Anybody else watching those numbers across Bonneville? Come on 4 fish limit!
-
Yep
-
:yeah: :IBCOOL:
-
Wow!! Fishing is gonna be good!!
-
:yeah: every day that is one of the first things I check!!!!!!
-
Record run!!!! Starting to get a little twitchy at work thinking about them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Is anyone actually catching any of these?
-
I heard a rumor that they may enact an emergency rule change and up the limit to 6 fish. Anyone else heard this? :dunno:
I'm headed over to the Columbia tonight to fish for the weekend, I'll try to send back a report asap. Have a buddy that caught 12 sockeye in a couple hours the other morning.
-
Can one fish for these Sockeye from shore somewhere, or is a boat required for Columbia?
-
Sockeye are probably the easiest salmon to fish from the bank as they usually run right against the shore. Not sure where to go but Google will probably help you out.
-
How do you rig for them?

2012 had a 6 fish limit so one can hope!
-
How do you rig for them?
Trolling, flasher, 12-18" leader, smile blade with mini squid tipped with a pinch of shrimp. Anywhere from 15-35ft depth. And go a little heavy on the leader, 15lb min.
From the bank, never tried it but i'm sure a SnG with a chunk of shrimp would work just fine
-
OK it is official SIX fish limit starting July 11 or July 16 depending on location how do I get in on this??? Is the area around Vantage good ?? I would love to get my son onto this ideas??
Thanks

Does anyone know how long (roughly speaking) these runs usually provide good fishing?
-
Already a four fish limit for reds on the UC. Rumors of upping it to 8
-
Upped it to 6 Sockeye, @ kings.

Upped it to 6 Sockeye, @ kings.
Really? Post a link please if you have one.
-
I,ve fished them with a flasher and flatfish , red or gold u20 about 20 inches back or a pair of red #2 gamagatsu 12-16 behind flasher . the trick we found was go as slow as possible . used to just bump in and out gear ( really slow )
-
Don't have the link. It should be on WDFW's website under news. I got an email. And it was 2 Kings. Total of 8 fish I believe.
-
Is there a website or a resource to track, on which part of the Columbia the fish are running in?
-

Depends on whee you want to chase them. You can follow them ll the way up the Columbia and have good fishing for 2 months. The Brewster pool is usually hot for a solid 3 weeks and should be good until the middle to the end of August
-

Google "bonneville dam counts"
-
Anchor up in 4-12 ft of water. Run a small prawn spinner (think Coon shrimp) off a lead cannon ball. Trolling in the pools is also highly effective with a dodger/flasher combo. yes we have a 6 fish limit starting 07/11/14.
Been putting fish in the boat in the hanford reach, headed to Wanapum the next 3 days will report.

That's how it always read, and is correct. 8 total. No more than 4 sockeye, and 2 hatchery adult kings, thus leaving the final two fish as Chinook jacks. 8 total.
-
The news release says 8 salmon 2 of which may be adult Chinook hatchery fish and 6 may be sockeye, all must be over 12 inches in length. Sockeye with colored floy tags must be released. This is for above Priest Rapids dam.

The emergancy rule changed it from 4 sockeye max to 6 sockeye max. Still has the overall limit of 8, just no more than two clipped kings or 6 sockeye.
-
When have the sockeye historically shown up in Brewster. Is it around the same time as kings!?

You are 100% correct. The 6 sockeye max rule went into effect this morning. Glad to see that and fingers are crossed it gets to 8 or 10.

What do you guys think,
Thinking of doing a one day trip to Wanapum Dam or Wells Dam this weekend, but I would be limited to bank fishing. Do I have any chance of catching sockeye there at all from the bank?
-

Wish I could help but I've never fished them from shore
-
On Wells Dam. The upriver side the rocks are always bloody. Just bring a wagon to carry 2 ice chests 1 for WATER the other 1 for fish you catch. Tackle box bait etc. The wagon makes it easier to carry all your gear from the parking spots.
-
Fished wanapum yesterday after work. Fishing was a little slow but managed 4 fish. Running four rods from the boat. Wanapum is a tough fishery. Head to Brewster. Lots of good advice on here so far.

How's that? The upriver side is closed to salmon fishing right now all the way to the Brewster bridge like usual. :dunno:
-
When it opens you need a wagon. Or try the Powerhouse Park in Chelan falls now.
-
Its only 5 more days.
-
never a fish caught this morning,I had them jumping all around me,I was as tight on the bank as they were,Talk about close mouth..

Has anyone had luck for sockeye fishing from the bank around wanapum? Do they hit spinners, flys, shrimp and a bobber? Was there today in a friends boat and man they were jumping everywhere next to the bank. Any ideas?

Im gonna try cha chas again and some small pink spinners in the morning, priest dam banks are crazy with them sockeye,

Hadn out

Can you fish from shore?
-
there is shore access and fish all around..Same this morning as yesterday, tons of fish they wont hit nothing.I wonder if the ladder has something to do with it...our boat was surrounded by fish for several hrs
-
I had the same experience, tons of fish around but no bites from shore. I was wondering if shrimp from a bobber would work. I might try that next.

where were you fishing at?
-
Right at the dam, toilet bowel.
-
Who has fished for these fish before? What usually works and when do they usually start biting?
-
They seem to really like small pieces of shrimp.
-
We need some pictures of these fish! So far they are just rumors.
-
That pool is a long row in my pontoon boat... (it's good excersize) :chuckle: But I'll be there in a couple of weeks. I hope this run holds out.

When i took my toon, it was no problem launching in the Okanogan right off the hwy. Paddling back up was a little difficult, but you can walk it up the river if you need to.
The fly rod would work, but there isn't much room between boats and you need to be able to get down to 25+ ft. So if you can achieve that depth in 50ft of line, you'll be alright. Personally I'd go with the poor man's downrigger, 6oz cannonball dropper.

That's helpful info, I've never fished for sockeye but want to do it this year on the upper Columbia, any other helpful info would be appreciated. :hello:
-
I was just there and I caught several at only 13 feet on the downrigger 28 was the deepest. Dodger, red hooks, pink hoochie, smile blade. Trolled 1 MPH. Fish up to 4 lbs I caught 10 which was the limit for Thur & Fri. Sorry I didn't take pictures I only have the frozen fish to show.
-
Theres camping next to the boat launch for free, it's a dirt parking lot. They have a lagoon that you can moor your boat in right by the launch. Troll between the pumphouse and the mouth. Have a compentent person fishing with you as it is tight quarters trolling there.
-
They are easy to catch. It is the combat boats that take away from this fishery. Dale if you want more details give me a call anytime.
-
Anyone try from the shore?
-
Dale, it's not a hard fishery but it is crowded. We used 000 chrome/brass Gibbs Dodgers, 16″ 30# test leaders, a pink mini squid with a small pink spin and glo and 2 # 1 pink Gamakatsu hooks. We tipped the first hook with a piece of cured coon stripe prawn in pink. I used my regular trolling gear, Scotty Down riggers, divers, Ugly stick lite rods, and set between 11′ and 20′. Troll at or close to .8 mph on the GPS. It’s not a hard fishery to learn, just troll the same path as everyone else. If others boats are hooking up and you’re not then ask questions. Most people were very friendly and helpful. You don't have to stay in close with all the other boats, we did just as well fishing further out. Also, since you are fishing pretty shallow, let out about 30' of line before you clip your line onto your release and keep your drag kinda loose. This will help keep your fish hooked up better. We lost a few before we figured that out. Good luck, we will be out there next weekend, the 25,26, 27.
-
Rowing my pontoon, I'll have to fish the edges of the combat zone at the pool. Once I get a fish on light fly tackle, I don't have much choice but to play a fish out a bit. And a 5 pound fish can tow my boat a faster than one would think. -and there's some current there. I could drop anchor, but I've already experienced a fish wrap in the anchor line. With sinking fly line and a little lead wire-wrap, getting down 15-25' shouldn't be much of a problem. I'm trying to force myself to fly fish only this year but I'm sure to bring the spin caster with me too. I haven't looked, is the Okanogan open?

It's not free parking there. Maybe you got away with it, next time pay. The tiny town of Brewster put in and maintains the park and wonderful boat ramp so don't rip them off. They installed the best dock I have ever tied up to also.

I called the City Clerks office yesterday and they told me that the parking lot is free.

Yes, parking is free. I don't know where you're getting your info, but it's wrong. Also, the tiny town of Brewster didn't put in the new boat ramp and dock either. You should read the sign there the next time you are in town to see who did. ;)

Kinda funny how excited you are MtMuly over 4-6 lb sockey... I would get more excited over a 9 inch crawdad then a 6lb sockeye..... :chuckle:

I'd be excited over a 4-6 lb sockeye. Try 1-4.5 lbers up here. Oh, and I'm not excited, just think it's funny when some post the things they do. :chuckle:

I was below Wells Dam today watched a King get netted into the boat and a Jack or Sockeye kept :dunno:  Now there will be smoke tomorrow but the fish don't now it.

Partial Evacuation of Brewster. Anyone know what that means?

Can't imagine the air quality would be healthy, even if you could get there. We cancelled our trip over for tomorrow.
-
There are boats on the water and I can't figure out why they want to be out there. Visibility is maybe 100' on the water. Lots of people scrambled out with their campers and boats, but there are still some there. Fishing is the last thing on most peoples minds up here now. :twocents:

Got three on Tuesday. Going again tonight in hopes of improving that, but am struggling so far. Here's my buddy Chris with one. What a long-armer!!!!!

I see your point. If I was headed there today/tomorrow, I'd cancel my trip. But, if I was already there, out of harms way, I'd probably fish. UNLESS, authorities were calling for volunteers (which is not likely in this day). The air quality close to the surface of the river is not optimal, but the cool water is probably keeping that warmer smoke several feet aloft. I'd fish until I got a headache ;) To further compound things, those vacationers that are out of harms way, if they're from the west side, they probably can't realistically get home anyway. Hiway 2 is closed. 153 is closed. 20 is closed. Blewit was closed for a while. 90 is closed off and on. That leaves the southern route, or maybe a trip into Canada to get home. If I wasn't fishin there... (if I was stopped from heading west), I'd probably be trying to figure out a different destination out of the smoke/fire's path and lay low for a week of R&R. -And I'd be fishin. I'm a realist. No matter how bad it is in pockets of the Okanogan, life goes on elsewhere. I'll be sure to spend money in that environment when I do go on vacation soon. As that is likely the only thing I can do in that community to support localized losses. While farming, is the main support in that area, tourism will be greatly reduced through the rest of summer. I'm hoping that everyone affected in that area has insurance to cover physical losses, (I can't fathom the thought of losing everything in such a catastrophy).

Fishers on the water are probably in the Wenatchee salmon derby. They didn't cancel the event. We were going to go Sunday thru Tuesday. We cancelled. Feel so bad for all who are involved. We have hunted Libby Creek area for many years. Prayers going out to all...

I was referring to the Brewster Pool area where the fire is. The derby this weekend doesn't include that area.
-
Thank you so much for the correction! Wow, I got some bad info from somewhere, they must have been talking about the one in August . So sorry to have posted a bad opinion.
-
(JOAT) Steve
Those are all good points. I really feel for the locals there. Was planning to fish sat/sun, but wouldn't feel right in light of all the trauma to the region.
-
2 weekends ago we brought home 44 fish. They had already upped the limit to 6. We fished 3 days and had a blast. Headed back over this weekend if we can get over, depends on the road closures from the fire, etc. If not, maybe lake Wenatchee. Had a buddy limit out on nice Sockeye there last weekend. Here's a few pictures. Only saw a few kings caught and they were all natives, but they should start showing up in numbers by the beginning of august. The run peaked earlier this week at over 600,000 sockeye over the Bonneville so they should still be working their way up to the Okanagan for the next few weeks.
All my prayers to the people involved in the fires. Just an awful situation over there. But it looks like people are chipping in and helping each other out in true Washingtonian fashion.
-
Very nice haul there!!
May we ask what you used?
-
I'm headed to Lake Wenatchee tomorrow to target sockeye there for the first time. I've only fished sockeye in Lake Washington and the Fraser River in BC. Any advice for Lake Wenatchee? Any recent reports?
-
I'm heading up to Lake Wenatchee tonight. Gonna fish tomorrow morning.
I'll post a follow-up report, but I have no experience with sockeye or that fishery so I wouldn't count myself a real credible source.
-
Baker Lake for me tomorrow morning! Columbia river next week!
-Steve
-
I fished Saturday, nothing at Brewster, and one sockeye at Lake Wenatchee. Guess last weeks rain pushed them all out. Hope to try Brewster again Thursday or Friday.
-
My son and I fished saturday and sunday at lake Wenatchee. The bite was spotty, but lots of fish on the finder. Between us we boated 10 on Sat, and 7 on Sun. Could have had easy limits, but missed a bunch. They are still firm and VERY tasty, had one for dinner sat night. Didn't weigh them but probably 3.5-4 lbs????
We had a good guide (Grandpa). He knows how to get it done
-
We marked a lot of fish as well. Saw some being caught, but was very spotty. Here is our fish.
-
Anybody fishing the river at all still? Is the bite better there? Im not real familiar with the area, so I am not sure how close the fire was to everything.
-
GAH i'm jealous! We tried for sockeye this year with the same setup on the Columbia river (across from the 300 area) like everyone else, didn't catch a single freaking fish. :bash:
The dams were also letting out a lot of water (why always during the salmon seasons?)
Only had two hits.
One actually stayed on for a couple seconds but got off. The barbless hook rule is killing us.
-
We did pretty good at Brewster over the weekend. The first evening we only had one bite and lost it at the boat. But the next morning we went 9 for 12 on the sockeye
They're still looking pretty good and fishing should be good for another week or 2
