Well, I have Three weeks to dedicate to My Moose hunt and two three day short trips.
So far, I am thinking the first week for the rut and the last two weeks when the leaves drop.
I have never been on a Moose hunt and do not know anything, other than what I have been told and read.
I am trying to do as much reading and internet searches as possible, but not much about Washington timing.
Any information would be greatly appreciated,
Thank You in advance,
John

Congrats on the tag. If you purchase one of these http://www.mytopo.com/products/hunt-area-unit.cfm?state=WA&species=ALL&gmu=117 (http://www.mytopo.com/products/hunt-area-unit.cfm?state=WA&species=ALL&gmu=117) and want to meet one of these days, I can point out some pretty good spots that are not over hunted.
-
I ordered the Colville National Forest map and the Dept. of Natural Resource Map, but if this one is better I will order it also.
I would love to get together and talk!
Thank You in advance,
John

I personally enjoyed November the best on my hunt in terms of overall visibility and moose sightings went way up. Don't rule out the later dates of your hunt, only negative is the added stress of wanting to do that OIL tag justice.
-
That's an awesome tag. Congratulations.
I had a 49DN tag about 15 years ago. The thing that struck me is that everyone is willing to help someone with a tag like that. Unlike deer and elk where hunters are reluctant to share information, it's just the opposite with an OIL tag. Everyone I met wanted to help and give me information.
I made multiple scouting trips during the summer. On average I saw one to two moose per day.
If you want a good, representative moose you should have no trouble filling the tag your first week. If you are looking for a record book animal it may take longer. If you wait until late November you may encounter snow which makes tracking easier and travel more difficult.
Good luck. You should have a great time.
-
Thank You for the responses and pictures. It is going to be very hard to judge these huge animals.
I have to do my homework so I do the tag justice.
John
-
absolutely hunt the first part of the rut , there's nothing like hunting moose when they hunt you. practice simple hand to mouth calls they will respond , some of the best times you will ever have. with that tag i'd be looking for a nasty bull with triple brows

Thank You all again,

In Idaho its the way to go. We only use them there. The timber companies allow them bhind the locked gates. Our honey hole is about a 45 minute ride behind the gate. Makes it easier to get in and out. A lot of fun! And the funny thing is, the timber companies allow this access, and there is absolutely no trash, no trails made off the road. People respect the priviledge
-
My dad got this guy a few years back durring the rut. Calling in a bull moose I don't think it could get any better then that.
-
Nice mount. I have a perfect spot on my wall for a moose. Just need to kill one.
-
Wolves have killed all the moose you should turn your tag in.
-
Call pendorielleadventures - that is his moose playground. If you want a big bull get with him. He is a great guy that likes to hunt and really knows washington moose... He helped me when I had my tag
-
I drew the same tag gonna go up the Sunday before the opener and scout a few days and hunt that whole week. Every one is saying to be selective in till November. It's gonna be tough passing one up because of there size. If you'd like to buddie up I'm down. Plan on taking as much time in November off that I need.
-
they all look big don't get in any hurry and look at as many as you can before choosing THE ONE congrats on the tag and good luck theres nothing like a 1200lb animal lumbering towards you like hes gonna kick your a@@ glunking the whole way its a thrill/adrenaline rush all of its own!!!

I was just over there hunting for wolf. We put on nearly 300 miles on our ATV's, behind gates etc. NO TRASH, NO OFFROADING and Idaho supports it 100 %......
To bad Washington State won't pull there heads out of the sand ( not really the term I want to use ) I'll spend my money over there instead of trying to spend it here.

I get pics of some solid bulls on one of my cams up there. If you guys aren't finding any good bulls, let me know and I can shoot you the directions on where to go. This bull has been in this same area the last two years. Didn't save any of the pics of him from last year but he was bigger.
-
Just heard from them. Seen 2 shooter bulls today. One wide shooter called in to 30 yards and jae saw a giant with triple fronts!
-
I'm stoked!!! :yike: and I'm not even the shooter, leaving early tomorrow morning hopefully he waits :bash: until I get there before he shoots it going to try and film it. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

john was the OP of this thread. he killed his on the opener. the one I just posted was Butch (they applied as a group application) both were 47 wide and both were shot with a rifle. I was just a helper/packer on the second one. I am completely impressed with hoy my mystery ranch packed the head and cape! I am guessing that load to have been 140-160 lb! pack was still comfortable but my legs are still hurting!
-
Congrats to both John and Butch! You guys don't mess around.  And thanks to you Bullblaster for posting the pics!
Those are a couple of beauty bulls! I can imagine how much fun it was for all of you!
That mystery ranch pack sounds great! That's a huge, heavy load. I'll have to have a look at one.
Good luck on the rest of all of your guy's hunting adventures this season.
-
Heck yeah! What beautiful animals! Congrats to a hunt of a lifetime!
-
awesome bull congrats!!
-
Butch, you, your boys and your gang are GREAT. It was super cool of you guys taking time to help out Bob and his 15 year old daughter with her moose. Nice moose by the way. Paul
-
Wow! What a fantastic trip! Great bulls for both of you....
The coolest part (to me) is how many HW dudes jumped in to make it a hunt of a lifetime for you. Well done by all!
-
I would like to thank everyone for the help in the preparation of our moose hunt. People spent hours on the phone with me, offered to let Me stay on there property, shower at there houses, hunt with us, come over for dinner, and numerous other accounts of kindness. I THANK YOU ALL ON BEHALF OF BUTCH AND I!
The anticipation before the hunt, scouting and preparation was awesome, spending time with friends was priceless. It is an experience that we will never forget.
Calling in these animals is incredible. Mark was the only experienced moose hunter in the group until Chris showed up. They both did very well and taught us all we know. That for Me is not very much.
The day I harvested the first Moose, Mark had spotted a cow and a calf at about 1:00pm I moved ahead so He could call for me, another Moose started moving in immediately making a ton of noise and came in to about 15 feet from me (small bull). Mark kept calling, breaking branches and raking small bushes and trees. Several minutes later a larger bull with one horn came in to about 30 yards. Wow what a rush.
The Moose finally buggered out. We went back up to the old road. We stared to leave the area, got about three hundred yards away and decided to go back and hunt the top side of the hill. As soon as we came around the ridge and could see a larger bull was coming down and come out onto the old road. Me being unsure of a shooter, I asked for Marks approval and He stated, SHOOT IT, SHOOT IT. I could not be any happier.
I also have to thank all that participated in the hunt Butch, Mark, Glenn, Kevin, and Chris.
I had a great time hunting and camping with You all, Great Time!!!!!!!!!!
I will let Butch comment on His hunt.
Thank You all,
John

you should have seen my boys faces after hunting all day and got call from bob 1 hour before dark. I called john to tell him we would be late getting back to camp, stand up guy john is him and mark beat us there to help bob and his daughter. mark took some priceless pics of smiles on there faces and we loaded cow up whole in his truck. when it was all done my boys where glad we helped and learned something about karma as the next day I shot the animal of my life time.
-
