Title: Opening Day High Country Bear
Post by: archery288 on August 17, 2014, 11:56:57 AM: Went up opening morning looking for a bear in the high country. At daylight everything was clear and allowed for time to glass the hillsides below us. Nothing was out there roaming around so we sat down and began to wait. Shortly after, a thick fog rolled in and plagued us for about 45 min. When the fog broke, I looked down spotted a brown patch near a big tree out in the open. Staring at it for about a minute or two I was about to assume it was a stump until it moved. Scrambling to get in shooting position, we were plagued once again by the thick fog.

We played cat and mouse for over 30 minutes with this bear before getting an accurate reading with my rangefinder which wouldn't work because of the fog. One well placed shot and the bear was tumbling down the hill. It's an old sow and she didn't have any cubs and hadn't been milked this year either. Her skull green scored at 16 6/8". Old bear, and the coloring was awesome! Time to get after a few more with friends!

Beautiful. A real fatty came to me several years back too, in October. My buddy's mother rendered all the fat down in exchange for 1/3 the bear grease. We ended up with 24 pints altogether. Plus the meat was totally marbeled with it. There was some professional butcher at a potluck I went to who would not believe it wasn't Angus beef, lol.
