Title: New bow help
Post by: fc2038 on December 03, 2008, 11:07:26 AM
Well I am coming back to sticks and strings after 4 years using the old smoke pole. I have been out checking out the bows out there and like the x-force and drenalin, but I have not been able to get my hands on a alpamax. that is one other bow I want to look at. If you have any of these bows tell me what the pros and cons of these bows that you have found while hunting with them. i am trying to narrow it down to ONE. I want to get them all but we all know about that.  Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

does anybody own a x-force ss? If so how is it compared to the x-force havent found an ss to shoot

I see you are in Eatonville, I know Rainier Archery will get boos and hisses from some of the folks on this sight but I know they have the Hoyt Alpha max 32 & 35 that they will let you shoot. The Hoyt is a much nicer bow to shoot IMO than the PSE X-Force. They don't carry PSE, but they also have Bowtech, Mathews, Mission and Elite you can shoot and compare.

I second the alphamax, I have a alphamax 35.. great bow, super quiet, fast, insanely accurate and very lightweight, not to mention tough as nails..... and thats not just because I shoot hoyt.. they make a amazing bow and always come out with new technology thats as good as it gets, just remember.. they test the risers for 1500 dryfires and the limbs for 1000..... and after all that if its still good then its a hoyt....... how do you think ANY other bow company would do?

 :bdid:

I purchased my first mathews from them when I first moved here 11 years ago.   :bdid:  Once the $$$ was in their hands, the service was terrible.  I have never been back, and I would have asked for my $$$ back if I thought it was worth the trouble.

Bowtech's doin that in their sleep huh, those must be some pretty wild Bowtech dreams, just joshin ya archery288 but I couldn't help myself.   :chuckle: By the way, have you seen the latest crackerized Admiral up on AT?  Wow, that thing is cool.  To the original OP, I'm in the same boat as you looking for a new bow.  Check out a couple of my posts here titled something like, "My quest for a new bow" parts 1 and 2.  There should be a little bit of info in there for ya.  However, I would strongly recommend that you go out and shoot as many as you can.  What feels good to me may not to you since we all have different body styles.  Having said all of this, the Alphamax is still at the top of my list.  I think on Friday I am going to buy a Mathews however.  This one will be for my daughter for Christmas, the Mathews aka Mission Menace.

wapiti-- how about  the hoyt kobalt? thats the bow my wife shoots and its awesome for a female... also good on you for the alphmax. I ordered mine today.. under 500 heh    :)
Title: Re: New bow help
Post by: WonkyWapiti on December 03, 2008, 09:50:37 PM
I am going with the Menace because she is needing a super low poundage draw bow.  I'm working with her making her do pushups every morning and evening to improve her strength.  (I'm a meanie).  The menace I think goes down to 15 or 16 pounds.  She was pretty bummed when I had her trying some higher poundage bows last weekend so this Menace is gonna be a total surprise for her on Christmas morning.

Post by: Hoytstaffshooter83 on December 03, 2008, 09:58:15 PM
fun stuff, also have her do rows with a band or light weight, the main muscles for pulling a bow are the rhomboids (middle of your back) and the rotator cuff muscles.....
Title: Re: New bow help
Post by: fc2038 on December 03, 2008, 10:46:35 PM
Yea the top two that I like right now are (and this coule change) the PSE x-force and the mathews drenalin. I have not had the opportunity to try the alphamax. I have shot bowtechs (not all of them) and just about everything else under the sun except that alphamax. I am going to try and giver a launch this weekend. What do you boys prefer I believe it is the 35 and 32 correct?
Title: Re: New bow help
Post by: WonkyWapiti on December 04, 2008, 01:10:38 AM
I'm still not sure which one I preferred between the 32 and the 35.  I initially thought the 32 but as I replayed everything over in my head and thought more about the 35 the more I thought I need to shoot them both again.  When I pick up my daughter's bow this week I will probably shoot them again.

Post by: JBar on December 04, 2008, 02:53:28 AM
The Alpha 35 seems to draw smoother and hold a little nicer than the 32. I actually ordered the Mathews Reezen 7.0 best of both worlds IMO a little more speed and the smooth draw of a single cam. Might want to give that one a try if you have not already.
Title: Re: New bow help
Post by: Hoytstaffshooter83 on December 04, 2008, 08:32:36 AM
I love the 35..... its perfect, I shot the rezen yesterday.... I hope you dont have a super long draw length.. that 340IBO is great but good luck gettin a good group anywhere near that speed.. its not all about speed like so many guys buy based on....

Actually I do have a short draw length, I am hoping to maintain my current 267 fps with less pounds of draw weight. I'm not a speed freak by any means and would rather have good braodhead flight and accuracy than a super sonic bow.

Jbar---- so how do you like that Reezen? What do you think of it? I thought it had a little to much hand shock. :twocents: have you hunted with it yet. I thought it was nice but something about it just didn't feel right and I really do not know what it was..

Have not gotten mine yet, only shot the demo bow. I ordered the 7.0, I wanted the extra BH. I thought the same thing about the hand shock but I had a sims s-coil put on and it eliminated 95% of the vibration. I liked how smooth it came back even with the draw length 2 inches too long and the slightly more radical cam design. I put an arrow through the crono with the demo bow set at 70# 416 g arrow at 304 fps. Little fast for me but at 27 inch draw and 65# it should be a good shooter.  Can't wait to get it set up and shooting, I would guess I should have it before the end of the month.

they have been around longer, but not making compounds the whole time, dont you recall the break in the mid 90's till about 2000? hoyt was still spittin em out, I guess you can count bear/jennings.. but I wouldnt.....one day brent one day you will see why your $330 bow is not the same as a upper end bow.. on so many levels really.........

I was checking the Hoyt website again after your last post Hoytstaff and good thing I did.  I didn't realize the Trykon Jr went down to 10 lbs.  That may be the bow I end up getting my daughter.  I have some more research to do.

Wonky,   How old is your daughter. You might of said but I did not pay attention. I have a 4 year old and a three year old. The 4 year old is getting a little fred bear recurve bow (cheapo). he has been talking about it since the cricket single shot he got during easter. He loves to shoot with dad!!!! Hopefully he will like to shoot the bow too.

You wouldn't count when Fred Bear started out making archery products? And my $330 bow is actually a $650 bow, but I only paid $274 for it. How does that compare to your special Hoyt pricing.  :chuckle:

She is 11 but doesn't have alot of upper body strength.  I had her trying a 20 lb Parker and she couldn't do it.  I'm sure if I worked with her on her body mechanics I could get her to do the 20.  I see the Trykon Jr starts at 10 lbs which is a lower weight than the Menace.  I like the idea of an easy pull for her so she doesn't get discouraged and can work up.  She has gone out bowhunting with me the last couple years and wants her own bow so badly.  She has been shooting a cheapo kids stick bow that I bought her two years ago and she has been shooting the loaner bows at the local range.

I did not know it went that low, if so how can you go wrong, also like I said focus on the muscles utilized in drawing a  bow
Title: Re: New bow help

Does anyone know if I can swap out the limbs on the Trykon Jr as I have a need for her to increase her weight, ie starting out at 10-20, swap out to 20-30, then swap out to 30-40, etc etc?

I also forgot to say that the $900 is the average for a stock 32 or 35.. the one I paid $489 for is not stock............   8) mathematically it looks like my deal was just a little better on a much much much x15  better bow

With those numbers you paid 54% of retail and I paid 42% of retail. Yep, you got the better deal.  :chuckle:
Title: Re: New bow help
Post by: Hoytstaffshooter83 on December 05, 2008, 09:28:58 AM
Indeed I did, but acutually the bow the way I ordered it was more in the 11-1200 range so that number would be more inflated
Title: Re: New bow help
Post by: Antlershed on December 05, 2008, 09:29:56 AM
So it comes out about the same. At $1160 you would have paid 42% of retail.  ;)
Title: Re: New bow help
Post by: Hoytstaffshooter83 on December 05, 2008, 09:35:47 AM
im curious to how you came up with your stats?  if your bow retails for $650 and you paid $279 for it.. you saved $371 off of retail.. if mine even at $900 was retail and I paid $489 I saved $411 of retail...... btu since mine was custom and we will go with 1150 retail.. I paid $489 thats $661 off retail..........
Title: Re: New bow help
Post by: Antlershed on December 05, 2008, 09:46:00 AM
You can look at it like that, or you can look at percent savings (which seems logical). So, if a bow retails for $650 and I paid $274 for it, you take 274/650 and you get 42.15%, so I saved 57.85% off of retail. Your bow at $900, you take 489/900 and you get 54.33%, so you only saved 45.67%, hence I had a bigger percentage savings.

Let me make an extreme example....I'm buying something that normally costs $10 and you are buying something that costs $100k. If I pay $1 for mine, I saved 90%, but only $9. If you pay $90k, sure you saved $10k, but you only saved 10%. I would say I got a better deal.

I am as well, thats only between brent and I.. and I see your point, and the extreme example certainly was, if your going by percentage im my head the reason yours came out on top was because your bow retails for roughly $300 cheaper then mine? and the diff in discount overall was not that much.... agreed?

They have what they call their Big Shot Program, which is what I was on. It really is nothing special. You work at a sporting goods store, you fill out a piece of paper, sign an agreement, check the boxes of what bow and accessories you want, give them your credit card number, and they send you the goods.

You guys are killing me. I think you all got screwed  :chuckle: I paid $120 for my Bear Element on Ebay and it came with a new hardcase . It was sold by a Lynnwood pawn shop of all places and shoots 306 fps at 70 lbs. and was in New condition.  I put on a Cobra fiber optic sight, A matching quiver, Easton St Epic arrows and have about $260 total in the bow. It shoots as good and smooth as any Hoyt, Matthews, etc. The only thing more inflated than the overpriced bows are the over inflated egos that seem to represent most of the comments here. My $260 bow will kill a animal as dead as any $1200 bow any day of the week. I used to laugh at the dorks that were shooting bows in the early 90's that were 25-40 lb target bows shooting carbon arrows with stabilizers that were 2 to 3 feet long. I was shooting a 85 lb Ben Pearson spoiler shooting 2213 xx75 arrows, I was shooting as good or better than they were. No offense guys I LOVE my Bear Bow and I know Most people love their Bear Bows as well. all you have to do it google them for the results. The only thing that sucks on the Bear is the finish it tends to chip if you are rough with it but does not affect the performance of the bow. It has a machined riser just like the rest, and compression molded limbs, The cams are every bit as nice as the higher priced bows (and probably made by the same suppliers)  So if you want to pay $1200 for a Mathhews or Hoyt go ahead, I'll take my $260 Bear and kill as many animals as the guy who spent $1200, and I'll have $1000 bucks to buy even more hunting stuff.

Its all in what you like.

interesting stance, its all in opinion im sure, and your right, you can kill with your cheap bow as well as I can with my 1300 hoyt.. however where it really matters is what seperates the 300 dollar bow from the 1300 vantage elite or my pro elite, serious comp is where it really shows how accurate, smooth and forgiving a bow can be, when your trying to hit a target the size of a dime all day long you need every advantage you can, and you can not in any way say your bow could shoot as consistent and as accurate as my pro elite or vantage elite.... not going to happen..... but on a target the size of a deer or elk, all day long it will get the job done, no doubt in my mind

LOL! Dude I can laugh because I have been shooting longer than you have been alive. Hoyt, I was you at 24 too and had every right to be. I was shooting a Ben Pearson Spoiler bow (that was the best and fastest bow at the time)  that was set between 85 and 95 lbs at 65% letoff. Most men couldn't even pull it back and I was out shooting the wimps shooting the 25 lb to 50 lb target bows like yours. It was a fact not myth that I would outshoot them. I had 4 robin hoods by the time I was your age and try to avoid them now because it is a waste of money and arrows. I don't have the time to shoot as much as I used to because of family obligations (young kids). BTW I'm also a Engineer so telling me that your $1200 bow is somehow sooooo much better that another bow is complete hogwash, there differences are sooo minute that one cannot judge a bow soley off price, its in the brace height and and cam design I beieve mine is at 7.5" Which is right there with the expensive bows . The technology to build your bow and mine are based on the same principles. No one is saying the Hoyts and Mathews are bad bows, they aren't but saying that because Bear bows are Cheap because they are less expensive or not tight grouping is crap, its all based on brace height and how long the arrow stays on the string before it is let go. So before you get all puffed up and strutting like a peacock check your facts before spewing off about how much YOU know over everybody else. I respect your loyalty to Hoyt but you need to respect others who have been shooting much longer than yourself.  I like your spirit though.  BTW my 15 yr old son shoots a Hoyt and it is a good bow.
