Title: new coyote hunter
Post by: snowninja on June 19, 2014, 12:45:44 PM
well its time to take care of the chicken/duck eaters. I live on 5 acres that borders tree farm and they come in from the forest, have caught many of them on my cameras but never shot one. I have a pasture in the lower corner of my property and plan to use a call to bring them in so I can start eliminating the dirty dogs.

so to some questions, would my ar15 w/p223 scope be a good start or should I use my .308 (seems a little overkill), also have a mini30 (7.62x39). ?? i don't have 22-250, 243, etc.

when calling I plan to sit in my tree stand hidden about 100 yards from the call area (lower pasture). how close will they come to the call? thinking about placement of e-call. could go as far as 40-50 yards from the edge of the tree farm.

anyone ever call in a 30-40 year old forest? guessing too much cover and obstruction to get a clear shot but there are a couple good spots i can think of out there.

do the tail wagers work ok in tight spots? i don't have one but could easily set one up using a servo from my RC car.

thanks

I'm defiantly not an expert but:

A .223 is more than enough for a coyote, use a good varmint bullet and they should be DRT.

As long as they don't scent or see you I think they will come right up to the call. There are videos on youtube of guys calling them it to under ten yards. Others hang up several hundred yards out, I assume those are the educated ones. As you saw the one I shot was pretty small/young but had no idea I was there even though I was sitting in plain sight not wearing camo (jeans and an earth colored long sleeve shirt).

I've don't have any experience with any of the motion decoys but I plan to make one pretty soon out of some scrap lumber, an old auto antenna and some feathers. We'll see how it works.

Good luck to ya!

223 is plenty, If you can get shots without calling, take them. Call when you have to. if you cannot make sure 300 yard shots you need more practice.

Use a mojo decoy with rabbit sent it helps with the movement. I always place my decoy down wind from me.  So if a dog circles he would smell the decoy first. it works great  I have had them circle down wind and as soon as he smell the decoy. He move in for the kill but that never happens , because I shoot him first  :chuckle: Good luck and what for this winter for prime hides.
