Instead of milking you guys along, I'll post the meat and potatoes and then if you'd like I'll take you down the journey of this years hunt. Some of you might remember The Hide and Seek buck. It hangs on my wall and I have been trying to top it for the last 20plus years. I think I finally did it. Here is my 2014 Longbow kill. At least my multiseason tag lasted more than an hour this year.

Classic Mule deer, wide, thick 4x4 with eye guards....text book

Typical of my falls here lately I had to juggle my vacation/myseason/ along with the girls soccer. School starts and so does varsity soccer along with club ball for my youngest. Though they don't mind me missing a game or two, I find it hard to. They are only young for so long. That being said, I am only going to be able to do this kind of hunting for so long as well.
Being out of shape more than ever with working doubleshifts and all of the bench sitting, I was going to break my assault into two section this year instead of making it in one day. Of course that got pushed and I was rushed to do it in one. I made it. I am not going to talk distance as most probably don't believe me anyway. Its a tough haul and much of it isn't on a trail.
Here is my camp. Idabooner designed this out of a parachute for essentially elk hunting down in the blues. Its the lightest material around and is about 30 years old. I really put it to the test this season.

Bone you never cease to amaze me. I look forward to your hunts every year and you never fail to impress me. Awesome buck!

THe first days hunt went well. I was slow at getting out of the sack, but I did, and I started up the mountain. Its a good hard hour push to get where I start hunting. I don't like to camp up there as I don't want to "tell" the deer I am there. That's my excuse anyways, mostly I camp where I do, because that's as close as I can get before "dieing".
The first morning went well. I immediately got onto two bucks. A small two and a nice buck with him. I closed to within 30 and stood and watched for a long time as they fed. I didn't want to spook them so I backed out and then took a pic with my daughters little PS camera. Sorry for the crap pics. I am here to hunt, not photograph, though for most of this trip I wish I had my camera.
This was the first buck I let walk.

He was a good three, and by all means a buck I often notch on and then am done and feel I could do better. Not this year. What you cant see in the pics is the weather wasn't cooperating very well. The wind was gusting and being very unpredicatable. By all means, a bowhunter probably should have stayed in bed. This will haunt me later. I made it up to the top of the ridge I like to hunt in the rocks. It was really blowing on top. It was near lunch time so I sat and munched on some jerky and a snickers bar and some trail mix. NOT what this boy is used to let me tell you. At this point I am noticing a complete lack of usual deer activity. If you had been watching the news you can recall all the floods in the Methow. Well that storm hit the high country as well, and really washed the mountain. I suspected that the animals may have pulled out for the time being and they hadn't returned as the weather had been cooler. :dunno: I made my normal hunt through the rocks and found zilch. I spotted a buck down in a meadow below me. Well lookie here, its the guy I passed on.
Nice camo don't you think?

Beutiful Buck and Country. How far of a shot?
-
I thought it was interesting that he bedded down and looked up. Where most in that region seem to bed high and watch down, which is how I usually am able to get in on them.
I'll get to that jstone.

Awesome buck and congrats.. I Woukd say this is my favorite hunt I look forward to reading about every year!
-
Along for the whole ride. Keep at it, wordsmith!
-
Always happy to read about your hunt, thanks for sharing bone

My goal was to check out a little basin tucked high in the rocks where I killed my buck last year. I was standing in the same spot I released the arrow on that buck when I took the previous pic. As you recall I talked about the deluge that washed the mountain pretty hard. Well this was one of those places. It was dicey last year to cross but now with the wash. I managed to work my way into it and rattled my way down it to start to cross. By now I was making all sorts of racket and the bedded buck had me pinned down of course. I was surprised he was holding. In fact that kind of captured my attention....that and falling off the mountain. I probably dropped off the hill more than I should have, just to experiment with that deer. About this time I casually glanced to my left. and here was a buck bedded, right in a small green flat spot. Right in the middle of it. He was of course watching me. What the heck. I picked up my binos (deer was at about 40). He was almost 28 wide and his antlers were heavy and shaped very V like. Anyways I looked through the binos at him and he was all hard horned. That was real mass. He was getting nervous and he stood up. When he stood he turned his head. He was 4x4 with huge mass, but short points. his bones were really dark. I pulled and arrow, set on him and fired. Just about this time a huge wind gust hit. Oblivious in my focused state.......I didn't see where he was hit, but he fell backward and piled up, flipped and flopped and lay there. I was done for the season. Then he began to stir and he stood up and got his feet. WTH. I pulled another arrow and he took off out of site trotting. I figured I would here him go down shortly and tumble off the mountain in the rocks. NOPE!!! About that time I picked him up about 300 yards away trotting. HOLY CRAP. I could see the exit wound.....High and to the rear, right in that upper paunch beneath the spine. The deer disappeared. I figured I would let him bed down and finish off. I explored the upper basin and came back to the scene.

Congrats on a dandy Douglas!!!

What you cant tell much from these pics is that this is literally a little small oasis on a steep mountain. I knew the exit was just a small trail through some rocks as I hauled my deer out it last year, and puckered most of the way. I commenced the trailing. I knew the shot was a pass though as I saw the exit wound. There was little blood where he went down at first. This was concerning. I started picking up some and probably everytime he hit the ground running he bled more. Drop here, drop there...... I followed the trail to where I had last seen him then rounded the ridge. He had started to climb. I followed him for about 300 feet more, then I lost him in the deep grass, where he mixed with other deer tracks in the meadow. I figured hed go to a clump of shrub then lay down. I spent the rest of the day til almost dark looking. NOTHING...... At this time the weather was really picking up. High winds and getting dark up above. I kicked it off the mountain and headed to camp.
At this time I was ready to burn my tag and the rest of the hunt would be spent looking for this guy. If you have ever been in this situation, you know what was going on in my head. Just as I hung my head and headed for camp, the skies opened up. I got back to camp soaked, cold and hungry, and my gear was starting to fail. I had also a camp visitor. Thankfully he enjoyed this more than my mountain house I had stashed in a nearby tree.

Its very difficult to describe the weather as most of you probably thought, yeah whatever. I think Yakima was in the 90s. The winds were bad all night. While laying in my bag, I heard 14 trees/snags come down. It poured along with the wind. My parachute was saturated and water poured in along two seems. My camp space was pretty small under there. I had stashed a small ground cloth from a previous trip and used that to cover my bag under the leantu...that helped. It was a long night. I woke to daylight and still very high winds. It had actually almost dried a bit thanks to the winds. Today would be spent looking for my buck and exploring. I intended on taking a different route to check a different drainage and loop into on top of where my buck might have been. I had two routes to choose from. The first was barren and straight up and down, and the other held game usually with minimal cover in spots. I started up the first but the winds were unbearable, especially when it switched to snow and ice. I caught a deer trail and had my head tucked from the driving ice. I heard something and looked up. Stodding (bounding) off the mountain was my buck. There was no mistaking those antlers. he crossed right in front of me and disappeared over the hill. I gained enough ground to see below me to see his escape but he didn't come out that way. I tracked him up over the hill. It appeared he had fishhooked into the draw I was going to go up. It was a bottleneck at the top. I should see him. There was no blood and he looked healthy. Hmmmmmmmmmm I started up the hill, pausing in cover when I could.

I worked my way up seeing all sorts of wildlife sign, but never my buck. I finally reached near the top. The weather was crazy. I had to walk out a small small trail over a slide chute to the pass. I took my pack off and layed it and my bow in the trees. I walked out onto the trail, crossed the chute and then got down on my belly. The winds were 75-80mph I guessed as I reached the brink and peered over. It was hard to digest what I was seeing. Even if there were deer in this cirque, there would be no way for me to get them, and I obviously wasn't going to do anything in this wind. I snapped a couple pics for future reference and was staring through my binos when I saw Carl. Now I can only describe him as a monster. Full velvet. I would swear he had a fifth point on one side. Mass mass and more mass. He was up and feeding at noon. I tried to grab some shots of him with my little camera, but at 800 yards and with 80 mph wind, they didn't turn out worth beans.

Congrats again, dude. That is a hell of a buck.

I climbed down the mountain until I found a great vista and and great spot to stay out of the wind. I spent the next 7 hours patiently watching waiting for a deer to appear or for that buck to show himself. I am not sure where he ended up. I don't know if he went over the top. I don't think he could have gotten out one side or the other without me seeing him and hearing him, though that might be debatable with the weather. He was certainly healthy enough to live when I saw him.......no sign of him, just other critters including some goats which were a welcomed site, and a mom and pup coyote. I watched them mouse and watched close for any reaction when they cut the deers initial run.....nothing. I went back to camp at dark. Still blowing.
I got up the next morning and headed home. My hunt was done for now. I wondered about the deer I lost, the mistakes I made and about the buck of my dreams in that other drainage. I started researching an approach on him and had some good discussions with friends and family. 4 days of soccer and family and the common cold and I was on my way to a new local to get Carl.

This was also a brutal march to an area I have never been. I was in a big push as my daughter had a soccer game on Tuesday night. I figured if I hiked in, harvested a buck and then came out Tuesday I would make it. Optimistic or delusional, or obsessive, yo umake the judge. I got camp set up on one of the flattest spots around. I actually carved a bed in the mountain and set my fly up. I upgraded my fly for this trip. it was a bit heavier but would withstand a bit more weather.
Camp II

It is fun to come off the mountain and read this!

I set off up the mountain. It was a couple hour hike gaining a lot of altitude. I got to about where I needed to be. I came into contact with two different bucks. Both 3.5 year old class 3x4, 4x4s. I could have gotten them both but let them be. Stupid critters would jump then come back to see what I would do I think. I wasn't hunting. I was pushing hard and watching my watch the whole way. It would be close to get into where that buck was at but I would be short on daylight. I made the patient choice. I cut across to the ridge paralleling the one I wanted and looked to exactly where I wanted to climb it. Marked it in my mind and headed back to camp. I got up the next morning and made my attack on the mountain. I knew I would miss the "morning hunt" and was banking on him eating at noon like he was a week ago. A couple hours of effort put me on the mountain. I remember remarking to myself this is the thickest stuff (I used another word in my head) I have ever been in and that is saying something. Just as I made the top of the ridge I kicked a deer. That would haunt me for the rest of the day. Was that my deer, or did it scare my deer. I slipped out into the basin making sure I wasn't sillouetted. I put my good optics to use and scoured the country. I tried to place myself where I could see and make a move if I needed to without exposing myself, yet be in a spot to be able to do something. I picked up movement in the shadows across the basin. Its got horns.....its a nice buck, is that him......I'll be damned, it was the buck I had shot the week previous. I guess he did go over the top????? I was relieved that he had made it and that my mistake wasn't a complete waste.
I heard tinkling, like gravel bouncing. I looked and looked and nothing. The wind had just switched to the back of my head. I wasn't sure what it was doing down in the basin. It was gusty then dead, then a gust then dead. I noticed you could hear the gust coming...... I heard it again. Looking through the binos I picked up a deer right in front of me.....about 40 yards. I could hear him rubbing now so knew it was a buck. antler tip, more antler. OH MY WORD. Its him. I had to look away, concentrate and douse the buck fever. I am not one that gets buck fever, but if you don't have some sort of excitement in a situation like this you shouldn't be there. I stood up....I didn't have a shot. I ever so slowly slipped up the ridge about 10 yards. He was feeding, rubbing antlers, feeding, moving a bit. I scuttled some gravel. He froze, intent on me. I froze. I knew he knew I was there. I could only see a pie plate of hair.....it was his neck. I HATE NECK SHOTS. He pulled back a little, then settled. I knew he was going to burst. I pulled back. I could hear a gust coming......I let go.......whack right into the neck. He launched forward and down, then turned back and started up the hill in a slide chute. The gust hit. I couldn't hear, then I heard him scrambling....I got a glimpse of him moving in the chute. I grabbed another arrow. I got onto the chute. I told myself the minute I see animal, I am releasing......animal I let it fly. It was a very long shot.....100 yards maybe. I would never do it as my first shot.....the arrow arched right into the deer. Carl fell back and out of site down the chute. There was a big crash. Silence. Now the trembling started. Man I was excited. I started to bolt to get over there. WAIT........ You are going to get over there and it will look different. Where is that....find some land marks. Still silent. He is down. Go get him. I swear I flew across the steep gravel hill. My first site....

Velvet still hanging!!!!! Outstanding
-
I got harassed a bit about my field photos. It was a fair ribbing. Sorry all. 6000 feet+, usually dangling by my toenails, the fact I even have a camera is insane. Personally I am cutting the handles off my toothbrush to cut weight, that's if I take a toothbrush. LOL...... so I hope you enjoy what you get. I am more concerned about getting the deer off the mountain than what pics I come home with. I hope you enjoy. I'll get the measurements up in a bit after I get some chores done. Thank you everyone for the compliments so far. I hope you enjoyed the pitfalls and the joy of the hunt.

Awesome buck Bone, Incredible story as well, congratulations on both!
-
Awesome and well deserved buck. Great story as well. :)
-
Unreal Bone. That buck has it all. Great write up.
-
Thankyou!
I know I preach score doesn't matter on a lot of bucks, but it was killing me not having a tape on the mountain. I got down to Idabooners and he grabbed a tape measure off the wall in his shop when I pulled up. He is just short of 30 inches outside. I got home and knew hed score pretty good because he is so even and the perfect example of what Pope/Boone "likes".
He has 20+ inches of mass on each side
27 inch mains
25 inch inside.
2 inch eyeguards
the rest add up to about 194 gross and with minimal deductions I got 191 net.
Hide and Seek was 193+ gross, 178+ Net.
-
With a long bow no less, way to go. Will you have him officially scored?
-
Holy smokes Bone, that is awesome.
-
:) :IBCOOL: what it's all about

Great buck and cool hunt congrats. Mt. buck with stick and string

Awesome story and a well deserved animal on the ground. It just doesn't get any better than that. Kinda like the "Thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" but opposite.
-
Dang nice buck Doug. Great write up.
-
Kirk, I thought I might have seen you in the canyon scouting on the way home. It looked like you but not a rig I recognized. I almost whipped around and showed you, though if it hadn't been you, might have been a bit weird.
-
Way to collect some nice bone Bone! Great storey about a mountain buck and a die hard getting it done. ;)
Just curious where did yoiur first arrow hit him the week before? :dunno:
-
High and behind. in that back high paunch. Not sure what dumped him backwards unless I caught back muscle. :dunno: I thought he was done. I didn't even bother firing another arrow downrange on him. I stood there in disbelief when he got up and left.
This buck the first arrow hit him in the neck. He'd have died (and might have) from this shot, though I don't like it. He was struggling going up the slide. The second hailmary get another one into him shot hit him square between the shoulders in the back. It dropped him instantly when it hit him.
-
Nice!!! Congrats .
-

Great hunt boneaddict, I thought it was impossible to go after one particular buck in that big nasty country, and shooting a long bow. It's a big big job just to get into that country. What a great buck. Congratulations.
-
Congratulations Doug, that is one hell of a buck!

Outstanding buck!!! Those horns make you look like a small man. Congrats!

I have to thank my Dad a lot on this one. Without his words of encouragement and his excitement of his past history with the country and his knowledge, I wouldn't have made it in there.
I was just sharing a story with a friend on here. So I was really trying to cut weight on this trip. I get up on the mountain after my deathmarch and climb, and start setting up camp and pulling stuff out of my pack. A sidepocket I feel something. WTHeck. Its a fist sized hunk of Jasper (a rock). Dang kids. I told her I would carry it for her....HOME, not back up the mountain. 100 years from now some rockhound is going to discover jasper where there never was any. :chuckle:
-
 Way to go Bone! Congrats! Great buck!

I was for sure I was the only one who cut the handle off of the toothbrush!

Dang kids. I told her I would carry it for her....HOME, not back up the mountain. 100 years from now some rockhound is going to discover jasper where there never was any. :chuckle:
That's funny right there, it didn't kill you it just made you stronger! ;)
-
As always Bone, you da man! Awesome buck!!
-
Wow, just wow
-
WOW! Pretty much sums it up. Great story and even better buck. Great job Bone
-
Congrats on a Great Buck Doug. It is a beautiful deer in all aspects.
-
Always so very impressive! Just finding deer like that on that kind of country is a difficult task, but getting within longbow range and sealing the deal, amazing. Congrats, and thank you for sharing!
-
Doug,
Thats really a wonderfull deer. A great buck for a really cool old school guy. I dont know of anyone who loves mule deer as much. as Boneaddict
-
Congrats Bone! What an adventure! Could you post a pic of Hide and Seek and then a pic of this years buck? Congrats again!!! Bet it made your head feel good to see the first buck doing well.
-
 Nice Buck! Glad u get to go hunt. Congt!
:yeah:
-
Your story and pics are always inspiring! Had to read it all before posting. Don't know you personally but I can say from my internet "knowledge " of you that you are deserving of that trophy!. Thanks for sharing with us and I look forward to your buck photoessays for 2014!!
-
Again, congrats once again on a true giant in one of the hardest hunts out there.....let alone with the long bow.
-
A buck that big and only 3" of deductions? That's insane! What an amazing animal. Assuming it holds above 189 that puts him #2 in the state for Archery, doesn't it?
-
That's a giant! Congrats
-
That hunt will be hard to beat. Congrats sounds like you busted your hump doing it to. Well deserved
-
Outstanding!
-
Bone, I doubt few if any late season tag holder bucks will be better than yours, to take it with a long bow during September is off the chart! Great buck.
-

I'll see if I can dig one up C.
Thanks again everyone.

Man, if they were standing side by side I'm not sure I would make the right decision. Though I expect in that case there is no wrong decision.
I especially like the Lou Piniella hunting cap
-
It would be a good choice to have to make.
-
We're so proud of your success year after year that we're pooling our money to buy you a GPS tracking device on your cell phone. ;)
-
Thanks for putting them both up Bone. They both represent all that a giant typical mule deer buck can offer. So nice!
-

I don't think he has a cell phone......LOL
Bone, awesome story and a magnificent buck. You are doing Ernie proud with that "hawk"

I meant to say "new" cell phone. We're getting him one of those as a package deal. 8)
-
Has to be at least 25 years difference between those two pictures! :chuckle:
-
Awesome buck and story  Congrats Bone
-
Amazing Doug... I'll never forget the day you stopped in with the Hide and Seek buck... You've seen a few bigger through... and its been fascinating every year to hear the outcomes of your hunts...
Congratulations!
-
Thanks Ernie. I get to spend an aweful lot of time staring at your craftsmanship.
-
What a Freaking Stud Buck Bone! I keep coming back. Awesome.
-
Good work Bone!!! Hard work does pay out!
-
Wow, just wow. Great buck and great story. Thanks for sharing!

So cool, I'm totally stoked for you. With the long bow too?!? Epic!!
-
This is the kind of buck we expect from you every year.
Congrats Bone. How long is the journey going to be to top this one?
-
Bone...I know I already said good job but I keep coming back to many of your threads over and over. I re-read, look at the pics again....always come back again. Keep it up.
-
This thread is useless without GPS coordinates. :chuckle: Way to go Bone
-
Like others have said. I keep coming back to this and so many of your threads be it your endless photo essays of so many amazing bucks or your hunts that leave me speechless. Idk if it's the outcome of your hunts, the stories you tell, the breathtaking terrain you choose to chase deer in, or that gorgeous longbow laying next to your kills that keeps bringing me back. But I really do look forward to reading about your hunts. I can't wait for next year.
-
:yeah: Great hunt and buck Bone !
-
Congrats Bone. How long is the journey going to be to top this one?
I am guessing a very long time....... I honestly don't see topping this one, even if I draw a special permit ever.

Thank you very much guys! I am glad I can help contribute to keep this site on track of why we created it.

Well since 2007 I have been reading your stories and this one is right up there. They definately heighten the excitment for up comming hunting seasons.
-
real nice buck & enjoyed the story - grit & determination!
-
Beautiful buck and nice story!
-
X force.......this would be the buck to beat him. I have seen him a couple times, but never found his high mountain summer hidey hole. I only have seen him in late November.

-
That buck is ridiculous. I was wondering if it was him when you first told me.
-
I'm guessing he will be on his way down now. I could only be so lucky to photograph him again. I didn't see him last year. If I had, I would have been focused on getting him.
-
I forgot to mention, but was thinking it... I am very proud of what you have been able to accomplish with these sticks and strings I glue together... Thanks for putting them to such good use!!!
-
You bet! I am hopeing you stick with the trade when everything settles down. Its kind of like Bearman Ricks calls. One cannot own too many working pieces of art. There is plenty more good wood out there to turn into a Hawk.

Thanks for sharing such an inspiring story. Congratulations!

Wow, someone that can hike deep into the backcountry solo and kill large animals on a constant basis with traditional gear.. extremely impressive to me. True hunter. Congratulations, awesome buck.
-
Great Buck Bone!!!! Thanks for the details of your adventures!
-
What a stud!! Both of you! Great buck, congrats and awesome story!!!!!! Thanks for sharing!!
-
That is such a great story Bone. Not just the hunt and animal you were blessed with, but the sacrifices you had to make in order to hunt a truly magnificent animal. Many of us struggle with going hunting, or watching our children play sports. :bash: Damn Soccer! I had to miss last years hunt because my daughter was playing in the State Championship Game.(UT). But I wouldn't have missed watching the game for a 200" Buck. Her team won! Again...Thank you for telling your story, and getting my huntnblood boiling real good for this years hunt. Utah San Juan Unit. I'll be able to make my hunt this year even if they make it to state again! I hope the Soccer Gods are blessing your daughters in their games!. Thanks again Bone
-
Stud buck for sure and a great story. Thanks so much for sharing.
Man that is a beautiful deer and so symmetrical.

-
WOW!
-
Bone! Congrats! What a beauty!!!
-
That's a dandy!! Great job!!
-
What an incredible story, adventure, experience, and buck, my heart is pounding through the entire thing, I almost start sweating when you talk about seeing him 40 yards away after you came back. Congratulations, You are setting a great model for true hunting, I can only hope to work hard enough to find my own experiences like that.
-
Thanks for letting us be apart of your adventure and a special congrats for doing it with a stickbow. I've been posting my stickbow hunts on ifish.net hunting forum and receive lots of complements, you might be interested in reading them and others who have contributed. That bow is beautiful, who made it and what kind of arrow setup are you using like weight of arrow, broadhead, how heavy is the bow at 28'' draw? Hope you have much more success. :hello:
-
Congrats! Great story and one heck of a Hunt
-
70 pounds at 32". Its a little nicer than my old bow which was 80 something. My arrow set up is embarrassing light and I am working on that. I am shooting full length carbons with magnus stinger broadheads. I want to go to a heavier set up. I am not a gearhead so am probably not giving you the data you are after. Hornseeker on here made the bow. He built and sold the Sapphire Hawk series. I am fortunate enough to have two of them. This one is lighter to carry and lighter to shoot and is also faster. It has Carbon Zabrano limbs. "Zebrawood, with carbon laminate"
-
 way to go buddy! Yet another year with a great memory made!!! AWESOME Buck!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Very nice!
-
Made it official.

O man sorry to hear about that bone.

Probably third biggest I ever went after with a weapon in hand.

I can't believe I missed this thread.. Nice buck and congrats

What an incredible buck. Congrats

No kidding, lol!

I even have the spot on the wall picked out.
-
What a perfect mule deer! Congrats again
-
 Now all that thing needs is a good cape for the wall :chuckle:

Did the cape get messed up or lost in the taxidermy debacle?
-
Man what a Buck!

 Now all that thing needs is a good cape for the wall :chuckle:
:dunno:
Did the cape get messed up or lost in the taxidermy debacle?
I didn't pack it out. I killed him miles from camp which was miles from a trail, which was miles from a traihead. MtnMuley gave me a cape off his big buck and I need to go get it from the man.

 Well you can't kill them if they aren't there so you have to go to where they are and sometimes that is a long ways away.
I think there was a soccer game or something you had to get back for also. ;)

You guys should have coordinated with me, i could have brought it back in November lol.

No kidding!

If MtnMuley can get it to me in Moses Lake, I'm heading to Yakima a couple times in the next few weeks for hockey....
-
I'll get up there. i need to meet the man in person and check out some antlers. Thank you though.
