Below is my pack list for my upcoming hunt. The total weight at the top is without water, I will probably carry between 100-120ounces of water in but there will be a source nearby so I might only take the 70oz bladder full and fill the other ones. I'm going to be wearing my kuiu attack pants and merino top in but if it gets to hot I'll throw on the shorts and kuiu tshirt. I'm taking an extra pair of socks and underwear so I can let one dry out during the day. The first and last day of food are lighter because I'm going in, in the afternoon and coming out the last day mid day.

thats a solid list.
if youre looking for input a couple easy things. if not, disregard. :chuckle:
AA lithium, more expensive but last much longer. 3 lith AA's is only 1.5oz but honestly you dont even need spares for a short trip.
august, i like shorts and rain pants, i think it gives you more options. also consider gaiters, even if theyre short ones. i dont know many people that start hunting in gaiters, that go away from it.
with your EE quilt, you can get away with just an e-vent drysack, no compression needed and save about an oz.
some pretty dang good gps apps for the iphone, i bet silk will chime in, really no need for the garmin with them..
i found .4oz of TP sufficient per day. heavy duty stuff too. a whole roll of charmin quilted is only like 2.6oz with roll removed...
thats about 1.5lb saved.
pretty tight list!
do you have gloves or more importantly a stocking hat?
-
FTF are you rocking shorts and gaiters?

FTF are you rocking shorts and gaiters?
i do pretty often. i had some AWESOME sitka ascent shorts but tatered 'em after 2 years. this year ive got some quick dry DC shorts. i am running flextex II gaiters this year. last year was OR endurance. but im also running kryptek valhalla's which are really growing on me.
-
I'll have to try to get more accurate weights on the small stuff because my scale isn't very accurate, I'm taking a half of roll of tp so I can bump that down. I'll have to check to see what battieres I have. I plan on putting fresh ones in the night before. Just want to have an extra set for the gps and light incase we get something at dusk so I'm not stuck in the dark gutting and packing a bear.
I've tried a couple of the apps for the iphone but I just can't seem to put away the garmin. I love it. Taking the phone to turn on for pictures mostly.
I might have to test my shorts and gaiters this weekend, I only have or crocs so I don't know if their be too loud of chaff my legs up.
Thanks for the advice, did a lot of research to try and get the right gear first. The quilt has changed my life in terms of backcountry camping.

Why the Orange vest? Not required until October. Your list looks pretty solid. Good luck.
-
I'm going too throw my kuiu beanie in there since it's less than an ounce if it gets cold up there. I have some gloves but don't see the need with the weather being so hot? I didn't want to waste some weight on them.
The orange vest it to wrap around the pack when I'm packing out. I simply just don't trust someone not to mistake me fore a bear. I've meant some weirdos hunting last year that just made me nervous. One guy thought I was a deer walking down the road in full orange :dunno:
-
I can't hunt without gloves. Just can't do it. Don't care how hot it is, etc. They only weigh a tiny bit. Not nearly enough to worry about. Thorns, rocks, etc. Get some mechanix gloves or something.
-
the first few hours can be very cold while glassing. espec if your ridge is windy. and being a quilt user, if that temps drops, you may want that hat. last year on an aug bear hunt it went from a solid 75 during the day to like 35 that night.
crocs may or may not work for you. for me i like short gaiters til around oct.
i run 10k degrees according to those that have spent time in the backcountry with me though. :chuckle: silk wheres tall gaiters year round with no complaints..

I love the topo maps by Phil Endicott for my iphone. It's seriously amazing and worth the 7 bucks and super accurate.
I also an a huge KUIU fan but got sold big time on the valhallas from Kryptek...
I also run KUIU gaiters with them and don't whine about the heat like some people...
I can't hunt with gloves, I hate them, but to each there own!

Are the topos in the App Store?

Are the topos in the App Store?
Yup just search "topo maps" and it should be the first one that pulls up.

Thanks. Found it and purchased it.

Cool list and thanks for the topo 411.
What about a camera other than iPhone?
-
That topo app is sweet.

That topo app is sweet.
Is it for all of WA? Do they have other states?
-
Looks to be nation wide, Dale.
-
Yup it's all the topo maps by map section, just download what you need and my phone uses satellites to pinpoint my location without needing service.
Like I said very accurate. Could tell I was fifty feet off trail...
You can set way points and things too.
As for a camera I use the iPhone for that, but FTF uses a nice camera and handles the photography on our trips.

How do you keep your phone charged? Solar panel or back up battery thing.
Added the beanie and adjusted some weights I had wrong. Looking to adjust alittle more but can't find much to mess with.
Drilled some holes in the handle of my spork though I don't think I saved much :chuckle:

I keep it in airplane mode and only turn it on when I need it. Lasts for DAYS.

Drilled holes. Wow. I'm not sure you're going to approve of my gear list. I'll just keep it to myself and unpack in my tent so you don't see all the crap I'll have.
-
Haha well once I did that it broke so I had to go buy a new one anyways. Not drilling this time.

you made some savings on part of your big 3 this year right?

I got a much lighter pack. I went to a golite sl3 from my sierra designs vapor light tent. I didn't save much weight there but some ...a half pound or so. My problem is weeding out all the little piddly things that are not heavy by themselves but added up, they are. For example...I'm having a huge mental debate because I've always carried Havalon, fixed blade and gerber multitool. I know I don't need all those, I just have to convince myself to leave one if them here. I should leave the fixed blade knife but I probably won't.

Id leave the multi tool.

Well I'm all packed up and without the gun I'm at 29lbs. With the gun I'm at 36.6 and will probably carry just my 70oz bladder in since water will be plentiful.
Hoping to come out heavy.
-
Good luck man. I hope to see pics of that pack stuffed with bear meat.
-
I've got too much crap and am at 40 pounds all up. Ready to roll and looking forward to a few days in the mountains.
-
For me every fall bear hunting pack has Ben's Wipes bug dope as a major item!
-
I took a swim in permethrin a couple nights ago.
-
Lessons learned for packing and weight savings. Had way to much food. To much snack stuff. Probably could of saved a solid pound there. The floor less shelter is not for me, but I have a tarptent on the way and will actually be saving 4ozs and will be able to sit up.
Nothing beats a good pillow, the sea to summit areos ul is awesome,e and worth the 2oz.
A xtherm is my next upgrade, zlite pad isn't very comfortable.
Can cut weight on a shorter trip by taking a half full fuel bottle since you are only using it two or three times
