Title: feeling uncertain
Post by: derk3687 on July 17, 2014, 10:06:09 PM: so this will be my second bear hunting season after a very late start last year I shouldn't even consider that an attempt. I have been scouting an area of GMU 460 since January and ive only gotten one picture of a small bear. I have found a lot of blackberry bushes, scat all over the road and off, prints in the mud. im starting to feel like im not setting up in a good spot. maybe im just getting jitters before the season opens. so I am curious as to what route yall would take. maybe find another spot or change gmus this late in the game :dunno:. or stick it out and hope for the best. there are bear in the area that's a given but I feel like im chasing a single bear haha.

Post by: coyotecrazy on July 17, 2014, 10:56:46 PM: If you have every part of the pie there, tracks, scat, berries, etc, I would stick it out. You are bound to run into a bruin. Stay positive and consistent. You will connect. That'll be another $500 :)

Unfortunately some of the best berries are in 10 year clear cuts which you can't see into for sh*t. If there isn't a high enough point in your area to sit up and look down into the blackberries, take a tree stand up into one of the trees the loggers left so you can get a good vantage downward into the berries. If there is scat around, berries on the bush, and thick brush, you'll eventually see one sneaky snaking around down there.

This is only one way to go about it, but it might help you.

That'll be 1 bear summer sausage when you get it.

it's on an old road that has 2 huge dirt mounds blocking any access. Plus I have it in the metal lock box. Pretty sure no one is getting that thing.

Post by: AKBowman on July 22, 2014, 11:04:24 PM: In My experience tank traps won't stop people from driving where they are not supposed to in quads making it easy for them to bring in tools that would allow for them to take your camera. That and I don't want anyone to see my cameras just like I don't want them to find my stands. They may have just walked through the area without thinking twice but now that they saw your camera they may think it's a good place to hunt.

I always seem to get more pictures of bears when I set up in the timbered creek bottoms between two cuts or at the bottom of a older reproducible stand. You can see where they plow through the blackberries making tunnels and they will use these same points to enter the berry patches it seems because access may be tough otherwise...even for a bear. Set up a camera on one of those spots and you will probably get more pics than in a road.
