I am finding myself in need of new shades. I have always bought cheap $20-25 sets but beings I now drive for a living I am wondering if there is a benefit to spending the money for the higher end ones. (Native, Oakley, WileyX, etc.) Has anyone really noticed a difference or is it just the name your paying for? 8)
-
I run Oakley Full Jackets with polarized lenses. Oakleys fit my face really well and they are great quality (in my opinion)
-
I take much better care of my oakleys than when i bought cheapos... :chuckle:
-
Absolutely a difference. Spend the money on a nice pair of Oakleys that fit well and take VERY good care of them. The better UV protection and clarity are well worth it. I see a huge difference in clarity with them.
-
I believe not all sunglasses are equal. Check out Dragon Alliance Shield Polarized. Great quality lower price than some other bigger names
-
Bought some Wiley's a few years back. Liked the foam insert for riding, other than that, Never Again!!
Oakley's now.
-
Maui Jims for me, but mine are prescription and polarized. Was glad that I splurged on them.
-
I have had very good luck with Costa Del Mar's for fishing and driving. If you drive for a living be absolutely sure you get POLARIZED!!! There is no contest compared to non polarized especially with the rain we get on sunny days. Misty rain, downpour, tire spray, wet pavement glare when the sun comes back out, polarized will make a very noticeable difference

Costa Del Mar's yep all that love mine

I have a pair of Wiley X and love them. They're perscription sunglasses and I can see better than my standard glasses. When I can afford a second pair, Im going to get ones with clear lenses and use for outdoor activities and as safety glasses.
-
Maui Jims for me, but mine are prescription and polarized. Was glad that I splurged on them.
I have a couple pairs of Maui Jim's Honolulu Bay (titanium) one with grey polarized lenses one with amber polarized lenses. They weigh next to nothing. And one pair of Wassup greys polarized.
They have awesome warrantee sand great customer service.
I like amber polarized much better for fishing.
The blue Costa Del Mars are pretty good for fishing as well.
If you want an ok pair of inexpensive glasses, try Sun Cloud polarized amber lenses. I have a pair I keep in my glove box for emergencies. You can get them for about $50 - $60.
-
TFeather,
I'm in the same boat and have had the same question. The whole family has nice glasses except me with my cheapos. Maybe it is time to break down and get something better. Let me know what you end up with.
-
What's wrong with the ones in the Walmart fishing section?
Mine has a cool spider on the side :chuckle:
-
I bought a pair of Smith Optics Guides choice and really like them polarized and mirrored work great on the water.
-
Can't stand cheap glasses. I have a stigmatism so I'm pretty picky about my vision.I have a handful, but my favorites are a set of polarized Arnettes.
Once you get quality shades you will wonder how you ever got along without them. If your military, LE or first responder Oakley gives you about half off.

I can hold on to a pair of gas station shades for a couple years or so. Anything more than $25 and they're lost or scratched or sat on within a month.
-
Oakley X10. I love them. I find that I tend to be careful with nicer ones
The cheaper ones I was always loosing and didn't give a crud about.
Polarized are the way to go. :twocents:

Yes! Go to your local optician and buy quality, not "name".
-
Definitely worth having good sunglasses. The difference after a long day and when driving is like cheap binocs vs quality. I bought some Maui Jim's in 2008 and I've found when you have good ones you tend to take care of them and not leave em laying around to get lost. Polarized is a must in my book and is irreplaceable on the water. Lens material is a consideration as well. My Maui Jim's have a glass/Pyrex type material that's very scratch resistant and which helps especially around salt water. They do weigh a little more, but not enough to matter. Try several types on, I like oaklys, but they don't fit me well. I've been thinking of picking up either a different style of Maui's or Costa Del Mar. Find some you like, fit well and don't look back. You won't regret it

:)good sun glasses are a great buy and useful, just as important as a good scope. I like Panoptix.

That's where I get my sunglasses too.
I'm tough on glasses. I can keep a pair of those until they fall apart but buy a $100 pair and I lose them, drop and break them, scratch the heck out of the lenses etc.
-
I've had a set of Serengeti for years. I've had the frames replaced by Corning and it was very reasonable. The glasses are incredible.

Same here, cheapos last forever and pricey ones done in a week or two! Doc says the cheapies and the scratched up cheapo safety glasses at work are very hard on the eyes. Guess I'll splurge, maybe spend more than the usual $4.99!!!
-
4 bucks at Walmart. Polarized. Buy lots of extras at that price.
-
Can't go wrong with Oakley, I've had at least 10 different styles of theres and I was just looking at a pair of there camo Flak Jackets at Cabela's today
-
Maui Jims hands down. You will take of a more quality set much better.Worth every cent. Clear,no distortion,no eye strain.and you forget you are wearing them
-
Oakley all day , baby !!! Battle tested , soldier approved.
-
My first set of Maui Jim's lasted me 8 years, going on year 5 for my current set. They are AWESOME and yes there is a HUGE difference. I will say that you should shop around. If you are a Government Worker (or veteran) check out GOVX they are awesome. If you are a Vet or in Public Safety check out the oakley Stand Issue site (glasses are considerably cheaper). My only issue is that my Maui Jim's take a beating in the back of a Fire Truck, so I am actually in the market for a set of oakley's for work only.
spend $300 bucks on a pai of sunglasses, and you will be SHOCKED how long they last and how you never seem to lose them!
-
There is a difference between Berkley and Oakley plastic lens and a real pair of Maui Jim with glass lens. Don't use your t shirt to clean either :bdid:
-
Good glasses are mandatory.
I only buy GLASS lenses, unless they're for shooting/active sports.
My fishing and driving glasses are Smith Optics and Maui Jims.
Polarized glass.
Try Costco for Mauis.

I agree. As someone who has worn cheapo safety glasses every day at work for the last 20 years, it is definately easier on the eyes to have some optical quality lenses.
All you have to do to prove it is drive into the sun for a while with 3.99 glasses then switch to a good pair. Difference is noticeable.
-
I bought my first pair of quality prescription sunglasses this year. I went with Oakley Half Jackets with prescription black iridium polarized lenses. Incredible to say the least! Best investment I've made in awhile...they are sharper than my everyday standard glasses. Spendy though with the prescription lenses..

As a paramedic firefighter I found out that polarized glasses are great for everything but looking at a cardiac monitor led screen. They don't jive together. So I too have a pair just for on duty. Non polarized.

:yeah:
That and digital displays on gas pumps and ATM machines have to take the polarized glasses off for that
-
And fish finders.
-
And fish finders.
Huh? I have worn polarized glasses only for the past 30 years while fishing and have never had a problem reading a fish finder :dunno: even if it's raining and the screen is wet! Black and white to the new color units I haven't had that issue. Now, I have had people in the back of my boat with "polarized" sunglasses on that couldn't see the fish cruising in the shallows that I could, even when I pointed my rod tip at it, so some of it could be due to lens quality and or tint color?! Keep in mind in Washington, the same color tint works differently depending on weather. I run the blue or green tint when it's high and bright and the smoke or amber tint when it's raining or heavy clouds. I also run the Costa Del Mars and am hooked for life!
-
Maybe my glasses are weird...
-
?????Mine are fine with my fish finder and gas pump and ATM.

It's not that I cannot see them it just distorts to view a little and makes a "fuzzy" view. It may just be my eyes, or the construction of the glasses just kind of a nuisance when looking at these types of items. :twocents:

Well it's still an interesting perspective, thanks for sharing

It's not your eyes, light waves align in both vertical and horizontal patterns. When you have a body of water or flat reflective surface, the horizontal light waves compound each other which causes intense glare.
Polarized coatings block the horizontal light waves. LCD screens use horizontal waves as well. So your polarized glasses will block some of the horizontal light waves. If they do no do this, your polarized coating is weak or worn off. Though some people with eye issues this can be amplified to excessive, polarized glasses would not be in your benefit. A mirror coating on an Amber or Blue lens (mirror coating darken the lens so a lighter color that filters light works well) might work better for you.
Good polarized glasses use injection molding and the polarizing layer is in between the Glass or NXP Polyurethane. These two are substantially clearer (and expensive) and the polarizing layer can't be wiped off or scratched.
Cheaper inexpensive glasses use a bending polycarbonate or acrylic, and the polarizing layer is on the outside where it can and will fade or be wiped off if not careful.
These make inexpensive safety glasses as well, but scratch easily.
Be careful which ones you choose from the $50 - $200 range.
$50 - $70 for a polycarbonate or acrylic set of glasses is a good price mark. Anything more, you are only paying for the name for the same $50 - $70 glasses.
Oakley was notorious for this. Their quality has increased substantially in the last 10 years.
-
if you have vision issues (need glasses) like me, i would recommend a good full frame wrap (like rayban) and get a set of current perscription + polorized lenses. great for shooting and stream fishing too. The nice part of these is down line when script changes, you can reuse the "nice" frame. If you like shields i have had Solar Bats in years past, they allow a lens under the shield and have many colors to adapt to frame for situations, while still allowing perscription under.
-
I would look past Ray Ban they are not near the quality that they once were. I wore Ray Ban for over 30 years and the last couple of pair were flat out garbage not worth $16.00 much less the $ 160.00 I paid for them. Maui Jim and Oakley are both very good. My most recent pair has been REVO and I am very pleased.
Anything with good scratch resistant lenses that block all of the UV rays should be good and it doesn't have to be a name brand. You only have two eyes so do what you must to protect them.
-
My company pays for 100% of our safety equipment, including safety glasses. So we all wear the 3M safety/sunglasses. We order the from Uline, but you can pick them up at Lowes for around $25 bucks. They are comfortable and polarized. I used to buy high end but I couldn't wear thema t work they just got beat to hell.

I am really hard on my glasses. I broke my Maui Jim's twice (same pair both times, I have three pairs) and they are titanium!
I sent them in and they repaired the frames for free and even put new lenses in for no charge.
-
I have worn oakley, and native non prescription and really liked them especially the native. But my old eyes are prescription full time now so I broke down and got prescription sunglasses too. This time around I got WileyX they come with a foam insert for biking. Could be used for motor or pedal power. I ride a bicycle quite a bit and it really helps keep the wind/dust/bugs out of the eyes. BUT if you aren't moving and working hard they will fog over pretty quick with the insert in place.
This is my first run at prescription sunglasses. Wish I had the $$$ to afford a few different ones as I would like 2-3 styles to choose from depending on what I am doing. With prescription if you get all the add on features, polarized (gotta have that), scratch resistant (gotta have that) etc. it gets expensive really fast.

In 2001 I bought a set of guides choice (originally action optics, now smith) I broke the frame around 2005 and they replaced it. I broke them again this year and smith sent me a new pair. Why would a guy keep a single par of glasses for 15 years? It's not because I'm cheap, it's because they are amazing .look at smiths photochromic copper lens. It will amplify greens and changes to conditions. Wear this from dark to dark and see stuff that isn't visible to anyone else. Yes they are $200, but worth every penny.
-
I buy a new pair of Oakleys about every 3-4 years. I don't get the high end glasses, I'll usually drop around 100 bucks on a pair. I then baby them to make sure they last. I've had polarized 1 time, still have them, but I scratched the hell out ou the lenses wearing them to cut wood. FFrames are still good, I just need to buy new lenses. I don't mind paying a little more for quality, and then make them last as long as I can.
-
Funny story about my son.... He wanted a pair of Oakleys, so we said only if YOU pay for them, cause he is hard on his stuff. So we find a pair on Craigslist, used, and he buys them for 50$ from a soldier on Ft. Lewis. He had them about 2 days, and we were fishing on the Puyallup. He had them on his hat cause we wre in the shade, and after a few minutes he says @#!^&* I dropped my glasses in the river. I was like, sure glad I didn't pay for them!! He has a strap now on his WalMart shades so he won't lose them this year. :chuckle:
-
Thanks everyone for all the advice. I had bought another $25 dollar pair of polarized Mountain shades last week. And a week later the lenses already felt like they were getting loose in the frames. :bash: Took them back to Cabela's today and had decided that it was time to suck it up and pay the price for good ones. My wife suggested I check out the Bargain Cave first. It never occurred to me that there may be shades in there. But there in the display case was a set of WileyX Gravity and set of Smith's. Tried them both on and really liked the fit and feel of the Wiley's the best. $140 glasses that were on clearance for $80 plus an additional 15% off and I had a $10 off coupon. Ended up being $58. :IBCOOL: 8)
-
Im a sucker for costa 580 glass lenses.
-
I have been wearing Oakleys since the early 80's with the set called "Factory Pilots". I have had many pair since then and will not wear anything but Oakley. Beside they sponsor NASCAR, The US Olympic track team, Us cycling team and a ton of other sponsorships.

Second on the Smiths. I have had two pairs of Smith Whisper Interlocks with the interchangeable lenses since about 2008. One, I got on warranty when the frame snapped on a prior discontinued model due to impact in the cold of NE WA winter. The other I purchased for the drive home, before the warranty replacement.
I also agree that the photochromic copper lenses or similar are awesome. I can wear them dawn to dusk, and even though they came with a set of clear and grey lenses, I mostly wear the copper. No need to take them off. You can even still get replacement lenses for $20, even though the frames are no longer in production. They've been dropped, thrown, hit with rocks and sand, sat on, munched, reefed, and they only have some small scratching on the lenses. Even (to my surprise) the clear lenses provide 100% UV protection and are polarized. No regrets. Your eyes are worth it.
The closest current model appears to be the Smith Pivlock Overdrive.

OP, congrats on a good deal.
-
Well this thread has cost me money. My wife liked the clarity of my new higher end sunglasses that she decided she wanted a nice pair. She got herself a set of Smith's today.
-
In 10 years of daily use I had no real scratches on my Smith's. Glass is the answer.
