Anyone else draw this on the forum?
This is my first draw for anything and I am freaking out I am so excited! :yike:
I will be taking at least a week off (have my own business/work from home so hopefully will be up there pretty much the whole time).
I've got a decent camera but wondering if I need to get more of a zoom... How close on average will I get to most deer do you think?
-
Nice tag and you should have fun. Hope for some snow.
-
Good tag if you get away from the roads. Here is a thread http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,127812.msg1698548.html#msg1698548 (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,127812.msg1698548.html#msg1698548) worth reading, it will keep you grounded and show you exactly how NOT to treat that tag.
-
Ha! Thanks. I read that one months ago... Definitely not going to be like that... I am just thrilled to have the chance to see all the deer and get out in the woods. I read another post months ago of an archery hunter and his hunt. This guy did it right if you ask me... http://www.huntfishnw.com/index.php?topic=3338.0 (http://www.huntfishnw.com/index.php?topic=3338.0) ... Wasnt that you that hunted with him? that sounded like an amazing time. If that was you what did you guys use for cameras and lenses?
I do need to go back and read older posts for info though... There seems to be a lot of good info already out there for this hunt.

Not sure you needed the tag to take a bunches of pictures like you mentioned..

Looks like you live close enough to Entiat to give it your full attention, too. There are clearly some jaw dropping bucks in that unit and no matter what I am sure it will be a great experience with great memories. Keep us updated on your experience.
I still feel sorry for the buck that guy shot last year. A great animal like that deserves to be respected. That look on his face like somone tinkled in his corn flakes was priceless.

I know, but while I'm out there just would be fun... and I'd like to share the images with y'all. :)

I hear ya, was both funny and sad. If I end up waiting till the last day and end up shooting a spike I'll have nothing but smiles. I mean I really want a trophy but that's really just a bonus.

My dad drew it as well, should be an awesome hunt. Have property in the unit and will be up there the whole season!! Enjoy seeing the animals, glass, put some miles on the boots, they are still around without snow but if it does be prepared with chains and winch that can be attached to front or back! Just have fun and it'll be successful!
-
entait is a special place its really special with snow.pray for snow. should be a great hunt i will be looking foward to seeing how it ends up.

That pic of him is priceless lol.

I'm hoping for snow but I'm also kinda nervous of the snow and mud... :'( With how much people say that they can get so bad. I'm planning on getting chains all around and wouldn't mind just putting them on and leaving them on if there's any snow/mud etc. Am I going to be pretty much good with that setup?
Are there any specific roads that I should just stay off of completely if there's snow/mud? If anyone can tell me roads to avoid almost certain death that would be awesome :chuckle:
-
If you go up oklahoma gulch or Stelico those hills can be slippery. I have chained up sideways before cause i have said piece of cake. Atleast chain up the front. All 4 would be better. Dont think just case you have exspensive wheels and tires you can go anywhere. Good Luck have a great time. Camp up thee if you can its a great time.
-
Cool, thanks for the info Jstone. I'll have to check out those roads soon so I have an idea of what I would be getting into when the weather's bad. Yeah planning on camping/living up there as much as possible!
-
The funny thing is that I thought the deer he killed was a super stud deer. I know it's by no means a B&C record holder, but seriously it takes more than hard work and a good tag for that anyways.... It takes a lot of luck!
-
It was a good buck and if he thought it was such crap, he should have let it walk. Doesn't show much for his character. that thread was interesting to say the least.
-

:yeah:
I re read that thread and it was all over the place. In the end I think he shot a nice buck. I assume he passed a few like that through out the hunt hoping for the 170-180 that he wanted and in the end shot that one as a "last day buck". I am glad that he got a buck and disappointed he wasn't happier with it. He should have been happy to get one. 25 tags in an area doesn't always mean 25 filled tags, it is hunting.
Anyways to those of you that have the tag this year... good luck, hunt hard, hope for snow but don't get discouraged if there is none. Those bucks can still be found, it is just a little tougher. If you see deer in an area one day keep checking it, new deer will move in. If you bump a deer one day, go back to that area, odds are he will still be around, sometimes a day or two later but keep checking.
I hope to see some success photos with big smiles and happy endings, good luck out there.

Payne good luck to you as well, dad has hunted the valley since the 70s and I'm getting close to 20 years of experience in it, the potential is there but definitely not the unit it once was, we'll be in a black Toyota Tacoma and a white ford PU
-
we'll be in a black Toyota Tacoma and a white ford PU
Cool, I should be in a mid 90's green toyota with matching canopy.
-
AAAWWWW!!! I'm so pumped!
Nov 1st is taking forever to get here!
-
Good luck
-
Snowing hard about 3,000 feet in the Methow. I assume its similar in the Entiat
-
Good luck! I have the chiwawa permit and it should be a good hunt with this weather pushing in. I had the same permit 5 yrs ago and it really got good the second weekend on. I'm going to start hunting the second weekend. Keep us updated on what you are seeing!
-
Keeping an eye on this one, you have a great attitude and this should be an awesome hunt for you.

Good luck to you too!
I just hope that I don't shoot the first nice buck I see and then it's all over... haha! I don't think I will, but it might be hard! either way it will be great!
I ordered a spotting scope camera adaptor, so hopefully I'll be able to share the deer porn with ya'll. :chuckle:
-
Thanks!! I'm going to get an adaptor for my spotter as well!! You may need someone to hold your ammo for the first couple of days!! But when you see "him" you will know!
-
Weekend was a good time! Saw roughly 100 deer, 20 bucks and about 8 bigger bucks all similar to the pic of the four-point. Saw a big 3x4 with a group of does rutting pretty hard. Heading out tomorrow for a couple days!
-
Here's another of the same.
-
and another...
-
Boy oh boy....that would be a hard one to let walk. Nice buck.
-
:yike: you think anyone would pass that one up?

Payne sounds like what we saw, a few bucks chasing pretty hard! About 4 to 5 mature deer a day.. I think you past me opening day while I was glassing.. Good luck to ya, headed back up til Saturday!

Hopefully I didn't screw you up! I didn't know you went up that way! Good luck to you too!
-
you better try and find that buck again :twocents: but I respect you for holding out.
-
That is a pretty nice buck. I think I would have had to shoot that one. Who is holding your ammo? It is early in the hunt and I am sure you want to enjoy it a little longer, hopefully one like that is still available later.
-
That one would have been pretty tempting. Nice job
-
Wow...gonna tag along on this one. That's a solid buck. Not sure I could've passed.
Anxious to see how this one plays out.
-
Tagging... On my way up to Chewuch for my own late hunt later this week. Looking forward to seeing the same......
-
Payne, I keep coming back to this thread hoping for a little insight as to what it is about that buck that allowed you to not shoot. Was it in a spot that you couldn't get to? Is it that the back forks are a little weak? Do you think this deer is going to be around for a while? Have you seen bigger? Is there something in particular that you are looking for? Maybe non-typical or something is what you are looking for. From what I have heard about the herd decline in that unit this time of year I am thinking that is a pretty good buck for that tag.
I am sure there is a reason I am just dying to know what it is. Good luck on the hunt and I hope you get what you are looking for.
-
 Seeing those numbers of deer there should be a Grand Daddy close... :twocents:
-
Nice buck! What do you guys think he scores?
-
:camp:
-
Nice buck! What do you guys think he scores?
Total guess...but I put him in the 165" range.
-
160ish would be my guess.
-
Nice buck but good pass.
-
160 is my guesstimate. Weak back forks, not very wide, looks young. I agree, good pass...just not sure I could hold off if I didn't have someone holding my ammo for me.
-
I agree good pass!! keep burning the boot leather and sitting behind the spotter!!
-
Following along..hope you find a masher...

 You have my blood pumping, C'mon 20th!! :archery_smiley:
-
:) reading this is getting my blood pumping for the 20th! I have late archery tag for entiat and can't wait for it. I and a buddy will be up there from the 19th to the 30th hoping to put a arrow through one of those big rutting bucks! jbar maybe i will see you up there will be in a grey ford f150. good luck to the rifle hunters!

Had to come back to work for a day to two... >:(
I didn't go for that one because for one it's too early! I really want the experience of the hunt as much or more as I want to tag one. Two is like others have said that it's around 160... and luckily I've seen a couple like this one. Hopefully I'll have another chance with a similar one towards the last couple days if I don't find a bigger one.
I'll probably end up shooting a small two point on the last day to fill the freezer. That's what I get for not pulling the trigger... haha We shall see.
I'll try and get more pics too, if they stick around long enough for me to fumble around with that thing.
-
Id rather spend the whole hunt on such a special tag learning, searching and experiencing every minute of each day waiting for a monster and then in the end tagging a smaller one knowing I gave 100% with no regrets.

That is a great attitude! Make the hunt yours, and if you don't get that "big" one, great opportunity to get a decent buck the last couple days all the same!! Have fun!!
-
As you mentioned, wanting to experience the hunt as much or more as you want to tag one, is what's it's all about to me. Might not get that chance for many years. Enjoy this moment, because it'll be over before you know it. If you do see the right one, you'll know it without even having to debate.

Tag... Can't wait to see how this turns out

Any update :dunno:
-
Came back last night to work today, heading back tomorrow. For a couple days there the action slowed down for a bit with the full moon, clear sky and warm days. Although when the weather got cold it seemed to get back to being pretty cool...
I haven't been taking as many pics because it takes a bit of messing around with the scope adaptor to get it all setup right and a lot of the times they are gone before I get it all setup, sorry about that, I've got a couple more to throw on here though.
Most of the nice ones are around 160 class, three or so a day, I really hope that I at least see something that is in the 170 or higher range on this hunt but if not, I'll live. Normal hunting season it would be great to see just one 160 class and I'm seeing that everyday. With the cold weather it should only get better... I hope!!!
Now for the more interesting stuff, the more special bucks I've seen.
- true spike: must have been a three incher. and full on rut. Pretty funny. :chuckle:
- 5x4: He had an extra point right in between the front fork on the right side, about 4 inches long or so, I'm guessing. If he had a match on the other side I would have taken him for sure. He was 24-26 wide but not all that tall fairly think horns though.
- 2x2: 24in wide and tall. When I first saw him he was looking right at me, it was a surprise when he turned his head!
- 3x4, 3xStub, 2xStub: On the first day we saw a 3x4 that had about a 24-26 in span with a massive body, the biggest one i've seen since I've been up there. One day later I saw him again and in one day he went from normal buck to full on rut with about 6 does, beating up bushes left and right and running from doe to doe. I saw him fighting another buck just going to town. A couple days later I spot what had to be him again, with such a huge body and full on rut, although at some point he lost one side of his horns and was left with about a 6 inch stub. A couple days later I saw him again and was now a 2xStub. Looked like he lost the back so he was just left with the front fork. I am dieing to see the bucks that he's been fighting, but I'm starting to wonder if he has just lost it and has been fighting trees and or rocks... haha
Another funny thing that happened, I was camped in the Mudd area, I was heading out in the morning and a beaver tipped a tree right over the road the night before, :yike: was able to move it enough to get by though.
That's about it for now. Hope this cold weather is helping! Keep you guys posted!
-
Payne
What rig are you driving? I saw a 5x5 with eye guards two days ago. He was not very wide but he had mass. Wish I could have got pictures to show.
From what I have seen in the last few days. The bucks are ready...but the girls are not. The bucks are running around with their heads cut off but the girls are playing hard to get. I glassed over 150 deer today with very few big bucks pushing does. The bucks I saw were running from group to group.
Good Luck and can't wait to see how the final chapter plays out.
-
nice 4x4
-
Pretty crappy image here of the 3xStub... before he went to 2xStub.

I'm driving a greenish 95 toyota truck with a canopy, if you see me feel free and say hey!
When you say 5x5 with eye guards are you counting the eye guards to make it a 5x5? Just curious. Sounds like a cool one!
Yeah I agree, lots of does without bucks for the most part.
-
No, 6x6 if you count eye guards. He had a lot of mass was only 23-24 wide but trashy. I was glassing him from about 600 yards. Wish I could have got closer for a picture but I had the family and it was getting dark quick.

Ok, yeah I don't count the eye guards either... Dang, I'd love to see that guy! My trigger finger in getting itchy... Hopefully I can hold out!

I think the best is yet to come. This cold weather should kick the girls into estrus. I think the big boys will show real soon. I notice the deer are not going to bed until around 10:00 to 10:30 and are back up moving by 2:30. Lots of activity and lots of does. The big bucks are there they are just still in hiding.
-
Well, I couldn't hold out quite till the end...
-
:IBCOOL: now post a pic
-
I kept seeing this 5x4 and just couldn't get him out of my head!
-
Hunted 15 days, nearly froze sleeping in the back of my truck, saw a crazy amount of deer (and nice bucks I would normally freak out about in general season), other animals including a white mink, met some great people and had one of the best experiences in my life.
-
Nice Buck!!! Congrats!!!
Is that a whitetail/Muley Cross?
-
Great buck! love the double throat patch. Nice work doing the tag justice!
-
Nice wide buck there. Congrats!
:brew:

When I get caught back up with stuff around here I'll write a bit more of a story...

That's a full blown mule deer.
Awesome buck. Congrats. No way would I ever be in a position to "keep" seeing that buck. He'd be dead right away.

Congratulations! Great Buck!
Way to hold out and have patience!!
-
Hey Payne....is his back left broken? How wide is he? Thanks
jrebel
-
Great buck, I would have pulled the trigger on that one also, love the 5th point.
Good job on the hunter orange and tag on in the photo, you covered all of your bases. Should be nothing but praise on this thread. Well except the truck is too close for a real hunter. Just kidding, you have to shoot them where they are and sometimes they are just close to the truck.
Sounds like a warm bed is going to feel great after that two weeks.
-
You'll never get him out of your head now! He'll be on your wall for a daily reminder. :chuckle:
Nice one.
-
Hey Payne....is his back left broken? How wide is he? Thanks
jrebel
Yeah back left fork broke on his fall down the hill. The pic really doesn't show how steep that hill is. It was actually kinda hard getting him down the rest of the way, because I didn't want to damage him anymore than he already was. The good thing though is that we found most of what broke off so taxidermist should be able to patch it up good.
-
Very cool buck congrats
-
Here's the story (sorry it's a bit long)
So where to start with the story…
I guess I’ll start about in the middle of my hunt. I had been seeing on average of about 3 - 5 nice bucks a day. Nice as in the type of buck that I would shoot in a heartbeat if I saw them in the regular season. 3 and 4 points 18-24.
First encounter: Around the 8th of Nov. I saw the 5x4. At first I was just impressed by his width then when I got the spotting scope on him and saw the extra horn I was pretty excited. But held off since I had a lot more hunting time and I didn’t think that he would be in the 170+ range. So I pasted… later that day we ran into him again and decided to sneak in just to see if I could get into a good range. The wind was blowing hard and in the perfect direction to let us get on the other side of a ridge and pop up on top to see him and his does. As we poked our heads over the top and we were spotted, they ran and I blew my bleat and they stopped at 150 yards. I could have had him there no problem. So in doing this I was a bit more satisfied knowing that I could have had him.
Second encounter: About a week later I ran into him again and I decided I would stalk him again and shoot him because I felt a cold coming on. I climbed to the top of a hill and found an awesome spot where I glassed 4 or 5 nice bucks four points. It was one of the best day of hunting so far. I saw bucks as close as 30 feet away and one was the 5x4. It was so cool up there I decided to pass once again… I also saw three fights up there. Two smaller 4 points fighting about 30 yards away and two 2 points going at it. When I decided to walk back down the hill I ran into another big 4 point, although his horns were not that nice. I bumped him and a doe and they ran in the direction I last saw the 5x4. So I thought, I really should peak over the side of the hill and see if I saw a confrontation. The doe ran right into the 5x4 and went and mingled with his does… Haha, I bet that the 5x4 thought he was pretty cool. The 4 point looked pissed and they went at it. The 5x4 got his butt whooped and ran off, loosing all his does! This day made my trip.
Third encounter: As the days went on, I was getting more and more ready to end my hunt. 3 days after the second encounter with the 5x4 a friend met up with me early in the morning and we took off in my truck. I told myself, if I see that 5x4 again and have the chance I am taking him. Only 30 minutes and we run into about 8 does. This many does, I figured there had to be a nice buck running with them. We came around the corner and there he was. I through up my binos and waited just a bit for the head turn and I saw it (5x4)! Seconds later I had my gun on him, then he decided to move! But it’s ok he just wanted to be closer to his does, which was closer to me. Waited for him to stop for a second and BOOM! He jumped and ran 30 feet, then stopped, stood there for a second and tumbled down the hill. I was happy, that he wanted to make my packing him out that much easier although the hill was so steep I was worried that his fall might mess up his horns or fur. He rolled about 30 yards down the hill and finally stopped. When I got up to him I found that he did break one of the back horns off, but we were able to find it, so I think the taxidermist will be able to mend it.
I admit, the final hunt was not that glorious. But I really could care less… all the time I put in and what I had seen, I was satisfied. I had stalked him two other times so on that level it did not matter. In the end I shot him at about 110 yards in the heart, so I’m happy that his suffering was minimal.
From the beginning, like most I was going for something freakish. I just hadn’t seen anything close to freakish and the biggest and best in my eyes that I had seen was the 5x4 so I feel extremely lucky that he wasn’t shot before I finally decided to, since I had seen him so many times.
Also, I am a sucker for horns with an extra kicker or so, just enough to give them some unique character, that and the size did it for me (finally) with the 5x4.
I didn’t see the freak deer, but I saw more than enough very nice deer to have an amazing time that I not soon forget and from here on out, you just might see me up there without the tag, just glassing, photographing and enjoying nature.

Good Buck  is that Oklahoma Gulch

Sounds like you got the most out of the hunt. Way to go. I was surprised to not hear about sleeping in that truck. that had to be cold but good motivation to get it done.

Oh man, sleeping in my truck!
The first half of the hunt was great. I'd just get done hunting eat a quick meal and hit the sack at like 6:30 or so since there was nothing better to do.
The second half of the hunt when it got cold :yike: I was sleeping in two sleeping bags (one inside the other) with a wool blanket under me, one on top of me and wore long johns, sweat pants and sweat shirt! and that was just enough to keep me comfortable. I'd wake up in the morning with all my water solid ice.
I used the big buddy heater in the mornings when getting out of bed but was nervous about running it all night.

Great story, Great memories, and an awesome buck with lots of character. A buck's score is overrated! I'd take a unique rack over score any day! Congrats!
-
Great buck Payne. Love five points! Glad to hear that about the buddy heater. I freaked when I saw the pic. We've lost a couple hunters the last couple years.

Take it from a old guy. Go to town and spend $11.00 on a good Hot Water bottle.
Boil water while cooking dinner throw it in your bag and sleep like a baby all night.
Next day re-boil same water ditto.

Man that brings back memories! That is how I camped with Dad on the first couple hunting trips we went on when I was a little kid. I spent a few nights in Colville late archery a few years ago in the back of mine when it got down into single digits. Mr. Heater to heat the space up in the morning and when going to sleep and the rest of the night, piles of blankets!

Thanks, I am curious what he would score though... my guess is somewhere between 160-170, but I don't know. I'll probably measure it out at some point just for the heck of it.
Does the extra point help much?

That is a good idea!

Might sound weird but I didn't want to get very comfortable or complicated... We get really comfortable for elk camp and it's great, but for this I wanted to keep my head in the game... I don't know, I guess I'm weird! :dunno: As long as I was comfortable enough to get a decent night of sleep, but not comfortable enough that I would ever think of sleeping in, get lazy etc... yeah maybe I'm just weird... haha!

That's the story I was looking for. It gets cold over there especially if you are in a vehicle. Way to push through and stay focused on the prize. That is a great buck and it sounds like you earned it with the effort.
I love the fifth point and score doesn't matter, I think you are right on the money with your guess and would be really happy with that deer. It is better than most that will fall this year. Good job.

Payne,
I would have to say congrats. The fact that you slept in the truck in this weather is dedication. I think I would have been driving back to Wenatchee every night.

Scratch that just noticed your thread, reading now with excitement!

I am so happy for you, Payne. I re-read this thread and I had to chuckle at the first page and the difference between how you went about your hunt and the other guy, whose thread was linked. You clearly gave this hunt the attention it deserved and I am sure the memories and experience were as rewarding as the beautiful buck you killed. I am looking fowarding to seeing him again on this site post trip to the taxidermist.
Congrats!
Eric
