What a awesome day.... hunted hard all morning and had some elk talking to us in some reprod between a cut and a steep hill/creek. I set up on the egde of the cut about 90 yrds above the flat and amber went a little ways into the reprod. We could hear elk walking around and they would chirp at us every now and again... we set up and called for over 2 hrs. I hear a twig break and this guy walks up into the cut from the timber across the creek... he comes up to 85 yrds and beds down on the edge of the cut! amber snuck down and it took almost 90 min for her to get in and get a shot. She smoked him at 40 yrds and he ran out into the cut.... he stopped at 82 yards. head down..blood pouring out.. he was dead but if you can get a shot.. take it.. so I whacked him.. that is the other arrow you see.... he ran off and fell in the wallow where he died... we walked up on him taking his last breaths but amber put one more in him to end it even faster.... amazing hunt.. awesome to watch her shoot her first branch bull!! she is a amazing hunter and the stalk she did was great... I am not even sure I would have killed him if it was me.... We actually got a double yesterday as my buddy was one timber patch over and killed a bull that looks like a twin of this one about an hour after she killed hers. Those 2 make 7 bulls in 2 years out of this area for archery/ML/Rifle.

Big thanks to Paul and Brad for getting us into this secluded Washington wilderness and giving me the opportunity to hunt this bull.
At daybreak we soaked our clothes in elk piss and put our boots to good use. About a mile into our trek up to the first ridge line, we busted a herd of elk way too smart for our calls. With hopes still high, we forged on and made a trek up and down several canyons, through jack-firs, marsh, tall timber, and meadows for several miles. We set up several times to mimic a small herd milling about, but drew no interest from elk. After hiking into timber that we were sure hadn't seen a human for quite awhile, Brad handed me the keys to the truck and said, "I'm going to kill an elk." Being a logger, Brad can hike over extreme terrain, harder and faster than anyone I know, so that meant Paul and I had a choice, keep up, or turn around.
We were committed to find elk too, so we traversed another canyon that looked like perfect elk territory, following the elk trails all the way to the bottom, just to go right back up it. After several hours we took a quick 5 minute break on a landing that overlooked a convergence of canyons into a creek bottom and started mewing. After a few minutes we finally heard that subtle sound of elk talking back to us. We had several elk mewing and responding directly to our calls.
We quickly set up, with Brad at the top of the ridge, Paul and I moved about half way down the ridge on the edge of the re-prod. All of us calling and doing our best to sound like some happy cows that want some company. The snapping and popping of limbs and brush indicated the herd was interested in company too and was on their way to join us.
The only elk to show up was is gorgeous bull as he climbed out of the creek bottom and walked out in to the clearing to rake some ferns. Shortly thereafter he bedded down, so I started my ultra stealthy creep through the jack-firs towards him. As he faded in and out of sleep, he was still on alert. If I made a sound louder than a bird in the brush, he would flick his ears at me and stare. Although I had about 90 yards of brush between him and I still froze, sometimes on one leg, until he looked away. Muscles burning, I crept to within 40 yards of him. He stood up three times during that creep only to lay back down with his back to me. He caught me once with no cover in the FTD man pose, standing on my left leg, bow in left hand extended in front of me and my right arm holding onto the tree behind me, with my right leg in the air. Holding that pose for two minutes as the bull stared me down, I'm sure is why I can't do stairs easily today.
The bull showed his displeasure at my pose by barking at me and walked into the re-prod. I quickly got into my shooting position and started mewing. I heard Paul up the hill start mewing too, which brought the bull back out into the clearing giving me a broadside 40 yard shot.
My arrow sailed completely through him and instantly blood started pouring out of him. He ran a few yards and I stopped him with another mew, and drew for a second shot, but before I released, I heard a missile coming from up the hill as Paul's arrow punched right through him. He didn’t go far before I quickly sent another arrow to take his last breath.
I couldn't have asked for a more rewarding experience. This hunt had all my favorite elements of what makes me love hunting so much. Good friends, beautiful country, exhausting hikes, quick, clean kill, and rewarding harvest.

I hate to be that guy, but I'm pretty certain that you shooting the animal with the intention of her tagging it falls under "party hunting" which is a serious big game violation. You may want to rethink your post.
-
Hes just another hunter trying to kill an elk. When the two arrived at the animal they reviewed the kill an determined that Amber's arrow was the first blood arrow (1st shot that will mortally kill the animal). Although hunter 2 wanted the bull for himself..the prevailing law of the land prevails and alas...Amber gets to tag the bull..better luck next time Paul...no illegal activity here!
Im typing from the woods...aint no elk in Western Wa tempted by my weak ass calling...Good job Amber!

Thanks for the "help" but I would suggest in order to "not be that guy" you should actually know the law prior to becoming that guy. Party hunting means I would have shot the bull and only me and then had her tag it. There is not law that says while a animal is still alive if she shot it that I can not, that is silly. Her shot was a fatal one, mine just made that process even faster, thus she tagged HER bull.

Poor thing!!! got stuck twice in the vitals!!! DIE DIE DIE :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

it was fun, I snuck in on a nice 5x5 and 4x4 fighting and messed up a 60 yrd gimme and shot under the big 5x5..... I have never missed a elk and dont really ever miss.... I had my tag filled and his head on the wall before I drew and I rushed it.... I still can not believe it.... first year I have not stuck a bull in a few..... I had other chances but messed em up... this one was a slam dunk!!! oh well all I care about is that Amber got one, I have 5 days left in oregon to get it done.

we were 8 miles in, the pack to the landing was fine, then the hike back down to the rig was not bad, a call to security and a open gate... elk out... easy peasy.

thats cute, i was trying to "help" so you wouldnt have self incriminating stuff posted. here is a direct copy paste from the regs book.
Party hunting:
Party hunting is defined as shooting
at or killing big game or turkeys for
another, killing big game or turkeys
with the intention of having another
person tag the animal; or tagging a big
game animal or turkey that another
person has killed.
Party hunting is illegal for big game
and turkey, except for hunters with
disabilities who have a designated
hunting companion as defined in
WAC 232-12-828.
so, killing big game with the intention of having another person tag the animal, it says it right there. you absolutely shot that bull with the intention of her tagging it. whatever, incriminate yourself if you want to. i was trying to help but i guess you know better than i do huh? man im such a jerk

The animal was still alive when I shot it, she shot it first... If I would have shot and killed it, then had her tag it.. that is party hunting. She shot it, so did I, since her shot was the first Kill shot, she tagged the elk... nothing illegal abut that.
-
If you were both legal to shoot that animal then what went down was totally legal. She had the First fatal shot therefore it is hers to hang a tag on. Had her shot not been fatal than the first fatal shot would have rightfully been the one to tag the animal. If she had missed or just wounded the animal and the second hunter made the fatal shot and then allowed the first shooter to tag the animal than that would be considered party hunting in my opinion.

yup, we had tags, legal bows/arrows/broadheads, legal shooting light lol all of it..... some people just want to be the police I guess.

Good job to the lucky lady!!
As far as the party hunting part, looking at the picture, that elk has three holes in it, and according to the write-up, she shot it first, his arrow was second, then while down, but still breathing, she shoots it again...sounds like her elk to me.
-
Nice Job Amber! Congrats on your bull. Nice write up. Hope to fish with you and Paul again someday soon.

Way to ruin a post bango. Could've just sent a pm about it instead of putting it in this thread. :dunno:My partners and I would have done the same. Congrats to the lucky lady!

I love it when guys post things like this. " I'm just trying to help". If that were the case I think a PM would have been the right way to go.
