I've wrapped cling wrap around this a couple times before and foamed it with Great Stuff(expanding foam or carpenter in a can)but it doesn't last. I was whining about it at the Iron Amos 3D shoot and one of the guys I was shooting with that's involved with the archery committee at TSC suggested inserting a cheap block style target.
Well, I bought a good broadhead target from Cabelas, cut it to fit the opening I cut out of the elk with a chain saw and sawzall, wrapped it with cling wrap, drilled a few holes here and there and foamed it in place after pounding it in with a rubber mallet.
Just thought I'd share. It should be good as new for a lot less than the $540.00 they want for a new mid section. Should be ready by tomorrow I hope. Strip the cling wrap, do a little rasp work and spray some paint on it.

The square I cut out of the elk measured 11" x 11". The holes I drilled were to insert the expanding foam nozzle into so I don't have any voids when it's done.

I have "Great Stuffed" my Rinehart Black Bear so many times it's not funny. Just did it again this week (in preparation for my new bow to arrive in the mail this week). I just filled the big holes, let the stuff expand, sawed it off, sanded it and hit her with a new coat of $1 black spraypaint.
You are right though... it doesn't last long, especially if you are shooting broadheads at it.
You're idea looks like a good one though. :tup: I am curious to see how it works.

Well folks, a little cleaning up, some paint and a couple quick 30yd groups and it's stopping arrows just like brand new. Great idea. I'll have to thank that guy at TSC next time I see him.

I used Great stuff for big voids as well. The CHEEP calking from anywhere will work well also but is hard to pull arrows. Caulking works good before it gets really bad, and to put a light coat on filling voids before painting. We have done that MANY times at Silver Arrow Bowmen. Fortunately now we have LOTS of Rhineheart targets... I also herd people use the more rubberised foam pads and roll them up to fill a hole then skim/ layer with caulking to hold together works well.
Targets are expensive. the hardest part for clubs is keeping the scoring rings on for the 3d shoots. once they are gone they make great targets for home use. One club member has a 7 target walk through at his house from targets he has repaired.
ANYTHING to keeping you shooting is a good thing to me! :tup:

Elk looks great. I may try this next time I have to repair the bear.
That's how I got him too SpecialT. Bought him from our local archery club after a 3D shoot. I also had a beaver an antelope and a boar, but they burned up in my garage fire a few years ago.

I patched one of Granite falls sportsmans clubs elk yesterday I'll post pictures when all done.

Great projects, I just finished building a stand for the bear that my wife bought at auction at Tacoma Sportsmen's club . Need to do a little repair on the vitals and it will be ready to go. For those of you that are in need of a project 3D , there will be a few for auction at the Wire Shoot 3D at Tacoma Sportsmen's Club on August 9/10, we usually get rid of a couple old ones at each shoot and put the money towards some new Rinehart's.

Are you using regular spray paint on the targets? I was told you needed special paint on them or the paint sticks to the arrow ?

You can use spay paint, or latex paint. it kinda depends on the target. Latex works pretty good because its flexible when its warm but brittle when cold and chips off in chunks. The older delta targets, Like the one in Drocks Pic, crumble. The foam gets old and sluffs off. A good layer of latex paint in the morning of HOT day, will let it soak in to the deteriated foam but cure really well in the heat. PERFECT fix for home use, and a good way for clubs to make thier targets last longer and look good.

thanks for the info-my wife found 16 older 3-d targets for 150 bucks at a garage sale! finally she found something good from all her junking! Anyways they definitely need painted so i will do the latex

I just used some latex paint.

I just used latex spray paint. Doesn't matter how long it lasts, when it gets shot up, I'll simply spray it some more.
