Title: Wondering if any one else has a sick dog.
Post by: Trashmonkey on December 02, 2008, 08:56:31 PM
Just wondering if there's anyone else out there that has a sick dog that has been in or around the slough that splits the Shillapoo unit?

you should take him to the vet.  he might have ingested that blue algae stuff the WDFW was talking about.  if he ingested a lot i think it could kill him...not sure though, but i would go to the vet and maybe get his stomach pumped.

Oh, yeah...I've been to the vet. I've spent a couple thousand at various vets to find out " we have no idea".  They have ruled out parasites, worms, ticks, diabetes, thyroid problems, etc.  Who knows, maybe the water had nothing to do with it.  I just hate to see my dog waste away like he's doing.

I've hunted that slough twice this year, the last time was on nov 11 and my lab showed no ill effects at all. I did remember reading a warning on another forum earlier in the year about dogs getting sick there.

I also heard of some dogs getting Salmon Posining, they went through the same deal.  A bunch of different Vets couldn't figure it out and then one pointed that out gave them meds and they were better.  Any chance your pup got into any?

Very good idea Spence.
Now I'm not saying this for the truth but I'm saying it as I remermber hearing it.

I remember my sister telling me that some that hunt Tillamook bay would feed their dog salmon then take them to the vet for what ever treatment they gave the dogs and that was suppose to do the trick from then on out.

I hunted down at Vancouver Lake and the Shillapoo area a couple times this year with my dog and no effects showing.

Hopefully you can figure it out.

Hey thanks, guys.  I'll take him in and have him run through for Salmon poisoning.  Like I said, he's getting worse.  This really sucks.  He's not crying or wimpering from any pain.  I'm affraid he's just giving up.

What vets have you been to?  That doesn't make sense that they can't figure it out.........

Four years ago, at Shillapo, my lab got into what they think was rat poison.  It took 3 blood transfusions over at Dove Lewis Hospital to bring Her thru it.  Mom retired the Dog after that episode, but she is doing good at 11 and will hopefully go a few more years.

The salmon poisoning would occur if the dog ingested RAW salmon meat.
I did some reading about that area and wonder since there is heavy agriculture taking place near by if your dog drank from a small puddle that was tainted with a strong concentration of some sort of fertilizer or pesticide?
There are many other environmental issues that could cause a problem. Go to the http://refugeforums.com/refuge/index.php
and place a notice in the Washington flyway report to see if you get a hit and then go to their main page area and post another similar thread under gun dog forum.

Well you ever seen a cooked salmon swim by or dead laying on the bank?  ha  Just trying to help the guy out.  The instance in particular I heard about had the same symptoms, 3 or 4 vets had no idea what it was and then one figured it out and bang dog got better.  Anyway please let us know what you find out!  Got your pup in my prayers...

Well, took Thor to another vet and had it confirmed that he has thyroid cancer.  His Calcium levels were off the chart, which is an indicator for cancer.  What really bothers me is that he wont hardly eat.  He went from eating like a horse to eating like a mouse.

So with that being said, we're maintaining here.  I'm looking into options at this time.

Thanks guy's for your concern and advise.  I really appreciate it alot.

Darn it. I'm so sorry! mike and I were talking about our dogs yesterday and how we feel about them as being members of the family. We, as a family, are like gypsies in that we move a lot. Therefore all of my dogs including the one and only cat are all cremated and move with us until we finally decide, "Yep, this is it. We're going to stay".

Well my friend make you old buddy as comfortable as possible and do what ever you have to do. I've been there several times and it is not easy.
