Title: Best salmon fishing next week? Possible fish/hunt swap?
Post by: bearpaw on August 14, 2014, 06:29:45 PM
So this is one of those topics asking for fishing advice!

I have to make a trip to the wet side (Sequim) the first of the week and will probably have a relative with me from Wisconsin, we want to go salmon fishing for 1 to 3 days, where are the fish hitting the best? Willing to drive to the best fishing area wherever it is from the Columbia to the BC border. We would prefer to catch kings, but coho are fun too, would also be interested in tuna if they are still around, never done that. Any ideas appreciated, if you would rather send a pm that would be appreciated too. Would be nice to do it ourselves but willing to take a charter on the ocean if needed!  THANKS

Fish/Hunt Swap
If someone else is going fishing to a good location next week and has the system down and wants to take us along, I would be willing to trade for a spring turkey hunt. I have that system down and excellent private land to hunt on in the northeast, I will guarantee a bird and you'll probably get two!

In the Sequim area you have some great fishing just up the road at Neah Bay or La Push right now!...the silvers are just showing nd the kings should be there. Some of the charters offer salmon & bottom fish combos which is a great way to come home with a lot of fish.

Buoy 10 on the columbia is getting hot...and next week its supposed to be awesome tides! If you're gonna venture way down there give John Thomas of Rotten Chum Guide Service or Shane Magnuson of Upper Columbia Guide Service a call...

Westport offers a ton of charters and they all are doing good for salmon right now...again, if you decide to do this try & book a combo salmon/bottom fish trip...most tuna charters are fully booked but you might find one that has a cancelation openning...I'll try & pm you with more info later.

Best bet is probably all the way out to the coast (La Push or Neah Bay).  Seems to be the consistent area.  The straits have been mixed results.

if you can't find anything between now and then, I can take you guy's out for 1 day here the kings are running in area 12 big time right now. I would be looking for something in Westport though.

Shane magnusen is a great guide! More than likely he is booked up tho? Would be worth checking into, if he is there, or where ever he is, that's where I would be fishing!! Good luck!!

Thanks for all the advice, I was planning on fishing for 2 to 3 days but my trip plans have been shortened, now I'm trying to find a charter near the peninsula for Tuesday morning, several members offered to take us fishing but nobody is going until Wednesday or Thursday. Thanks so much for the offers, that is really appreciated.

hoping to do a salmon/rockfish combo

if we get to go fishing I'll post photos

Dale, head down to the skokomish river , Looks like Tuesday is a minus tide, You need to experience  this type of fishing , its the closest thing to hunting and fishing all at once..... :o

Dale,
The straights might be a little sketchy on Tuesday as they are calling for 15 knots wind building to 29 knots in the evening. It can always change.

That doesn't sound good, I imagine the ocean will probably be to rough too? Have been considering doing a charter out of Neah Bay, LaPush, or Westport!

THANKS for the heads up!

If weather laid  down I would opt for either La Push or Westport. Might be hard to find charter out of La Push right now.

We were going to take a charter out of LaPush on Tuesday but the weather now says the ocean will be too rough so our trip got cancelled.  :(

I guess we will try to find a good place to fish a river on Tuesday and try to rework my schedule so I can stay an extra day and fish on the salt Wednesday.

What are you wanting to pull out of a river?

For Tuesday we are practically to the point of going for anything that can wiggle the pole tip!  :chuckle:

We were hoping to catch salmon, I found a guide on the peninsula with an open day but he only has room for two in the boat, we are a group of three now. My nephew is bringing his 12 yr son, they are on the road now headed to my place.

If the wind does not cooperate and your not dead set on the salt, I took customers on trips a week ago on the Cowlitz with Dan Houfek. The fishing was fantastic for steelhead with quality fish. It's getting late but based off those trips, its not over. If interested, give him a call 509-965-1721, yes he's from the east side but he knows the river.

On Tuesday...instead of fishing take them up to Hurricane Ridge for a quick hike...awesome place to just soak in the Olympics...especially if you have family from out of state with you. And its a lot closer to Sequim than the Columbia or Cowlits.

We decided to hang around another day and wait for the Tuesday winds to pass. We've got a trip planned to fish on Wednesday at Westport, thanks to everyone who has offered advice. Sounds like the kings are hitting, I've never caught a king so I'm very excited to go, heading west in the morning. Thanks again to everyone who tried to help us, it's much appreciated.

Don't back up from the deckhand with the net. Just reel up to the swivel and raise your rod tip right into the net :) DONT BACK AWAY FROM THE DECKHAND WITH THE NET.

I've been on the ocean quite a few times on charters and with friends and only gotten sick once, but my nephew and his son have never been on the ocean. I'm going to get some Dramamine just to try and play it safe.  :chuckle:

I've always caught lots of silvers, if I get a king it will be my first.

Are you going on a charter trip or with a friend??

Whoever it is you are going with, hopefully, they will head south because that's where the action is.  There are a few fish here and there up the north beach but it has been very spotty.  The boat ride south will be considerably longer but they are catching some of the seasons best sized kings down south out in deeper water.

If you do get hooked in to a nice King you'll know it pretty quickly.  Keep the line tight.  Don't reel against him if they decide to run.  If you aren't sure of your proper drag setting have someone check it for you.  Be patient, don't try and horse them in, just keep that line tight and let the fish do its thing.  You get nice 20+lb King on and bring it over the rail you'll be ruined and never want to catch a Coho again.  The smile on your face will last all day!  If you're doing a charter trip, listen to your deckhand.  They'll be as much help to you as anyone.

Also, two very important things to remember, one of them was already mentioned, don't back up from the rail once you get the fish along side the boat.  #2, after the fish is netted, give the line some slack.  Your job is done, no need to keep a tight line after it's in the net.  I've had fished actually pulled back out of the net by the person holding the rod because they didn't slack the line.  I got a hook stuffed in the palm of my hand because they didn't slack the line off and when the boat rolled and the rod holder stepped back the hook and line snapped up and hooked me just under my thumb.

It gets deeper faster when you go south so even if you're fishing 300ft, you won't be as far off shore as if you were straight out fishing 300ft.

I'm sure you'll have great trip.  There is nothing like hooking into a big King salmon and feeling them shake that big ole head.  Ummmm, nothing like it!!

We met buckhorn2 and his son early, greeted each other, had a few laughs, and left in the boat to fish. The bite started out a little slow in the morning, we failed to hook many fish that bit, we lost several fish right at the boat, and we had to release a few native coho. The action really picked up about 9ish and we ended up keeping 4 Chinook and 6 Coho for the 5 of us and were done by 10:30 or 11:00ish. We figured that big silver John caught was about 12 pounds and the kings ranged from about 18-22 pounds. I've caught quite a few cohos in the past but this was my first king today!

The day was a pleasure with buckhorn2 and his son, they are awesome people, if we had not caught a single fish it would have been a fun day. But, we caught lots of fish (probably the best salmon fishing I've ever seen), and had an absolute fantastic day. After cleaning and filleting the fish we checked out some of buckhorn2's trophies, very nice indeed, how can life be any better than that.

I've got more work to do at home but buckhorn enticed us with an invitation to fish tomorrow. So, with sincere reluctance, we made the very hard decision to fish another day.  :chuckle:

Hunterman will be meeting us in the morning and we'll hopefully have more fishing action!

Thanks again Del for 3 great days. We do have fun fishing together   Plus the fact of meeting new friends, what more could a person ask for.
