I have hunted there since I was a little kid, shot my first deer there when I was nine.

My grandpa was the guy that lived up there and opened the gate for about 20 years. I bet he gave a few guys on here a hard time as he was kinda a hardass. lol

There are some good bears up there, if you want pm me and I would be glad to give you some info or take you up and show you around.

Yeah my grandpa's name is Vern.
I sure wish it was like it was before champion sold. It doesn't seem like much changes for the better.

If that unnamed guy would like to offer me any advice, I would be glad to accept it.  I hunted bear for the first time this last year, and it was also the first year that I bought the Hancock permit.  I saw a few bears before the season, but nothing during the season.  Granted, I have a lot to learn about bear hunting, but I would love to know where, and how these guys are seeing, and killing all these bears.  If anyone has any advice, info, tips, etc., I'm all ears.  I will graciously accept any help.

I used to hunt it way back before they started charging access. Got a 5x7 elk and a 400# bear out of the swamp/apple orchard at the south end of the lake back in '83. We used to see a lot of bears (and bear hunters) in there when you could run them w/ dogs. I never used dogs myself just sat in the trees. :archer:

From what I hear...just the bottom 85 acres...including the shops...6 million last I herd.

I live very close...used to hunt all the land where the mansions are now, before it was cleared.

I remember old Vern. He tried to get my dad to buy me a muzzleloader from him. Didn't seem very friendly up until we showed interest in his guns. Like the rest of you I wish it was like the old days. I just bought my first permit in more years than I can remember. It will be good though because I can get my kids out in the woods since I just live down the street. Be nice to get a bear in there, too.

When I was a kid my buddies and i got kicked out of the apple orchard by the sheriff cuz we were shooting .22's at night. Hey we just had to try out the new 30 round clip my buddy had gotten. Little did we know a sheriff lived just down the valley. Lol his buddy put the scare in us that night. Haven't been down there in some time either, although, I do drive by it a lot on my way up to Eatonville for dinner at Tall Timber restaurant.

We used to camp by the creek, but we didn't do any shooting at night. (too hard to find our arrows)

As far as bear hunting goes, glass, glass, glass. That's how you see bears.

As far as the Indians buying Champion, well I've heard all kinds of rumors, and so far, none have come true. But, if they do buy it, well, there will be some very unhappy, not so law-abiding locals, that may open season on them, not to mention all the big bulls in there. There is a lot of heritage in that place, and some of those multi-generation families that practically live in there won't take it laying down.

I have hunted there in the past.  Saw 9 bears that year and six were blonde to cinnamon.  Sounds like the whiskey warriors are at it again.  If we don't spend our money at their casino's they can't buy anymore of OUR land.
