No Coach ripped a bugle about 45 minutes before the end of shooting light, took off at the reply without flashlight, pack or water bottle and ended up about 4 miles from the truck in the dark. The jackwagon in the Ford on the way to Gatlinburg saw him humping down the road about 2.5 miles from the truck on the road in the dark without a light.... Coach said "hey!" and the guy drove on by. Breaks every backwood code I know. The jackwagon then came down the hill where I was sitting in the truck with shootem hoping to hear a signal from Coach waiting for him and he stopped on the road and then drove off when I opened my door. Never did know until we got a signal bugle from coach and headed up the other road. Jackwagon in a Ford I hope I don't see you again.

Your latest issue with the guy in the ford reminds me of 2011 when I shot a cow and my partner grabbed the bows and headed 5 miles all up hill to get the packs and drive the truck down. 5 different rigs drove right by her and never offered a ride. A couple even stopped to chat and verify she had an elk down then said adios and drove off.

d as the other rams jumped up.be could not . I chambered another round as I.made sure he was clear Iowwered my cross hairs and send the vld Right threw both lungs anchoring him for good. Now the work begins. After skinning him out for a half body mount and boneing the .meat out my pack was loaded at 3.30 Two hours of pure he'll through rock slides and brush. I decided to gain elevation and spent 45 min scaling the five hundred yards to the top of the ridge. Only carrying two bottles of water was a huge mistake after I split half of o.e. I got. 3/4 and My brother packed water to me and carried my twelve pound rifle the rest of the way. Let me tell.you at 45 packing 100 lbs pack of of there was one of the most. Challenging event's of my life. But also the most rewarding. He's a good ram and a throphy in my mind and I'm sure Ric will do a great job preserving him for years to come. Sorry to my posse for pulling the trigger when they where gone. After getting back to camp and showering had a drink and a few ibprohin and hit the sack . Five am came soon and I drug my ass out of the rack keeping my string of getting up all season intact. Today I only put a few miles on getting into about 30 elk and a 7x7 with a caller on. Good weekend of hunting in my book.

Great ram Corey! The country looks steep even in the pics. It could have been worse. Packing uphill. :chuckle:hell I had to go up to go down. so I got to enjoy both. the most memorial part of the hunt isn't the trophy but what it takes to pull it off.

for the guys that have been scouting remember these rams will move from one end of the area two the other in a day this time of year chasing ewes. there was a bunch of sheep on the bottom half of the mountain . please be safe up there , the upper road is sketchy and those draws are not for giving . Im a big guy that can hike and pack some weight and let me tell you it was all my mind and body had in me to pack that ram and my gear off the mountain. don't take it lightly and bring a friend if those slopes freeze and ice up you could get in trouble quick.
:yeah: end of oct Temps drop and clemans can get nasty fast (just like those Asian masseuses', or so I'm told :chuckle: ) I 2nd coach's advice about a pack partner. I went downhill evening just before dark and it was slick with over 100 lbs on your back. Be safe and stick a big one. :tup:

Bobcat, your hunt starts Nov 1 correct? If so, they're going to be rutting and fighting still. When I harvested mine the last week of oct a few years ago they were in the middle of rutting and man, it was awesome listening to the headbutt, the cracking and bashing echoed all day throughout the canyons while I was searching for the one. I have pics of 3 rams I settled on for the afternoon and the bigger 1 i passed on for the uniqueness of mine. Like coach said find the 1 you like and you'll be happy. I walked in from the bottom and packed out downhill which wasn't fun and I also suggest a pack partner for safety. Best of luck.

I don't enough about sheep to know what they score or what is a good sheep. I have stopped and glassed them on Canyon Road but have no idea what they would score. If I ever get drawn I am just going to shoot the one that I think looks the best to me.

Well, from comparisons of my own and all the ones I could find on-line I'm comfortable enough to say if it curls above the top of the jaw its in the 160's range. Good luck and shoot straight. Study them thoroughly front, back and sideways because different angles can be tricky. It may look big from behind but then it turns, or sideways, you get the idea. :tup:

I think buck and hen terns are a protected species. Though finding even one with antlers is freakin' amazing. Usually just a black head cap and a long narrow bill. Do see them with a Zoro mask every once in a while :chuckle:

Thanks for the help buddy and slay a giant in Colorado next week .Your tag is just the 300 units correct? What size are you setting your eye on? I would think 160-165 would be pretty nice and tough to find in those units. Do you have a honey hole that holds 180's as the weather gets colder?

So I was asked by Karl while out hunting in sept what it would take to pull the trigger ? I always told the guys that if I saw a bull that we where sure would go 380 that i'd shoot because I knew we would get a good bull come later . I also said that I would be happy shooting a 350 bull in dec if we couldn't find better. So when this bull ran across the road on me I was like greased lighting going into action waiting for a possible shot . I kept thinking what a member on here told me about mass and how it can fool you. lets just say after so many days in the field my trigger finger and lack of patience was wearing on me . So it only took a few seconds to make my choice . After I pulled the tape last night I was pleasantly surprised to come up with 382 gross netting well over 370 . So am I just that lucky or that good at judging ? my guess is the latter ! :chuckle: :chuckle: when I taped him and came up with 220 on the frame I knew he had a chance at 380 and just to think if he had one inch on every measurement he would be over 400 ... that's how close it is when they are that big a inch is tough , I just don't know how guys can be so good on scoring those huge bulls . a big thanks to a secret member on here that gave me some great pointers this year ;)missed the guess page. I was thinking 380

btw if your the guy shooting at a herd of elk with a rifle out there from a county road during archery season you might be careful as to who is watching .Were you in the 3911 area in GMU 328 open to Master Hunters? If so he should have been in hunter orange at least. Actually anyone in that area is supposed to be in hunter orange even if hunting with a bow.

I cant even make this one up! Coach hiked from one zip code to another and chased down a herd of elk, then after he caught them. The herd decided I was just a piece of sagebrush and wanted to trample me.
You just had to be there to understand.
You should have jump on one and rode it around....it would have been easier getting up and down those mountains :chuckle:

Btw Bergers can't kill a thing ! Three shots three animals ! Just one extra for good measure....I guess I was trigger happy :chuckle:I've never seen a deer double lunged/heart/spined/gut shot all in the same shot! :chuckle: Bullet straight up liquefied his insides! In one side and out the other with amazing internal damage and almost no meat loss. I've always been a bonded bullet fan but these are gonna get a run in my WSM next year.
