yeah, im thinking anytime we can get 5 or 6 of us together or if we want more we can split into a couple groups and see what happens. anytime works for me. i work for the fire dept here and i have alot of time off. so what ever days we can match up scheduals works for me.

that sounds like a good idea

I dont have the whole waterfowl expertise down yet but like to get out there and learn and meet some new people. Always game for helping haul stuff and help set up or anything.

I may be able to go, I need to check with the boss (wife). I have a buddy that lives in Yakima that wants to go out sometime too, we were actually trying to get a plan together. I would probably be down there sat and sun.

Spur,

Very generous of you.  My boy and I would be interested but it will all depend on the weather and travel conditions over the hill.  I've got 18 DZ's and 3 x-landrs.

By the way...I am a waterfowl virgin! The only thing I can call is coyotes, and I am not too sure of that at times.
Title: Re: group hunt
Post by: C-Money on December 15, 2008, 01:32:27 PM
Spur can call, go and have fun! I am kinda getting a bad feeling that this hunt is gonna end up at one of the "secret" spots I showed Spur a year or two ago! I have found that a lot of Spurs friends are out there a lot. I would like to get out more, but time is very limited! I would like to get out on Spur's friends hot spots sometime.
Title: Re: group hunt
Post by: spur_ride on December 15, 2008, 01:54:26 PM
no c-money, we are going to a goose field not a duck hole. so it should be a fun honker shoot

Some of spurs friends spots are pretty nice spots too maybe sometime if this friend is nice enough well have another group hunt on his stuff :)

I can't wait.  What shot size do you guys recommend out in the fields?  I just want to make sure I bring the right stuff.  I currently use 2, BB, BBB's.
Title: Re: group hunt
Post by: spur_ride on December 15, 2008, 02:11:24 PM
ive use BB myself
Title: Re: group hunt
Post by: C-Money on December 15, 2008, 02:13:25 PM
2's, BB's, and BBB's are all fine. I use BB's my self. Just talked to Spur on the phone. He is scouting a few fields in the area, should be some good fun! P.S., I am kinda protective of a few duck holes, as they are all slowly getting over hunted more and more every year! The duck hunting is not like it was 15 years ago!

Do you use 3" or 31/2"?
Title: Re: group hunt
Post by: Elkrunner on December 15, 2008, 02:49:00 PM
3 1/2 or 3, I have a benelli pump.  I shoot the 3 1/2 a lot but still have a ton of 3 inches that I need to use.
Title: Re: group hunt
Post by: spur_ride on December 15, 2008, 02:52:38 PM
3 1/2 are good. i shoot 3". we are taking shots that are between 15yds to 35 yds

Hopefully it will be slight warmer by January 4th.   National weather service is saying it could reach a high of 4 degrees there on Friday.  Whooo its going to be a cold one.  Should make it nice for hunting this weekend.

Boy I may be too ashamed to show with my Mossberg, with the likes of Bennelli and Browning in the mix, but it has always served its purpose for me. Maybe I will use my daughters gold finger nail polish and draw a buck on the side of it.
And if there are Spokane based people going we should try to make a plan for a carpool. I am hopin I can make it, I can either take a 8 seater suburban or the 5 seater crew cab

I'm totally down for this. I'll mark the date on my calendar. I have a layout blind, but none of them fancy goose decoys. I'm good at carrying them though  :chuckle:

This is going to be a fun time.  I would like to say thanks to shootmeup and spur_ride for having the generosity to take us all out.  This is truly the type of sportsmanship that this website is all about, sharing ideas and getting to know more people that love what we do.

I don't have a cam but I may be able to borrow one if nobody else has one.  It would be cool to post up some video to show everyone on this site.

hey guys just talked to Geoff (spur ride) and were thinking that our group hunt is going to be scheduled for sunday the 4th of january... the hunt will either take place in moses in a cut cornfield or in mattawa on a cut buck wheat field depending on bird numbers.

our thoughts were roughly up to ten guys depending on if any of you wantin to go have blinds... most likely no dogs jsut because there will be enough of us to pick up birds and at this point of the year it would be just one more thing to hide .... as far as decoys and if you want to bring em we would like to use all fullbodies ( green head gear, final approach,, hard cores, dave smiths, drop zones or whatever other QUALITY full bodies you guys have.  no offense to those who may want to bring shells or silohuettes but at this point the birds are educated enough to know better and we want a good shoot for this occasion... if you guys have any questions just message me and we can get it all figured out... that morning we would probly just meet at a gas station in moses and head the parade out to the field and then let the good times roll.... again any questions just post up or message and shortly well have the list going of who all is coming...

LIST SO FAR OF PEOPLE GOING january 4th: me( shootemup)
                                            spur_ride
                                            onehorn

                                            c-money
one spot left right now were going to call it good with 9 guys... if anyone is interested in another hunt the very next weekend on saturday the 10th just post up and let me know and well start a list for another hunt...

y
sky bustin is shooting at birds way our range that are most likely flying by and not coming into the decoys and just shooting them out of sheer hope which is not ok.. if all works as planned well be shooting at birds landing in the decoys   if any one has any issues with this im sure we have plenty of others that would like to come in your place

No I understand I am just a newbie to the waterfowl chasin. Last time I shot at ducks I think I was about 13 and they were landing in a $hit pond on a dairy in Outlook. If I make an earlier trip down there is it legal to try to arrow geese, once they a on the ground of course. I've taken a couple turkeys with stick and string a few years ago.

Hey guys,

Just to add a little here to what Spur has posted, with this many guys firearms safety is going to be a must and everyone is going to have to really pay attention to shooting zones and what they are doing.  Not trying to be an ass but I'll put it out there now, I wont tolerate anything unsafe, too many bad things can happen in the blink of an eye and if I see something I dont like I'm going to let you know.  It's nothing personal and if it happens please dont take it that way.  I'm sure Spur will have a little pre-hunt brief on safety stuff, if he doesn't I will.  This is shaping up to be a good time, we can have fun and still be safe killing birds.

Dan

hey gamblin guy, you hit it on the nail. once we get to the field me and shootemup are going to let everyone know what the game plan is and how things will happen. we will let people know about where the can shoot and where they cant.  we will let you all know when we get there. this is shaping up to be a great hunt and i am looking forward to it.

Depending on flock sizes, we may need to rotate shooters. All depending on numbers per flock.
Title: Re: group hunt
Post by: Elkrunner on December 17, 2008, 08:17:52 PM
Sounds good to me.  The last thing that we need is unsafe practices in the field.  How is it looking over that way?  Are you seeing new birds coming from the north?  I was going to call my father in law and see what he has been seeing but that dang work thing got in my way of making any phone calls today.

depending on where we hunt it could be anywhere between 5 and 6 in the morning gamblin guy. and c-money i agree. depending on flock sizes and what way they come in but we can cover all that in the field when we get there.

Elkrunner, no kidding, Quincy is much closer than N.B.. Moses lake is all but froze every where. Alder street fill has a little open water, and birds are crammed in there. May be better numbers down on the Columbia, Mattawa may be the place to be with all the frozen water around. I sure our birds here on the lake just jumped down to the Big River!

I don't have a snow cover for my blind though.  I may have to see if I can get one last moment.  How are the birds over there?  I had 3 groups of at least 100 fly over my house this morning.  I have never seen geese out here, so maybe they are some new ones coming down from the north.

Sent you a pm about carpooling. Not sure I'll be able to drive myself. My summer tires haven't been performing too well the last couple weeks, don't really wanna risk the pass.

Sno,

I'm in the Monroe area, if we decide to drive over sunday morning you can ride with us.  We may try to go over and hunt pheasants on saturday with a couple other guys but will figure that out this week.  I'll shoot you a pm as soon as I figure it out.

I know we are going on the 10th, sorry to butt in.
My partners were wondering if there would be any oppurtunities to duck hunt on Sunday the 11th or if someone has any info for us?
Thank you.
Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

That would be awesome. Otherwise I probably won't be able to go. I was thinkin of borrowing my cousins silverado but I can't really afford to drive it without splitting gas. Let me know ASAP, I have a $100 gift card for Joe's that i'm going to spend on some new gear and shells if I end up goin.

Doesn't look like I will make it to Moses this weekend  :( My dad called and has a friend that has a son that lives in Spokane and he got some nasty infection over the holidays and had to have emergency surgery, so my dad volunteered me to meet the guy when he gets home this weekend ( weather permitting) and help him out. I am going after work tonight to shovel his driveway, should be fun probably only 36 to 40 inches of snow.

I hope I gave enough notice for someone else to be able to go. Really wish I could make it. Maybe another time, or we could chase some dogs later.

Wow, that is amazing...  Should have turned around and went inside.  Called your neighbor to see what he could do.  Then the police.

I first took my shotgun out of the truck, but he backed off, so I called the cops.
They broke up the party.
The guy left and apparently the plate on his truck is stolen.

sounds like maybe you and the neighbor need to have a talk on parking situations

The cops did a real good job of explaining what it is to throw a party, what they are responsible for and how do it with your neighbors approval.
I could hunt if someone was going over from the Vancouver area.
i don't think momma would let me drive the 4+ hrs to get there.

Sounds great.  Are you seeing a lot of birds up that way?  I hunted down in Crescent Bar area today and got one.  I saw a lot of high flyers.
I will see you all in the morning.  I will be in a silver nissan frontier.

RATS! My Chessy pup chewd threw my cable yesterday. So no TV, phone or internet! Had to pull some cable and put a new end on today and get that running. Kids are not happy without cartoons. Thanks to everyone for having me out yesterday.  I had a good time.  I just wish I didn't have to bail early and would have been there for the last 2 geese.  Luckily I did, the pass was nasty lastnight.

Hate to be a downer, but I dont think there is much using the fields west of town that we may have access to. I would say it dosent look good at this point. I talked to the land owner at work over the weekend and he said not much happening. Have you talked to him lately Spur?

Well at the present time there is no way for anyone to get to the eastside from the west side.  The damn floods, mudslides and avalanches have everyone over here stuck.  This sucks.  They are saying that it might be 3-5 days before I can leave my subdivision. Thankfully I live on a big hill and we are not flooded.   I hope some of you guys get out and slay a few for the rest of us!!!!

Spur,

From what I'm hearing you guys are getting a few birds back up there with the warm up.  Have a good time this weekend if you put something together, would love to join you again but not sure the passes will be open yet.
