Saturday and Sunday my son and I got to attend the Pe Ell hunters ed class. He shocked me when he answered 71 out of 75 questions correct. It was probably the best fathers day gift ever! Now to get him his first deer.

Congratulations. It is a stressful time waiting for test results and such a great feeling when they pass.

Congratulations there proud Papa. Sounds like your hunting partner is just about ready to rock. Time to start scouting and practing.

Glad to hear about the new blood in hunting DIY. Thanks for raising him right!

Thanks Rainier10! I cant wait to get out with him. I didn't realize how big of a thing it was for him to accomplish this. He was super proud of himself. after a few hours at home I realized how I had just got a life time hunting buddy! I sat in the entire class with him and learned a lot my self. trying to debate if I start him in the permit game now or not? Probably buy him Wyoming points for the next few years till he can draw a 50-60 pound bow. then well chase big bulls.

I put my daughters in for ghost points their first year as they were only 9, the next year I put my oldest in for actual hunts. This is the first year for the youngest. We are going to go slow like I did with the first. I just took her gun for a walk with us the first year, short hunts, pretty noisy checking out stuff along the way, we even saw a few deer running away from us. After the first year we hunted a little harder and in her third year we started focusing on being more quiet and stalking. I didn't want to burn her out with the boredom of always being quiet and still. I felt it was better for her to enjoy the outdoors and then if she really wanted to take a deer we could work on the tactics to make that happen. Make sure you dress him warm and comfortable, you want him to enjoy his time in the woods. I feel it is better to go slow and have them enjoy it at first rather than overwhelm them or have them not enjoy it and decide they don't want to do it.
About the class... I sat through both of them with my daughters, the first one I even took the class and test even though I was born after Jan 1st 1971, (that is on the test by the way). I really enjoyed the classes and found that each location had a slightly different class and instructional technique. I learned something new from each class. I highly recommend everyone take one and actually plan on having my daughters take the class again as a refresher course when they are 16 just to brush up on the information and hopefully pick up some new information.
I hope you guys have an enjoyable season and you end up with a lifelong hunting partner.

Should the rest of us go warn all the deer, ducks, elk, rabbits, grouse, geese that he's coming?

My congratulations, sir, on your choice of words. We do not "harvest" game. we "kill" it. We harvest corn and potatoes and beans and carrots.
It is important to know and understand the difference.

Put him in for all points every year - good investment. Youth with 5 or 6 points has a good chance at some great hunts.

My son was also in that same class. He had the same 71 out of 75.

 I think I can recognize you from your avatar. Congrats to him!

Congratulations to you both, my son just passed his today up in Sultan. He's still not sure if he wants to hunt, but he is closer to it anyways.
