Getting more excited everyday that passes. My dad, buddy, and I are headed to the Eagle Caps for a pack hunt. We are getting packed in and then it is on us to find them.

Archery or rifle?
Good luck! It's beautiful country! Take lots of pics

I have spent a lot of time backpacking in the Eagle Cap over the years. One of my favorite places.
What trail head are you going in from?
Are you hunting deer or elk?
-
Just came out of there this weekend, left the horses at home this time. First time backpacking - wanted to check the trail out before I took them in. Glad I walked it first :bdid:. Have fun

who ya going with? We went in last year and had a blast!

I am assuming based on the timing of the post, Archery gear for Bucks or Bulls? Couple words of encouragement, dont get discouraged. Shoot straight, and take tons of pics. Some of the coolest country goin IMO. I have only ever hunted off my back, getting ponied in, and more importantly out, will be nice! Good luck, and heres a couple pics to get ya goin...

some more pics to get ya excited

To keep your excitement going....

Sorry for the delay. Some rough S#*@ to deal with lately.
My dad was killed in an auto accident driving back from scouting up in the Caps for our hunt :'(
Anyways, we will still be going in to the Caps for the hunt. Not only because that would be what my dad would want me to do but also because he had dropped off 2 trail cams while he was out there.
We are going with Del Sol Outfitters, doing an Archery hunt. Now just 2 of us.
Thank you for the words of encouragement and the pics. I was able to obtain his digital camera and written notes that he had taken while out scouting. Some great photos of gorgeous country and he had seen a herd of 25-30 elk.

Sorry to hear that. Stay strong.

I am sorry to hear what happen. I am sure your dad will be with you every step of the way.

Sorry, that's horrible...... :'(

Wow Dblstks, very sorry to hear that. Thinking of you and your family. Keep us posted on your hunt and know that your father is looking down smiling.
-
So sorry to hear about your dad. Hope you can make this trip a memorial to him.
-
So sorry to hear of your loss. That's terrible. Stay strong and make it a great trip your dad would be proud of. Really sorry.
-
Man, I`m sorry to hear about your dad, my condolences. I hope you have a great hunt.

Thanks for the kind words. I know it will be a challenging hunt in many ways but I hope to make it a memorable one.
-
I feel for you brother . Your father will be with you . It's great your honoring him on this hunt . Best of wishes. Take a monster !
-
A wise man once told me, "It's not something you get over, it's something you learn to live with". Just know that he will be with you and try to enjoy the hunt. Good luck.
-
oh man sorry to hear that. That is some bad news no one should have to hear.. Just a thought. If your dad is cremated maybe you can still take him along or spread his ashes there. Sounds like he woulda liked that.
-
spin05 good thinking. I'm still kicking the idea around.
-
So sorry for your loss. Hope your hunt is special. Del Sol has a great reputation.
-
Dblstks, I think its safe to say, a lot of us were pulling for you on your hunt. How'd did your hunt go? Tag soup or not, would love to hear how you're doing and of your experience to the Eagle Caps. My dad and I bowhunt the Eagle Caps each year and it can be as therepuetic as it is grueling, but nontheless, a great place to be.
Hope you had a great experience and are doing well.

I am very sorry for the delay on this and probably is a little weird that I now send a reply. But life happens and I have finally been getting back into the forum.
As for this 2014 trip we came back without meat. But lots of memories and I even was able to recover one of the trail cams my dad had set up. Pretty crazy to find it out there. Like I had mentioned I was able to get some notes on the location and happened across it. Some pics on it but nothing major.
I did get a shot on a nice little 5x5 but the shot was low. Closest I had ever come to getting an arrow into a big game animal so to say the least it was exciting.
That country out there is breathtaking! I would highly recommend doing it if possible.
For a follow up as well, we went back out the next year (2015) and my hunting partner was able to arrow a nice bull. I think it was a 6x6. Best part was, he shot him about 100 yards off the trail. We carried the meat to the trail so the ponies could come pick it up.
I would go back yearly if the budget could afford it. The price is not cheap but the memories of chasing bugling elk is something you cannot put a price tag on. Hopefully I can get back out there.
Oh, and the Del Sol Outfitters is a quality group. Nothing but good things to say about them.
Thanks for reading and sorry again for the delay.

Thanks for the follow-up. Glad you went back in 2015. The Caps are awesome. I was thinking about what it would be like to have your experience. Certainly sad to lose a father. For me, it would make the area he had just been in sacred or something like that.
