Title: Do you get your trophys measured?
Post by: WA_BnC_OM on December 03, 2008, 10:11:34 PM
Give your trophy the honor of what he lived and what he grew by getting him listed in the record books for future hunters and family members to enjoy for lifetimes.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that giving them a score gives them honor because you are suggesting that people who don't have them scored, have no respect for the animals they hunt.  In my experience, the people who are really into score show very little if any respect for those animals that wouldn't score well.  To me score does nothing but make a good story for someone trying to brag.  I am not knocking the scoring system but to me a forken horn is just as adrenaline pumping as a monster, and I have shot them both and everything in between.  If you want to show honor for the animal, how about getting him mounted and not just throw the horns in a pile in the garage.  If hunting is done 100% legal and ethical, that is the most honor you could give the animals you hunt.  Stray away from any rule or be unethical in the kill or transportation then no matter what you do after that the honor is gone. Just my : :twocents:

:yeah: I do taxidermy to try to capture my trophies as they were in life to admire for the rest of my life. I have had a couple scored, and I am fairly good at scoring. But if someone doesn't like having their hornes measured I can understand that too. Mine is bigger than yours...not! :chuckle: :chuckle:

hey bow-n-head i to do taxidermy but I do it only for myself and family.  I admire the animals I hunt so much that I spent over ten thousand dollars to go to school just so I can put the animals i hunt on my wall.  I love that feeling of mounting up an animal that you harvested and being able to see it and relive it all the time.

I agree with furbearer365, some of the best Trophies I own have the smallest Horns. It comes down to being satisfied with what you get and how it was gotten.

Not generally, although I did have a nice mule deer buck I took in 1977 with a muzzleloader scored in 1999 and recorded in the Longhunter Record Book.  It scored 151 2/8.  Scorer asked when it was taken and when I told him, he said it was too bad I didn't get it scored in 1977/78, as I probably lost several inches over the years.

One interesting fact was the inside spread was 14 2/8....so you can get a sense of how tall he was.  He has the distinction of still being the narrowest spread in the book for all entered typical mule deer.....and until another larger  buck was taken in Washington in 1999 and recorded, it was the unofficial state record muzzleloading typical mule deer buck from 1977-1999.

It was also my first deer........

I score them on my own.  I get a kick out of it.  I have a couple pronghorn that came close to B&C lifetime, but that's pretty much it.  If I thought they would have made it I would have had them "officially" scored.  Never bothered looking into the state book for them.

I have a really hard time entering anything into a record book that has no way of knowing which animals were killed fair chase and which ones were poached etc etc.  :dunno:

True, there are a few bad apples that get by but for the most part it is a self-policing circle.  People know people and word spreads quickly if there are entries that are deemed questionable.  They are investigated and all entries from bad apples are removed and they are prohibited from ever entering another animal.  It's black and white.

For P&Y or B&C you must complete a Fair Chase Affidavit (with witness signatures) stating that you hunted and harvested the animal legally under the rules of Fair Chase:

The term “Fair Chase” shall not include the taking of animals under the following conditions:

-Helpless in a trap, deep snow or water, or on ice.
-From any power vehicle or power boat.
-By “jacklighting” or shining at night.
-By the use of any tranquilizers or poisons.
-While inside escape-proof fenced enclosures.
-By the use of any power vehicle or power boats for herding or driving animals, including use of aircraft to land alongside or to communicate with or direct a hunter on the ground.
-By the use of electronic devices for attracting, locating or pursuing game or guiding the hunter to such game, or by the use of a bow or arrow to which any electronic device is attached.
-Any other condition considered by the Board of Directors as unacceptable.

The fair chase concept does, however, extend beyond the hunt itself; it is an attitude and a way of life based in a deep-seated respect for wildlife, for the environment, and for other individuals who share the bounty of this vast continent’s natural resources.

I have measured a couple of my own, but the only one I have bothered to have officially scored was my stepdad's whitetail rack that he took in 1982.  When he died I inherited it, so I took it to the Show here in the Tri Cities and had it scored.
188 2/8
Made B&C.  Missed the "All Time" book by less than 2 inches.

I have never had anything officially scored, and i don't think scoring has anything to do with honoring the animal. I do have a few of my favorite bucks that i plack mounted and of the 6 i have the one that catches most peoples eyes and generates the most conversation is a 3x3 whitetail with a 22" spread and 9" eye guards that would "score" the lowest of them all. Numbers don't mean much to me, but pictures and stories do.

Hey K., this is Matt Y.  Good to see you on here.

How did you guys do this year?  I got one with my bow in Sept. and took Dad up last weekend and he shot a little buck with his rifle (he drew mult-season).

I guess my answer is "sometimes."  Actually, when you score it, I guess.   :)
