Title: Which Brake?
Post by: Antlershed on December 08, 2008, 01:25:21 PM: Picked this little guy up last night in .300 RUM and he's in need of a brake. :) I have heard good things about the Defensive Edge brakes, but thought I would ask for other opinons.

Post by: GoldTip on December 08, 2008, 01:49:03 PM: I would personally not use a muzzle brake that couldn't be unscrewed for hunting. They are just too loud, and in my personal opinion, if you need a brake to be able to shoot the gun, it's probably too much gun for you. Just my :twocents:

Post by: Craig on December 08, 2008, 02:22:06 PM: I had a Mag-na-port (sp?) brake put on mine. It works real good and does screw on and off. It is loud as hell if you don't have ear protection on.

Post by: WAPITIHUNTER on December 08, 2008, 09:18:41 PM: Ears are way more important than your shoulder. If you want to use the brake while hunting just get some Hunters Ears or something similar that cuts out the noise.

Post by: dbllunger on December 08, 2008, 09:33:55 PM: Not a fan of a brakes at all for hunting, but they really work. I had a custom one built for my varmint rig 7MM STW by "Shooting Star Rifles". I don't remember where but it was on the West Side, and it is perfectly fit and works as well as any I have ever tried. I put a Gentry (Montana) on my daughters 300WSM and I would not recommend it. I have also tried numerous brands from all different designs. They all work just fine so find the one that fits your price and turn around time.

Post by: buckhorn2 on December 08, 2008, 10:33:20 PM: I had a break on my 300wby but if the noise does;nt get you the dirt and stuff that flies in your face will. If you want to cut down on recoil I have several rifles that I have had a bear trap put in. It is a mercury tube that goes inside of the stock behind the butt pad and it cuts down on a lot of recoil. Just a thought but it made my 300 ultra mag a lot more pleasant to shoot.

Post by: bobcat on December 08, 2008, 11:18:46 PM: Is that a Sendero? If so, I think they weigh close to 10 pounds. No need for a brake. Try it first and see what it's like. Maybe start out with lighter weight bullets, like 165 grain. I can't imagine the recoil being all that bad in a Sendero. That's why I want one.

Post by: Antlershed on December 09, 2008, 01:18:02 AM: It weighs right at 8 1/2lbs before putting a scope on it. I think I may shoot it first and see what I think. I was talking to another guy on here who has the DE brake on his Sendero and he said it kicks about the same as a .25-06. I've gotta order my new trigger here in the next couple of days as well.

I agree Iceman! I have custom built 300 RUM and I love it. It was built by Brett Evans who is the owner of N. W. Armswerkes in Bonney Lake. I have used this rifle for the past 8+ years. If I was going to shoot a few rounds each year before season to make sure it was right on, I would have not put a muzzle brake on it. I have however shot it much more than that and the muzzle break has been a shoulder saver. I am not sure which brand it is but it is detachable and it looks good. I weighed the rifle a few years ago and it was pushing 12-12.5 #'s so I brought it back into Brett and had the barrel fluted. That knocked about a pound off and it cools a little faster at the range. This is not a mountain rifle even though I have packed it up and down more mountains then I care to think about. I have never noticed any increase in the level of noise for the shooter as a result of the brake. Maybe it is the design. :dunno: I have always used good ear protection. I do know that it is not a pleasent experience for anyone standing off to the side of me. As far as recoil, it is considerably less then my son's 300 win mag. I can shoot 40-60 rounds with no problems. I am building a mountain rifle now so that when I decide the RUM is too heavy I can pass it on to my son and move into the lighter rifle. That will be a hard day for me but I look forward to my son's enjoyment of the rifle just as I have for the past several years. :twocents:

It's a brake that Kirby Allen uses and it works awsome. The 270 kicks about like a 22-250. I also have one on my 270 A.M. and putting 60-80 round thru that thing is a lot of fun. Kicks like a 243 (maybe). And that gun weighs in at 14.5 lbs.

I noticed it isn't any louder to the shooter, but those in the near vicinity will be cussing you. Is it loud... hell yeah, but that's what happens when you torch off 100+ grains of powder down a .30 cal bore. If you're shooting anything more than a .22 rimfire without hearing protection you're doing your ears a serious disservice... get the brake and some muffs.

They actually make less noise now than they did before they installed the muzzle brake. 30-40% reduction in recoil, improved accuracy. When shooting side by side - my 270 makes as much noise as his 300 RUM in a covered range after installation of the brake. If you look at this brake from the muzzle end - you will notice many drilled ports down range vs. some of the other brakes. This moves much of the noise down range. Only other major consideration is for shots close to the ground - a muzzle brake will kick up a some dust into the air, so it will be like shooting a second shot through a black powder cloud if you are in the prone position on dry dusty ground.

My wife just bought me a Remington Model 700 XCR in 300 RUM just last week for my birthday. I haven't been able to shoot it yet, as I am still working on test loads. But if I have any issues with it, you can bet that I will be sending my Gun to these folks for an addition of a brake. I am starting a thread on load data for the 300 RUM to see what everyone else is having success with.

My brakes are only loud to someone standing next to me or off to the side a little. Fact is that someone out in front of the gun can't hardly hear the shot. Case in point, BTKR killed a bear behind camp..we heard the shot and went back to help him pack, next day I shot a bear in the same spot and noone at camp heard the shot. It was the muzzle brake that made the difference. I don't consider the brake as a recoil buffer but as a barrel control device.

He had aq bad shoulder and eneded up magna porting it. Cant say what id did for accuracy, but it did help lessen the kick. But man is it loud!

Im with the others who say get a *censored* pad for the range and run it. Put the money into your Ziess!!! ;)

I have a Decelerator and a brake on my rifle and luv em both. Noise is a bitch at the range but I've had no issue w/ dust or noise in the field. Sometimes I think the brake could help w/ game. I've shot animals and see the others stand around not knowing where the noise came from. In cases where you might miss it may give you an extra sec or 2 to get off another shot :dunno:

I'm not sure what brake is on my gun. I believe it was some outfit over in MT that made it.

I also can see impact on any shot over about 250 yards with my .300 RUM... that's a big deal when you're hunting alone. I must say though... that the ability to practice 5-10 times as much is the biggest advantage to the break. Most guys I know with big ass guns can only shoot them well a couple of times before the flinch gets ahold of them. I can hammer 20 rounds through the RUM bomber without any problems at all.

I can't say that I've noticed it. I agree w/ High Country in that when shootin game I'm pretty zoned in and don't notice noise, recoil, etc.

There is no added noise to the shooter... so I don't worry about it.

Wrong... I've shot mine in the dust and grass... I can see bullet impact. A radial break is terrible about blowing stuff all over... but a good baffle style break doesn't vent out the bottom, so all is well.

Post by: RubblesPH on December 21, 2008, 08:57:50 PM: I purchased a Winchester 300 win mag with a Boss system when they first came out in the early 90's. The system works well for reducing muzzle jump (that's what I call it) recoil and accuracy.....but it is loud!

I was in my early 20's when I first started shooting it and was religious about hearing protection at the range and about 50/50 in the field. Needless to say, I have hearing loss and tinnitus (permanent ringing) in both ears. Although some of damage could have been caused by a considerable amount of duck/goose hunts with multiple guns being shot at the flock......the majority can be contributed to the brake.

I guess the point I'm rambling towards is that you should be wearing hearing protection regardless if you have a muzzle brake or not and regardless if your in the field or on the bench. Your hearing is priceless.....it sucks just turning 40 and I'm having difficulty hearing things in meetings and I'm already saying "huh", "what" and "look at me when your talking to me." My kids think I'm nuts or way past my prime!

There's so much technology out there that there has to be something that works for you. It's worth every penny too.

Love my brake and will put one on my next gun. Noise shouldn't be an issue since I'll already be wearing hearing protection anyway. :twocents:

Post by: BIGDOG on December 22, 2008, 05:44:43 PM: several years ago I sent my 300 winnie to George Vais and had his brake installed and did a trigger job at the same time and it/me shoots alot better!Now Ron Bartlett does the brakes!I don't feel the recoil and the sound in the field isn't even noticeable!I would recommend the Vais brake over any other brake on the market! Thanks for the help Josh, and I would have used the smith you suggested, but I don't know when I would have the time to make it up there, and the price to have DE do it is about the same.

I've ran Vias and Boss', been around accubreak's, KDF's, etc, none are worth the trade off's. Get your trigger and glass mounted up and go shoot her, it won't be so bad. My big guns get shot at paper in a lead sled, then they go kill stuff. Let us know how she shoots when you get er set up. Later
