I want to go moose huntin soooo bad. I just love all the pics
-
Week 1 in the books. Had a freakin blast. I can't believe how fearless or stupid these animals are but once they start coming to calls they don't stop. It's almost like they are in a drunken frenzy or some sort of daze and don't stop until you wake them up or get real loud. It get's the heart pounding when you can't see them but know a bull is coming through the thicket thrashing trees and going to pop out 20-30 yds in front of you.
It also doesn't let you take many pics because you're on your shooting sticks just in case......
I probably saw 8-12 moose per day (half being bulls) so somewhere in the 60-80 range for the week. Obviously some bigger ones but didn't have a camera to get good photos. Early on in the week, I probably wasted too much time calling in bulls I wasn't going to shoot but it was so much fun watching them come from 300 yds right up to you I couldn't resist.
Here are some cell phone pics so must of them are inside 20 yds......A few started to come closer and weren't stopping so I got the hell out of there.
About ran this guy over...........

Momma with a couple calves

Somebody asked me one time about using cow moose piss (cow in heat) attractant. I think I would only buy that to put on either a good friend as a practical joke, or an enemy. :chuckle: Once they get their mind set that they are in love. You better have an escape plan :chuckle:
The other thing I love is you are never sure of what is going to come out of the thick because even the smallest bull can sound like a Sherman tank. FUN STUFF!
-
Big Paddles and great tine length.....not real wide and a single brow tine. He was about 60 yds away and we were in a 10 minute stare down because he had a cow with him.
-
Drop tine bull......... :chuckle:
-
Sounds like you are having a great time. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome man. You are on my bucket list hunt.

Lots and lots of video....I just can't wait to see the bull charge the camera man. Never seen a guy shaking so bad and yelling at the top of his lungs while we're standing a couple feet away. :chuckle:
He sent me a note this morning saying the clips are way better than he thought. Also said it doesn't go public until a bull is down.
-
i need a shiras for the trifecta and i sure wish i was you hold out for a wall hanger

I'm working on it buddy.....football season ended so now its full on Moose time. They are starting to settle into their wintering areas and the leaves are gone. Just need a tad of snow and things should start picking up again.
I was hoping you'd be finished by now so I could get you to help pack out in your sexy shorts.

Not going to settle because I'm worried about them falling. ;)
Been slow but hopefully the weather gets them settled down a bit. Saw the same bull over a mile away. Heading back over again this weekend and will do a better job (hopefully) of getting pics. Preferably one on the ground. BTW, the drive from the wetside sucks late at night and for quick weekend trips!

Still on cloud nine.......Here is how it unfolded.
I had to attend my daughter's first grade "play" on Thursday night but wanted to be able to hunt all day Friday so decided to leave that night. Whacker1, whom I never met, was gracious enough to offer up a place to sleep in his wall tent whenever I rolled into the mountains. He had seen a great moose and was willing to show me where to go. So, I got into his camp around 11:30 or 12 that night and we told a few stories and hit the sack. It was freaking cold. Not sure how much we slept, but had to get up a 4am. I had another spot I wanted to hit first thing in the morning so I told him I would meet back up on Saturday with him. I can't tell you guys what a great guy he is and glad I got the chance to meet him. I owe Neil!
Funny thing is, I called Coach on the way over and we talked for about 45 minutes BS'ing about hammering bulls this weekend. Glad it worked out Buddy! We did it.
-
Reading what Bone says... intrigues the sheet out of me... I am very much so looking forward to pics... and story! :o

I get to where I want to be right around daylight and spot 5-6 moose on a ridge above me at about 250 yards. I start glassing and see it's three forky bulls, a 140 class bull and a cow. Maybe she was ready for round 2? :dunno:
At about that time I see a tank come over the ridge down to meet them. He was a pig...laid out flat and I swear 60'. No brainer.......I throw some shells in and jump out of the truck on my sticks. As soon as I get out of the truck he does a quick 180 and barrels back over the ridge. All I see is his *ss and paddles that were completely flat way, way outside of his ears. A true giant. I was going after this bull.
There was about 6' of snow so was pretty easy to get on his tracks. I trailed him for 2-3 miles through all kinds of crap. Finally he comes out on a road. I call for backup, eat lunch and wait for two buddies. We spend the rest of the day tracking this pig.
Finally dark approaches and we have to call it a day. He was so big I wanted to pick it up again in the morning so first thing we all meet back up and start acting like hound dogs again. We spent all morning going through timber, clear cuts, etc. only to lose him back into the same clear cut I initially saw him. About a 5 mile loop through patches there is now way you could imagine a moose getting through. I was totally bummed and exhausted and not sure what to do for the remainder of the day.
I was going to wait until evening and see if he showed back up. But, Benhuntin called and he was out deer hunting and said he saw a decent bull pushing the 170' mark and close to 50'. He was two hours away but what the hell. I was tired and needed a change of pace. So, I went to meet up with him.

TEASE!

:yeah:

Worse than mini skirts in highschool
-
Ok Brad you held out long enough let these boys have it .... :chuckle:
-
I meet Ben and he shows me this little bowl and it's like a Moose Lodge. I think we see 10-12 bulls in a pretty small area and get glimpses of the bull he spotted. It was impossible to get a good look at him but it was definitely a potential shooter.
For no apparent reason he just jettisons on us and follows a finger down into the bottom. It's about 2pm so I decide I'm just going to walk down into the bottom where there was an old spur road that was completely full of moose tracks and sit there til dark in hopes of getting a better look at that bull. Ben tells me he's going back deer hunting and will come back at dark to see how things went.
Off he goes and I get all packed and layered up.
Not five minutes later while I'm just locking up the truck he comes screaming down the road. "Get in! get in!smoker bull up the road. It has 13-14 points on his left side." So, I jump in his rig and off we go.
Patience Boys! All good things come to those who wait. :tung:
-
:chuckle:
-
He's gotta get his money's worth fellas. He's lucky I can't post pics from my phone.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
-
We get up there and he's standing 30 yards off the road. All I see is points and some serious paddle width.....No time to check out this bull. He's a shooter.
As soon as I get out of the truck he's heading up hill and I can't get a clear shot. Ben and I run up the hill a bit to get a different angle because there were so many jack pines I couldn't see him. He's with another solid bull so I needed to make sure I shot the right one. Then, he pops out and Ben yells "don't shoot".....he and the other bull were inline with each other and it looked like one bull but couldn't tell which body was his.
We keep moving trying to get a better angle of him but he's behind a bunch of crap. Finally he stands broadside through a bunch of thick willows. I can see him but not a clear shot because it's so thick. I move a bit to my right and see a gap of about 1 foot to try and sneak a shot into. Ben wasn't sure it was a clean path but I thought I could squeeze it in there for a good kill shot and knew it was my only chance to get this bull.
Bam.....he disappears. Can't hear a thing. No noise.....nothing. All of a sudden we see the other bull standing right where he was..........
We wait 5 minutes and then start to move higher to get a better look. Finally, Ben sees a horn on the ground but it's all he can see. It's moving so he's not dead and the other bull is standing right over him.
We wait another 10 minutes or so and nothing changes. Finally, I decide to work my way up there slowly. Get to about 20 yards and the other bull finally bolts right toward us but we still can't see my bull.
Then at 10 yards we spot him......dead!
-
    WOW is all I can say!!  I can't wait to draw my tag next year :chuckle:

I'm not going down the score path. :bdid: I don't care where he fits into the books although it was scored as soon as I hit home from my moose fanatic friend. If some of you recognize him then maybe he'll make a slip of the tongue.
It was well beyond my initial goal of 170+ but more importantly I wanted a moose that made me go "oh crap" and he did.
-
 :brew:
-
The score absolutely does not matter... its only for curiousity... Im just curious how close he is to being the biggest killed in WA... Over 170!
HELL YEAH!!
-
well if its over 170 its at the very least #6 in the washington books. Ive never been one to care about score but curiosity would get the best of me on this one!

Boom.....what a bull. Even the moose fanatic was impressed from what I hear.

Congratulations to you Brad.... I know you held out as much as Coach did this season and to have you both close it on the same weekend was pretty fun.
-
Awesome bull, congratulation. Deffinately a gagger bull.

Awesome bull, one of the best moose ever taken in the state

Speechless
-
thank you for taking that freak out of our gene pool ! :chuckle:

Couple more......
My boss caught me drooling at this picture.
I told him that it was an edited picture of Bullwinkle's head on a rock. He then asked about the pool of slober in my lap, so I told him; Boss Remember I went to the dentist this morning...still numb (better than the option).
Congrats on a great hunt--and great results
-
wow congrats! I shot a great bull in 49 this year but nothing to compare. im still so jacked up at wa. moose I cant stand it.

First pic we took of me with the Bull.......Ben goes "this lighting sucks" and then grabs it by himself and drags it out into the sun. I was going to help but I just wanted to see if he could do it.

I'm glad it happened so fast, I didn't have time to think much about the shot. If I would have taken another one I'm not sure I could have hit him. I had the shakes after pulling the trigger.
-
I think I'd have shook a little on that one myself. I've seen a lot of moose, and that one would have had me puckering.
-
Still a Dink :tung:

Ben you do know how small all of them are ! If I need a tug of war team , you , your brother and whitpirate are gonna be on it I might even let RT in. That could be a interesting night at a bar.
-
:boxin: All right coach you have a point, a tug of war team we are not ... we may be smaller than you boys but were not that small! ;)
-
I'm out on the Sherpa thing and I don't drink. But you guys got it under control. Good luck on the tag.

What a great bull. I had a raffle tag in 08. Was looking for something with triple brows. Was holding out cause I new I could still draw a tag. Never saw one. Seen some daddy's with doubles. I feel pretty stoked looking at the pics of your bull. Congrats.

I wish you were there too. A pic of the 48" moose standing over the top of him when I walked up would have been epic.
But, I doubt Ben would have let you walk out of there alive.
-
Congrats on the bull of a lifetime. That is one of the best looking Shiras moose I have ever seen!
