Thanks guys, I am hoping to do the tag justice.
Bone, I remember reading your Selkirk story, ( I think it was in a magazine) it sounded like a great adventure. I'M looking forward to a similar experience.

Awesome draw, congrats!

I drew an out of state N. Idaho Moose Tag last year and know for a fact those big bulls knew where the state line was between my unit and Selkirks. Oh wait, the quality of animals might a little something to do with the difference of 65 tags ID) and 15 tags..... Excellent draw, as mentioned before it'll be a hunt of a lifetime. Enjoy the experience.

After 12 days in the Selkirks I finally pulled the trigger on a Bull.
My Son In Law and I spent from Oct. 3th to the 13th looking for rutting Bulls. The best Bull we turned up was broken at the top of his passenger side paddle. If it matched the other side he was missing 4 points and 5 or 6 inches of paddle. It looked like it was broken off the night before. I told my SIL that I had to pass on the Bull. He wasn't real happy with me but understood the OIL tag.
From there I headed to Idaho for an annual Muley hunt off of dirt bikes. I broke 2 ribs on Oct. 29th and new that would come to haunt me on the Moose hunt.
Back To the Selkirks on Nov. 3rd. Nothing but Cows and small Bulls. I finally found another descent bull on Wed. the 5th way up in the high country. 60 yards above the skidder road . I couldn't pass him up. Did I mention I was solo? Moving that big SOB around with 2 broke ribs, by myself, was a chore to say the least. 4 1/2 hrs and I had him loaded up and on my way back to camp.
I learned a lot about Moose, had a ton of fun calling and generally just enjoyed my time in the woods. Sorry about the pics, they were the best I could muster up.
-
Congrats :IBCOOL:
-
Nice bull  Cant imagine trying to move one of them around and gut solo
-
beautiful bull congrats!!
-
-
That's awesome. Well done
-
Congrats. Way to go. Sounds like a fun hunt, even with the ribs.
-
Wow
Great effort and a nice bull.
Way to get it done solo :chuckle:
-
how much do you think the head and cape weighed? how far did you have to pack hi out?
congrats on a great hunt/bull!
-
I'm proud of you son. What an undertaking, alone. I want a Moose almost as bad as a wolf.
Nice job and effort.
-
When I packed the head and cape out it still had about 40 lbs of neck meat attached, it was dark and I wanted to get it back to the truck (last load). So I would say the head, horns and cape plus the neck meat was around 80 to 100 lbs.
I weighed a bone in hind quarter today and it weighed 92 lbs on a butchers scale, the head horns and cape may have weighed the same, but was much more awkward to pack. The whole thing weighed 372 lbs. That was four bone in quarters, neck meat and rib meat. The back straps weighed 16 and 18 lbs each. I think I packed out close to 500 lbs about 1/2 of a mile on a down hill grade.
The packing was the easy part, it was getting the Bull moved around to quarter and cape that was the toughest thing to do. I broke my ribs on the left side and I am right handed, so every time I pulled and lifted that hide I felt like I got stabbed in the side.
Rolling him over to cape and pull the off side shoulder off was pretty interesting. I tied two ropes to his antlers and twisted his head the direction I wanted him to roll then tied off the ropes very taunt. Then pulled the remaining front leg up onto my shoulder and drove forward as hard as I possibly could. He rolled right over. I had 200' of good 1/2" climbing rope, it saved the day. I could tie off to a leg and a tree and lift the leg high enough to work my way around it.
It was definitely work but I wouldn't change a thing. Did I mention I will be 48 in 10 days!

Great info.
I shot an elk this year and had to pack out the meat and head/cape with a buddy. My pack was 30 lbs with rifle and spotting scope, and I think the head and cape was 70-80 so all in I am guessing 100-110. I base this on the fact the four quarters -boneless - weighed 198 lbs (sans backstraps and some of the neck scraps). We did those 4 bags in one trip each, so 100# packs. The head felt far worse to carry out.
we were both talking about how horrible a moose would be to haul out if we were lucky enough to have the chance!
-
And well done on a tough packout! In the words of my hero Pat McManus... It was a fine and pleasant misery!
-
Dude that's my Moose! :yike:
Congrats Ironhead! If you look at mine on OIL pictures its hard to see from that front angle but that bull is damn near identical!
For future reference, don't think twice about throwing a "I need help" when confronted with circumstances like you had. When a guy is injured/disabled and needs help, I wouldn't think twice about helping. Only couple hours from me.
I'm lamed up at 44, had knee surgery in the summer and had 3 others help me. I'm good to go now.
Once again Congrats!
-
Congrats Nice Bull!! Way to tough it out.
-
Great bull! You definitely earned that one.
-
I don't know how I missed this thread.... Congratulations! Glad you were drawn, and took a nice bull. It's bummer you broke your ribs, but that just makes the story, and memories that much better. Nice job!
-
