I was scouting this last weekend in Rimrock off FS 1000 and came across a small meadow with a few moose rut pits and I could hear him grunting up the hill about 300 yards away. I stayed in the meadow for a while and listened to see if he was on the move or not. He stayed put and I moved on after a time. I was pretty surprised to see those rut pits.
Has anyone here seen moose in Rimrock before?

Im gonna bet those were elk wallows.
-
I will bet Cattle.
There are cattle all over the 1000rd and every other road right now, and heard them making all sorts of racket when we were up there two weeks ago.

I didnt even think of cattle.....no doubt it was probably cattle.

I've stalked that herd. Must have winded me! It's easy to find em cause the cow bell around the lead cows neck. Thought I was on some hills have eyes horror movie for a second.

I'll go back and see if I can get some pictures of him and those rut pits. Once I got home I listened to countless moose grunts and I'm real sure it was the same noise. I could be totally off base but I'm determined to go back and see what that noise was. I've also heard the EXACT noise when I was hiking in the Quinalt area. I'm not sure if there are range cattle there but it was the same grunting.

This is EXACTLY what it sounded like.

No moose out there either... probably more likely to find moose in the Rimrock, than the Quinalt with all the moose running around the Teanaway

I get all that...(the pits don't disappear after each year). I wondered if I should even post this question. Thanks all.

I wouldn't stress about it. Learn for the experience and move on :twocents:

Probably cattle! Bulls will dig pits and make that same sound. I have one right now that is doing it.
-
Cattle really do make virtually the same noise at times. Usually when making a call long distance, especially after separation.

My bull is busy digging pits and "belching" for the ladies. He makes that sound right after testing the pee from one of my cows that is a day or so from going into heat.
