head up the canyon where I heard 3 bulls, but before heading up I decided to heat up a mt house and take a break...I was about done eating and I blow on my cow call and the bull by creek I heard earlier lights up! what in the world,so I pack up my stuff and head back he is going nuts! I blow one mew and he bugles 6-8 times...Im thinking maybe its a sattelite. As I get close I see litterally hundreds of rubs and huge dust pits where the bull has been rolling. I keep moving closer and notice he is in a small draw about 60 yards away. I catch movement to my left and its cows coming at me..then I realize this is a herd bull and notice the cows are going to hit my trail  and prolly freak out! they stop and turn around..I grab a mouth reed and let out a bugle before the cows can get back to herd...this gets the bull going then nothing for a few minutes.. I keep listening and watching then out of nowhere he pops up at 11 yards head on! nothing between me and him!  :bash: I cant draw...he pegs me and bust back down the draw... I move over to the draw and he is qtr away at 69 yards...I shoot and hit a limb at about the 60 yard area! bull walks up the hill. I gather my stuff and decide to head back up the canyon where I heard them earlier... I get to 100 yards of them and I spot a small 6pt bedded below me I cant go anywhere or he will see me,so I sit down for 2 hrs waiting for him to get up all the while listenting to 2 bulls scream non stop. He gets up and moves into timber, so I make my move I get to about 70 yards and let out some mews followed by a bugle bull goes nuts...he comes running out to me, but in a bad spot! 45 yards and all i can see is his head...this was a huge 6 I figured in the 360" range...they moved up the canyon and that was it. These were just a few of the better hunts...I got into bulls almost everyday and heard bulls bugle everyday from Aug29th till the end it was insane to hunt elk like this probably saw 40 plus bulls.

Sept 19th the last day and I decide to head to some drainages that have had elk in them and since I hadnt been in there in several days it should be good. As I reach the top before going over I spotted a spike and 3x4 bull sparring down below and they were close to the pack trail. I go up and over and listen and call and nothing! silence. I decide well its the last day nothing is going on up here..Ill go back down to where I saw the small bulls and call. I walk 200 yards down a finger to where I last saw them and let out some cow calls.. I hear stuff busting below me..cow call some more and they are getting close. Now I see 2 of them a spike and a fork coming right to me. They come up below me, but on other side of finger and I have a big rockpile and cant see them.. I hear them they are close..the fork pops out above me and is walking right at me, but I have a bad shot he keeps walking and will be broadside soon.He hits the 7 yard mark he is almost broadside...I settle pin and whack right thru heart and lung...he just stands there! he takes off I blow on my cow call to stop him,but I shouldnt have as he was running up hill! closer to trail :chuckle: he ran 20 yards and fell over. Almost felt like a gift to have those bulls right by trail on the last morning of hunt. It was not the bulls I was after, but it was nice to leave with a bull for the freezer after hunting 17 of the 19 days. The hunt was pretty much everything I could have imagined, but the indians slaughtering the elk, some shooting elk and taking just the heads! it would put me bad mood watching this crap! road hunting in the dark with rifles on the top of the cab on blankets. The WDFW should put a disclaimer on hunts where this crap goes on and I could give 2 s%^*$ about what they think I harvested when i witenssed that BS. It was nice meeting board members down there. Ill load up some pics and a vid I have with that bull walking up on me later when I get them downloaded.

up to the 10min mark is me calling in the bull...not much after I shoot..couldnt edit it down

Ill also add that people applying for this unit should drive there and look at it...I bet over half or more couldnt physically hunt most of the nat'l forest. Horses will do nothing for you if you think you will use stock. Alot of the areas with the big bulls were in places there are no trails near.Mtman and myself were the only people I saw up high in the natl forest.  This hunt was BY FAR the most physically demanding hunts I have ever done EVER!! it was insane steep and most of the time when your hiking you are litterally fearing either for your life or falling and being crippled out there. I trained alot for this hunt and it beat me down I put in 8 months of olympic lifts, stairclimbing, running and weighted hikes and hiking 3-5 days a week.I have never had a knee issues my whole life..As I sit here writing this I can barely squat down from the pain in my knees my ankles are still swollen from the insane amount of sidehilling. I am not trying to steer people from not applying here, but seeing people down there in shock of how steep it was and gave up and went home.

It was the toughest but the best hunt I've been on! I agree that pack horses could only get halfway to a downed animal. It didnt look like any pack animals have been down the west fork trail for years. I guess the forest service didnt have time to clear that one. Maybe they were too busy keeping your camp toilet cleaned. :chuckle: Great meeting you guys!

To give you an idea where the majority of the big bulls were in this country... the top left ridgeline I was parked out of the picture and the far right of pic in canyon bottom is where the majority of big bulls were..the center of pic in the timbered bottoms is another spot I got into bulls. There is 0 pack trails in this area. I figured 2 days to get a bull out with 2 guys

Very nice pics of the country, everyone should take notice of your writings and pics as they are a very good synopsis of this unit, lots of Bulls though throughout, a very good unit.

You are right about that unit. It's not for the faint of heart! My bro in law and I drew a spring bear tag in that unit and we had a blast. We didn't make it as far down as you did though! Congrats on a fun hunt!

Way to stick it out. Sounds like you did the right thing. Held out for a big one as long as you could and still came home with some meat. Way to close the deal in the end. It takes a lot to get everything to aline in that country with the stick and string. Would be nice for some of the tag holders to have a shot close to the road. But If I were in elk over there close to the road I would be in the bed of an Indians truck.

Thanks for taking us along Huntnnw. Great pics. I love that country. I have bear hunted it but never for elk. I want to rifle elk hunt that area. But haven't put in due to not wanting to drive those roads if snow comes in :yike:

Putting meat in the feezer at the end helped, but kinda bummed I didnt get a good bull. Bulls were not responding well to calls untill the last 2 days. The last 2 days were the best days I had.

I agree about those last 2 days! Makes me wish we had just a couple more....
Congrats again Shane!
