My Bear Rifle is Completed!!! I had some issues tweaking a load to work (actually finding powder), but now it rocks and rolls...
Rifle is a .458 SOCOM AR-15. I think it'll work. 10 rounds in the mag and one in the chamber. 11 rounds - 350 grain TSX .458 caliber...

Check out my new video... It's not really that good of a video but it shows a functioning .458 SOCOM AR-15.

I've been scouting a bit. I've only seen three bears this year. A mamma and two cubs. I can't wait till August...

Hope you have a nice name for that cannon. I call mine, Bruiser.
-
 Should get the job done. The only thing you might want to do is switch out that grip at some point. Ergo is really good choice for grips.
-
What was your reason for choosing this over the 50bw?
-
nice rifle i have a 6.8 spc. looks to have a little recoil to it :chuckle:
-
looks like fun, Ive thought about building a bear shooter with the spare lower I built..

And do you have to use a different buffer spring when you throw a manly cartridge in there?
It's a good looking rig. Thing of having a 300aac deer gun just for shi'ts and grins.

I was leaning towards "The Hammer". I know not very original, but still...

I have to lay low for awhile on the expendatures...

The 450 Bushmaster, the 50 Beowulf, and the .458 SOCOM are all very similar. For the application, they would all work. If I recall correctly, my main motivation for going with the .458 was parts commonality. The only thing different from a 5.56 AR and the .458 SOCOM AR is the bolt and the barrel. The 5.56 magazines, buffer and buffer spring all work with the SOCOM. I believe there are more .458 bullets as well vs. .452 for the Bushmaster and .500 for the 50 Beowulf. The .458 seemed a better choice for me. Your mileage may vary...

I have a 6.8mm SPC II as well. The .458 does kick more :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
6.8 is on top, .458 SOCOM in on the bottom

I'm taking a trip to Alaska this upcoming August and the 6.8 seemed a little light for Grizzly defense. I think I'll be good with the .458. My buddy is packing a 3.5" 12 gauge. We're going fishing, but we don't want to be grizzly food.

The .458 SOCOM was designed to us all stock 5.56 parts except the .458 bolt and the .458 barrel. I've never been a fan of the 300AAC BlackOut. I'm totally biased, but I think you'd be better off with a 6.8mm SPC II. Just my :twocents:

The .458 Socom is the exact reason I wanted to get an AR. A buddy of mine took an awesome bear with his last year and a year or two before that took a really nice rosey bull. Earlier this year I got a steal on a S&W M&P 15 chambered in 5.56. Seeing your completed rifle just fuels the fire to get myself a .458 upper. I was thinking of going with a rock river arms upper. Any suggestions?
Sweet Rifle!!!!

Thanks man. I'm liking it so far...
I think you'd be good with a RRA upper.

My 458 upper is a Rock River and they did send me different buffer springs to use with the 458. I haven't shot it since I've owned it, 2 years. Safe Queen. I paid $750 for the complete upper.

Is yours a custom upper? and is that an 18" barrel? I'd really like a longer barrel than 16" which is what comes on the RRA .458 uppers.

My rifle was home built.
My upper is a Mega Arms forged receiver with a Black Hole Weaponry 16" carbine barrel. I have a 15" Samson Evolution handguard on it (wish I would have went with the 12.37"). The lower is a Mega Arms forged as well. It has the Magpul ACS-L stock (wish I would have went with the CTR).
I'm not sure if anyone is making 18" barrels. The licensed players are Tromix , Teppo Jutsu, SBR, SSK and RRA. The UN-licensed players are Wilson Combat and Black Hole Weaponry. If I had to do it over, I would go with one of the licensed vendors...

Awesome looking firearm. I'm jealous. I'd love to get one but we have stupid things like food and mortgage to get instead! :chuckle:

Looks good now you just have to find a bear

Sighted in the rifle today. I was able to shoot 2" groups at 50 yards from a sitting position with my elbows on my knees. Not great, buy not bad either. I made another video as well. This thing is the s_h_i_t...

Yeah, no limit on rounds for state hunters in WA. Some of the WA tribes have 5 round limits for semi's.
